Energy is at the heart ofAberdeen’s vibrant anddynamic economy. Every twoyears the city plays host toSPE Offshore Europe, one ofthe world’s most high-profileinternational energy events inthe industry’s calendar.

2013 marks the 40th anniversary ofSPE Offshore Europe in Aberdeenand this September to complementthe conference and exhibitionprogramme, residents of and visitorsto Aberdeen can experience theOE13 Energy Festival, a fantasticline-up of live events, music andentertainment showcasing the bestproduce and talent from AberdeenCity and Shire.

From Tuesday 3 September, the focusshifts to Aberdeen city centre wherethe Quad at Marischal College willoffer a unique venue for a programmeof outdoor entertainment includingJazz, international performers andtraditional Scottish music. Visitors canwonder at the surroundings of theworld’s second largest granitebuilding while listening to excitingperformances from a wide range ofgenres.

Aberdeen’s Country Fair will for thefirst time, be held during the eveningin Belmont Street. With crafts ondisplay to purchase, tasting sessionswith local producers and streettheatre that will make you smile, thisvibrant street market is sure toprovide a real flavour of the region in

a safe and relaxed environment.

Finally, the city will celebrate itsrelationship with the oil and gasindustry in a photographic exhibitionat Seventeen, Aberdeen’s culturalhub in Belmont Street by charting theimpact of the industry on Aberdeen’sgrowth and development over the lastforty years. With work from Aberdeenbased artist Callum Kellie on displayand Aberdeen Journals providingimages from their huge archive, thisexhibition will provide a fascinatinginsight into the changing face ofAberdeen.

Organised by SPE Offshore Europe inconjunction with Aberdeen CityCouncil and sponsored by BP, Shell,Taqa Bratani and the Balmoral Group,this festival provides a uniqueopportunity to celebrate the energyindustry as a driving force inAberdeen and to share the excitementof SPE Offshore Europe with the localcommunity and visitors to the city.

Back on the Beach -Callum Kellie‘Back on the Beach’ is a collection ofartworks relating to the offshoreenergy industry, focusing on thehuman element and the veryparticular circumstances it placespeople and families under.

Many of the works have not beenshown together, however all of thework is the product of Callum’spersonal experiences as a childgrowing up in an offshore family andworking offshore whilst undertakingstudies at Gray’s School of Art. Muchof the work was made whilst onplatforms across the North Sea so hisfirst hand experiences are pivotal inthe creation of this body of work.

Featuring photography, movingimage and multimedia works this

show is of a body of work producedover a number of years.

Callum Kellie is an Aberdeen basedartist working in digital media andphotography who has exhibitednationally. Much of his body of work hasused the offshore oil industry as a stageto explore themes of family priorities,distances, work and how they don’talways reconcile with each other.

Visit Aberdeen’s cultural hub Seventeen and celebrate the city’s forty yearrelationship with the oil and gas industry, featuring work from local artist CallumKellie and a selection of images from the archives of Aberdeen Journals.

Featuring a selection of full and half broadsheet front pages from through theyears, Aberdeen Journals has always focussed on bringing the headlinesfrom the oil and gas industry to its readership. This exhibition will bringtogether print and images that encompass the many key issues faced by theoil and gas industry, including the social and economic impact of thissector on the development of Scotland and images of the thrivingenergy industry in action from fields including the Brent, Forties,Ninian and Argyll.

Works on Display NORTH: Father & SonMulti Channel Video WorkA duet of complimentary video workstitled NORTH: Father & NORTH: Son.The films are of two people a fatherand a son telling the same story, thebirth of a daughter and a sister atChristmas. The Father who wasworking offshore at the time of the birthand the son who spent the period ofthe birth in someone else’s home.

NORTH: PhotographsColour Ilfochrome PhotographsNORTH: uses the offshore oil industryas a stage to explore themes of familypriorities, distances, work and howthey don't always reconcile with eachother. The body of work features aseries of 8 Ilfochrome prints of offshoreoil platforms and their environsjuxtaposed with images of places localto where the artist grew up.

PlatformsColour Digital PhotographsPlatforms is a suite of photographsconcerning the relationship betweenthe world of offshore oilrigs and thehomes of its workers and theirfamilies.

Window PieceVinyl with video projectionThe window piece is a multimediawork involving cut vinyl and digitalvideo projection. It will involveimagery evocative of north sea oilplatforms and forms of renewableenergy such as wind turbines mixedwith elements hinting at past industrysuch as agriculture and fishing.

The International Night brings togethersome of the finest young musicians fromacross Europe, performing a variety ofdifferent music and dance genres.

Vocal ensemble 'Prasnitsa' fromAberdeen's twin city of Gomel, Belaruswill perform folk songs, Belarusian

Focussed on tradition, SC&T want tobring enjoyment and appreciation ofScottish cultural heritage to a wideraudience. Through classes, workshopsand social events, active participationin traditional music is encouraged byboth their tutors and students.

Scottish night features the BlydeLasses a Shetland-flavoured,Aberdeen-based, worldwide-travelling fiddle, concertina, andvocals duo. Having played togethersince 2007, Claire White and FrancesWilkins have toured in the UnitedKingdom, the United Arab Emirates,and New Zealand. Claire and Francesreleased Blyde Lasses’ debutalbum in 2013.

Also performing on theprogramme is KennyHadden one of thepioneers in

re-introducing the wooden "simple-system" into traditional Scottish music.Featuring on recordings by DougieMacLean, and Sheena Wellington,among others he was one of theoriginal tutors with the "SC&T" groupin Aberdeen, and has been teachingthe flute and advanced whistleclasses with that organisation since itbegan 16 years ago.

There will also be music from DavidAnderson and his band, PaulAnderson on the fiddle and traditionaland contemporary songs on clarsach,guitar, whistle and fiddle by AlisonHester (voice and whistle), Karen Ward(voice, clarsach, celtic harp and

whistle) and RichardWard (voice and

guitar).
