against Freed-Hardeman, which eliminated CU from the tournament two days later. The quick start was the second in a row for Cumberland against Trevecca as the Bulldogs started the regular-season finale with 13 straight points five days earlier. Again CU cruised to victory, hold-ing a significant advantage throughout the 87-50 win. The first game wasn’t a blowout like the latter two with Cumberland taking a 76-75 deci-sion. The Bulldogs went 8-of-13 from the free throw line in the last six minutes and held off a furious Trojan comeback as TNU scored 25 of the last 35 points of the contest.

Reigning Co-Players of the Week square offThe current TranSouth Conference Co-Players of the Week will be going up against each other for the first time this week as Cumberland’s Brandon Springer and Trevecca’s Michael France battle today. Springer, a senior from Nashville, Tenn., earned the honor for the sec-ond time this season after recording back-to-back double-doubles last week. Against Lyon, the Hunters Lane HS product dropped 23 points and totaled a season-high 15 rebounds; and scored 29 versus Freed-Hardeman to go along with 11 boards. Springer, a preseason All-Amer-ican, also earned Co-Player of the Week honors for the week ending December 6. France aver-aged 21 points and seven rebounds in two out-ings last week.

Bulldogs bounce backAfter splitting its first two TranSouth Conference games of the year, Cumberland bounced back with a 90-72 win over Blue Mountain on Thurs-day night. The Bulldogs saw a season-best three players - Brandon Springer, Walter Simon and Lamar Brinkley - record double-doubles. The achievement is nothing new for any of the three players as they are the only current Bulldogs to ever have a double-double. Springer, the team’s leading scorer has 11 on the year, while Simon

and Brinkley each have two. It was the first time that all three have notched a double-double on the same night. Springer tied a career high with 15 rebounds, and Simon set a new personal best with 20 points.

Springer leads the nationSenior Brandon Springer, who has scored 29 points in each of his last two games, has be-come the nation’s leading scorer, averaging

23.1 points per outing. The Hunters Lane HS product has posted 11 double-doubles in 16 contests, including one in each of the last three games. Springer has at least 20 points in a doz-en games this season and has failed to score in double figures only once. The Nashville, Tenn., native has four 30-point outings, including a career-high 37 against West Virginia Tech, and

posted four straight double-doubles from No-vember 2-18, averaging 26.3 points and 11.3 rebounds per outing during the stretch. The Co-lumbia State CC transfer is also averaging 10.4 rebounds per game, ranking eighth in the NAIA. He is one of three players in the TSAC averag-ing a double-double and the only player in the league putting up 20-plus points per game.

New faces on the courtAfter transferring from Middle Tennessee State and missing the first half of the season, Lindal Yarbrough made his first appearance in a Bull-dog uniform Thursday night against Blue Moun-tain. The 6-foot-2 point guard from Nashville, Tenn., scored 11 points in his debut. The addi-tion of Yarbrough marks the second time since Cumberland began TranSouth Conference play that a player has made his initial appearance. Last week against Lyon College, Adam Barnett saw his first action. During his second contest, the Tullahoma HS product sank a trio of 3-point-ers in a loss to Freed-Hardeman.

Always the same front courtWith the addition of Lindal Yarbrough and Adam Barnett to the Cumberland active roster, head coach Lonnie Thompson has used two different starting lineups in the last three games and five this season. Brandon Springer and Walter Si-mon have been the only two Bulldogs that have started all 16 games this season. With Lamar Brinkley now coming off the bench, CU has gone to a three-guard look, rather than starting with three forwards.

No home cookingWith a win over Blue Mountain on Thursday, Cumberland upped its home record to 2-5 dur-ing the 2009-10 campaign after losing its first three. The losing record at home is the first time since the 2005-06 season that the Bulldogs have been below .500. A year ago, CU went 12-1 and won its first 10 at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center. Coming into this year, the Bulldogs had won 33 of their last 45 games in the Cedar City.

Chasing 1,000Brandon Springer, a second-year Bulldog, cur-rently has 791 points during his Cumberland ca-reer. The Hunters Lane HS product needs to put up 16 points per contest, seven points below his current average, to reach the 1,000-point pla-teau. If Springer reaches the milestone, he will become the fourth player to do so at Cumberland under head coach Lonnie Thompson. Thomas Douglas, a senior on the 2008-09 squad, gained entrance into the 1,000-point club last Novem-ber with 17 points against Fisk Univ.
