: Serial cables can fail. If you suspect your serial cable maybe the problem, try connecting to a second logger. If you can connect, the problem is probably the first logger. If you can’t connect to the sec-ond logger either, the problem may be your cable. Try using a spareD

to a logger. The serial adapter for your PDA could be the problem.

You can
increase the
effective transm

bym
aximizing the height above ground of the radio antenna.
This helps ensure a clear path for the radio signals andreduce the am
ount of signal absorbed by the earth. Use an
antenna extension cable to help you position your antennaw
hen it isn’t practical to install your logger higher off theground. If you m
ount your radio logger to a metal pole,
you should mount your antenna to the top of the m
etalpole so it is free to radiate the signal above the pole.
Replacing the stock antenna on your radio device with a
high-gain antenna can greatly increase the radio range.Consider using a directional Yagi antenna or a high-gainom
ni-directional antenna when you w
ant to extend therange of your radio network. A
high-gain antenna can alsohelp overcom
e the effects of unavoidable environmental
obstructions.
The ECH

etry system also supports a sim
ple relayfor use w
ith Transmit M
ode networks. Combining a relay
and high-gain antennas allows radio devices to com
mu-
nicate over very long distances. Contact Decagon for
more inform

Transmit Best Practices
Transmit m
odes are most useful w
hen you have three orm
ore loggers installed within radio range of each other.
There is no hard limit to the num
ber of radio loggersbroadcasting to a D
ataStation. Use this m
ode for as few as
one logger and as many as 50 or m
ore loggers. You shoulduse the Telem
etry Test feature of ECH
2 O U
tility Mobile
to test the connection from your logger to the D
ataSta-tion.
NO
TE
: Em50R loggers must have firmware version 1.12 or later
to enable the Confirmed Delivery Transmit mode and Telemetry Test
feature. Your DataStation must have firmware version 1.09 or later
to receive Confirmed Delivery Transmit mode data packets. Contact
Decagon for an application note that covers the steps needed to
upgrade your hardware.
See Chapter 7, “DataStation N
etworks” for step by stepinstructions for configuring your D
ataStation and remote
radio loggers.

Settings
For two radio devices to comm
unicate they must share the
same radio settings. A
n Rm1 radio m
odem can only con-
nect to a remote radio logger w
ith the same radio settings.
A D
ataStation will only receive data from
loggers with the
same radio settings as the D
ataStation. Set the RadioChannel to the sam
e value for all the devices on the same
network. Set the Radio Sub Channel to the same value for
all the devices on the same network.

Telemetry
This chapter gives you a brief overview of the radio telem
-etry available in the E
CH2 O
system. This inform
ationonly applies to E
m50R. The E
CH2 O
system supports two
types of radio telemetry: “Two-w
ay” modes and “Trans-
mit” m
odes. Consider one or both types of radio modes
when designing your E
CH2 O
telemetry system
.
ECH

etry networks require each remote radio
logger to have a unique name. E
ach logger leaves thefactory w
ith the name set to the logger’s unique serial
number. You can easily change the nam

Telemetry
The Transmit Radio m
odes help you create a simple
network of remote radio loggers all transm
itting data to aD
ataStation radio base station. The DataStation stores
data from all the rem
ote loggers in one convenient place.Typically a D
ataStation is connected to your computer
where you can easily dow
nload the data for use in ECH
2 OD
ataTrac. Unlike the Two-w
ay Radio modes, you can't
remotely change logger settings w
hen using this mode.
When a logger is in Transm
it mode, it only turns on the
radio when it has new
data to broadcast. For example,
when you set the m
easurement interval in your logger to
60 minutes, the logger stores your data every hour and
then broadcasts the data to a listening DataStation. The
actual transmit tim
e is randomly delayed for several
minutes to prevent two or m
ore radio loggers frominterfering w
ith each other.
The Transmit radio m
odes use less battery power because
the radio is off most of the tim
e. The Em
50 is designed towork for m
any months in Transm
it mode.
NO
TE
: A D
ataStation is a receiver. It doesn’t cause the remotelogger to send data. If your D
ataStation is powered off for some time,it won’t receive data sent by the remote loggers. The missing data isstill stored in the logger; however, the D
ataStation has no way toretrieve the missing data. You can directly connect to the logger todownload the missing data.

Two-way radio modes with the wake interval set to 1 or 2 will cause thebatteries of your logger to drain very rapidly.
Two-w

ay modes are m
ost useful when you have a sm
allnum
er (one, two, or three) of remote radio loggers you
wish to contact. If you have three or m
ore loggersinstalled w
ithin radio range of each other, consider usingone of the Transm
it modes. The Two-w
ay modes also
allow you to m
ount an Rm1 in your vehicle and interact
with the rem
ote logger while in radio range.
See Chapter 6, “Connecting via a Radio Modem
” for stepby step instructions for establishing a two-w
ay connectionw
ith a remote radio logger.
