Michigan’s New Teacher Requirements

Who is the “new” or “novice” or “beginning” teacher?- Defined as a teacher in his/her first 3 years of teaching

What is the purpose of Michigan’s Legislation - Section 1526?- Provide support for new teachers in their first 3 years of teaching- Transition from the “study” of teaching to the classroom of what was learned- Commonly referred to as teacher “induction”

What is required during induction of new teachers?- Structured 15 days of professional development/learning during their first 3 years of

teaching No policy on how these days are distributed by the state – seek guidance from

your district

- That you have a mentor

New Teacher Requirements, cont.

Are these days in addition to any other district requirements?– New teacher professional development requirements (Section 1526) are in addition to the requirements

for all teachers in your district/building (Section 1527 – for new and experienced teachers)

What can count toward my professional development/learning as a new teacher?– A variety of activities can count toward professional development. Check the Guidelines for

Professional Learning handout in your notebook (Sections 1526 & 1527 are identified – GREEN handout)

How is a day defined? – A “day” is determined based on your teacher contract language – what your contract states constitutes a

day is what you can count. (District A may have a contractual day of 6.5 hrs. while District B’s contractual day may be 7.5 hrs.)

How do I keep track or document what I do to meet these requirements?– Use the log sheet or a documentation form provided by your district. (If necessary, you may use the log

sheet sample provided in your new teacher notebook which is from the Michigan Department of Education – see WHITE handout labeled Beginning Teachers ANNUAL RECORD OF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT.)

– Discuss with your administration their expectations, if you haven’t already!– At the conclusion of the New Teacher Academy, a certificate will be sent to you with documentation of

your hours.

Here’s the next step….

In your notebook you also have information pertaining to the reading requirements for a 3-semester hour course in diagnosis and remediation of reading disabilities and differentiated instruction. Review the YELLOW handout, Implementation of Public Acts 118 (2006) and 32 (2007).

In the Berrien RESA NTA Ning website, post the following in the discussion forum.

• Whether you met these Reading requirements in your under-graduate work as identified. If yes, please discuss (briefly) the course content and requirements.

+ If not, please indicate what information was shared with you by your college/university about this requirement.

• Post your question(s) about any of the new teacher state requirements. If none, please indicate you have no questions, at

least for now!
