Album: Ghost stories by Coldplay

Page 3: 3 digipaks anaylsed

The artwork for Ghost Stories is an impressive etching by Czech-British artist Mila Fürstová. The artwork is a large-scale mosaic of different objects, scenes and ideas. The entire image is encased within a pair of angel wings, which is typical of Furstova's etchings; various scenes and scenarios encased within a larger object, usually inside a frame of some sort. One non-Ghost Stories example is her 2011 etching All Things Are Known to the Soul II.

The meaning behind the artwork, however, isn't easy to comprehend unless you understand the main ideas revolving around the album itself. Ghost Stories is a concept album that revolves around a broken relationship. The songs tell of a man's heartache and fight against depression after losing the love of his life in a sudden, dramatic way. The singer, however, breaks hold of his depression, learning that love doesn't last forever, and you always have to move on. There are other people in this world, and it isn't worth holding on to one that doesn't want to hold on to you.The artwork reflects the heartache of the singer, with images of the same man and woman repeating over constantly throughout the artwork. While most of the scenes depicted in the artwork would be otherwise seem rather odd, it creates a mood; like we're peering through a person's memories and feelings, especially of and towards a person he loved the most. The fact that all of this is encased within a pair of angel wings, and the presence of many birds throughout the artwork suggests that these memories and feelings are simply a photographic past. The birds and wings allude to the underlying message of the album; moving on and never letting go of love. Like "a flock of birds", love comes and goes. The man has moved on, and Ghost Stories is his memoir.

The back of the digipack

The back of the digi pack consistsOf 1. The name of the songs2.Other information 3.Brief Barcode

The art on the back of the albumPortray a night sky with stars Which helps the digipack relateTo the choice of alternate rock A lot better .as the whole themeFollows flow and suble soundtracks So the album art has been kept To have a very mystical feel to it

Page 5: 3 digipaks anaylsed

The inside of the digipack just consistsof a cd of the songs. Following the actual theme of the whole album it is also blue and consists of textings that highlists the Cds name and the name of the band. Formally introducing . Most alternative rock Music digipacks follow the same pattern and the same routine while establishing their digi paks .some can be categorised alike while others hold a lot of distinction

Radiohead -Rainbows

Page 7: 3 digipaks anaylsed

By the spring of 2007, Radiohead was done with In Rainbows – a lean 10-song set whose warm, pristine production showcased Yorke's thrilling melodies and the band's renewed bond. The album's release was fittingly unorthodox: Fans could buy it online at whatever price they chose. What began in turmoil ended in an act of rebellious reinvention. "It took a lot of time and energy to do this stuff justice, but we got there," Godrich says. "Between them, it was an opportunity to reconnect. Most people are not really friends with the people they went to school with by this point in their lives, you know? But they have a particular kind of chemistry. Like a family."

About the Cover

The cover of rainbows shows text saying rainbows in several different colours which covers the actual background of the digipak which is orginally showing the eruption of a volcano.

The album art follows the bands concept of using music as a mediam to become icons of bond between the the band and their family members and the colours are a vivid sign of

joy and bright idea of life which they are trying to portray through the album

Page 9: 3 digipaks anaylsed

Talking in terms of the colours the whole album front and back gives youA very bright and colorful impressionWhich is a norm in alternative rock music

The background of the album is blackAnd contains informations about the Sountrack and other relevant thingsWhich are very usual on most digipakAlbums

Overall these colours singify a sense of bonding and joy.The back cover is very simple in design as it doesnt follow on from the front cover andJust compromises of a black background making text more prominent in the whole didipak incudling the bands name and other relevant information

We can see that the text is a bold, clear sans serif font that is being displayed at the top of the album and dominates a majority of the album cover. We can see that this was done intentionally by the artist in order to catch their attention and instantly remind the audience of the band name and help to make it more memorable to the audience once they leave. The bold sans serif font could indicate that the album is predominately more male based than females and this is again another major convention in the rock, punk genre as it is a more male based audience.

We can see that the shade being used on the words 'Green Day' are a clear white against the black in order to create contrast and help those words stand out more to the audience. We can see that their is an evident red, white and black colour scheme on this album which is a definite convention of this genre and therefore meets the audience expectations and gains their attention. I feel that this colour scheme helps to give of connotations of danger and anger which links to the image being displayed of a bomb and a hand. The fact that this colour scheme tends to fit in with audience expectations means that this album can attract many traditionalists from the social value groups and makes it more desirable. The other value group this could attract is many self actualizers as the red can give of connotations of passion which is something that self actualizers tend to be very in touch with.

Page 12: 3 digipaks anaylsed

In terms of the image we can see an image that there is an image of a hand holding a hand shaped grenade giving of many political themes from the album which is something that could be extremely interesting to the people in their late teens in terms of the music they would listen to. The fact that the band are not present in the image gives of indications that they are very successful and well known and therefore do not need to be present at the front of the album. In terms of the image we can see that there is blood dripping from the grenade and this shows themes of violence and war which I feel was done intentionally by the band in order to attract more males as this is generally their field of interest and women may be more uncomfortable seeing an image that gives of these connotations. I also feel that the violent themes are present in order to attract many teens to the album as at this age more teens are attracted to these impending issues and therefore look for a form of escapism and knowledge in the music they listen to as opposed to the older generation who may be more mature and look for answers and political knowledge elsewhere.

n terms of the rough sketch of the spade we can see that this was conducted and placed on the digipak intentionally in order to appeal to the self actualizers on the group further than initially done with the names of the songs and the format of the text. This can be seen as intentionally created in a way to appeal to the audience and make them feel as though the album is all about the personal aspect of the artist and therefore the use of the hand drawn image and text makes it seem more personal and attractive to the audience.

The back of the cover

this type of genre it is important for it to seem more rough and chaotic due to the fact that this distinguishes it from being as clean cut and commercial as other genres such as Pop and Country are allowing the consumer to instantly realize what genre this belongs to and therefore are more able to decide whether or not they wish to purchase the album. The simplicity of background of this CD cover is an essential part of not only the genre but this artist's music in general in terms of the fact that it allows the consumer to understand that the music is the most important feature to the band and therefore is simply given the most attention through the largest section of the back cover

In terms of the bottom of the digipak we can see that this fits another convention of the genre in terms of the fact that there is a parental guidance placed at the bottom of the cover which is typically seen on mainly rock and hip hop genres and therefore allows the customer to realize the what genre this typically belongs to.
