1 ANZAC Service 10:00am

Dear Parents and Caregivers

On the first Wednesday of next term, 1 May, we will be conducting our annual Anzac Day Service at the College. This

service is now a very special part of our community outreach and again we hope it will be both moving and inclusive.

As a community connection, we are asking that families nominate members of their family, living or past, who have

served in any former or current conflict. As a part of the service we will acknowledge them individually and the

campaign they served in.

For those veterans still with us, we hope that they can attend in person and join us for a morning tea with their children,

grandchildren or even great grandchildren.

As such, if you would like to nominate a family member, please provide some brief details of the conflict and force

they served in by emailing the College on [email protected] along with any

RSVPs. Alternatively, details can be sent to the College Administration with your children.

Warm regards Rod Buckenara Principal

WE ARE FOCUSING ON ATTENDANCE When is it OK to not go to school? An OK reason is one that prevents your child from getting to school. This could include:

• when your child is sick or unwell • attending cultural or religious observances, such as sorry time and funerals • an unavoidable natural event such as flood waters or a cyclone • an unavoidable medical appointment

The principal decides if the reason given for your child’s absence is acceptable.

What can you do to help? • Act early. It is important to understand and work on the underlying reasons why your teenager is not going to

school.

• On average, teenagers need eight to nine hours sleep a night to be healthy and alert. Maintaining a daily routine helps. This may include monitoring internet, mobile phone and television use at night to ensure sleep is not disturbed.

• Try not to make appointments or take holidays during school time. This can make it difficult to catch up on missed school-work, and cause anxiety about attending school.

• Don’t let your teenager stay home unless they are genuinely sick.

AUSTRALIAN SURF LIFE SAVING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Last weekend, Year 10 Student Izaak competed with his under-15 beach sprint teammates from Quinns Mindarie SLSC in the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships on the Gold Coast. The Quinns Mindarie team participated against teams representing the country’s 313 other surf clubs, which featured some of Australia’s best beach sprinters in their age groups. The team’s dedication and regular training resulted in an outstanding achievement as they reached the finals and attained 6th place nationally! Congratulations boys, you should be very proud!

WEEKEND PERFORMANCES

Last Sunday, 14 of our past and present students performed at the Whitford Lions Football Club Fair, giving up a few hours of their own weekend to represent our school and showcase their talents. They showed the true meaning of RISE, role models for our College and made me very proud! This was Year 7 student, Asyura’s first ever public performance and they honestly were amazing!

This Sunday, 7 April, these same students and more will join me and represent our College by performing at the Joondalup Festival from 5:00 - 7:00pm. They are so excited and have spent a long while practicing. Please come down and say hello, if you are free. I believe we are playing on Boas Avenue in the ‘Space Walk Market Area’ – Central Walk. Miss La Cava

BUDDING BARISTAS

Year 10 Cafe Cuisine students were very enthusiastic and had a busy day on Monday learning the art of coffee making. After catching the train into the city and a short stroll to the Coffee School, each student had their own coffee machine to develop their barista skills. Students were required to determine the perfect grind, realising if the grind is too coarse or too fine, the coffee would be undesirable. They learnt the importance of tampering, how to get an accurate 'shot', how to create the perfect temperature and foaming techniques when frothing milk. All in all, the students discovered there are a lot of variables when making 'a great coffee' and it takes skill and expertise to become a master barista.

Needless to say all students were able to demonstrate beautiful creamy lattes, flat whites, cappuccinos and the perfect long/short black with a great crema. Students finished the day with a quick stop at McDonalds, then caught the train back to school. Thanks to Mr Alexander for assisting and bringing his coffee experience (from back in the day) when he worked as a barista at Dome Cafe. Well Done Students! Mrs O'Hayon

CREATIVE COOKING

Year 10 Creative Cooking students learnt the skill of preserving food items and then created wonderful dishes using their preserved ingredients. So many talented students! Ms McLean

TAMALA PARK WASTE MANAGEMENT WARRIORS

Year 7 KEA HASS students visited Tamala Park this week as a link to our studies on water management and more

recently, liveability in our suburbs. It was a real eye opener (and nose..peeeew) to see what happens to all our waste

and how we can help the system run a little smoother. It was also wonderful to be able to discuss how we may

implement this knowledge both on an individual level and at a school level. Students are now full bottles on the new

3 bin systems in our homes too! I would like to thank our parent volunteers who came along to assist with

supervision. We couldn’t have done it without you. Ms Crompton

Diabetes Diabetes is one of the major epidemics of the 21st century and the biggest challenge confronting Australia’s health system. Many members of our school community will know at least one person who has diabetes or is affected by diabetes. FACT - 280 Australians develop diabetes every day. That’s one person every five minutes. FACT - Around 1.7 million Australians have diabetes. WHAT IS DIABETES? Diabetes is a serious complex condition which can affect the entire body. When someone has diabetes, their body can’t maintain healthy levels of glucose in the blood. Glucose is a form of sugar which is the main source of energy for our bodies. Unhealthy levels of glucose in the blood can lead to long term and short term health complications.

there are three main types of diabetes: type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes All types of diabetes are complex and require daily care and management Diabetes does not discriminate, anyone can develop diabetes

Diabetes can be managed well but the potential complications are the same for type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Early diagnosis, optimal treatment and effective ongoing support and management reduce the risk of diabetes-related complications. For further information see: https://www.diabetesaustralia.com.au/
