CONTENT OF PAPER WRITING
COVER
Cover should contain product’s name and logo, team name, team members, and university.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Executive summary should contain a summary or brief description of the proposed chemical
product design.
LIST OF CONTENTS, FIGURE, & TABLE
CHAPTER I : INTRODUCTION
Background
Background explains the purpose of designing the product in paragraphs. Problem identification
explains in points about the urgency of the product or why a product needs to be made. Problem
boundaries explain the extent of making the product in points.
Needs Identification
In this chapter, state the needs identification and ideas selection based on chemical product design
principle on the background part. The needs identification and idea selection include these
following.
List of Needs
In this part, the needs of the customers are defined by asking the potential customer what theyrequire. The market analysis can be done directly by giving interviews or polling, and/or indirectly
by doing research from the media on market’s level of interest on certain product. The needs
recorded from interviews is organized and edited into a cogent list. The needs are then ranked as
essential, desirable, useful, and so on according to the result of the interviews.
Benchmarking
The qualitative list of needs is converted into list of specifications, including as much quantitative
and chemical detail as possible. The specifications should be realistic and thus require engineering
knowledge to examine the practicality of the product specifications. Benchmark is an existing or
idealized product against which we can measure our new design. This part contains comparison
between specification of existing products and the proposed product design, in order to find out
whether the proposed product is worth developing. This part must answer the following questions:
What is the main function of the existing product?
What kind of innovation that will be accepted or not accepted by costumer?
Will the new commercialization method be applicable if the characteristic of product is
changed? What are the patents that protect the existing product or the new product?

Concept Selection
Once the specifications of the target product are determined, one concept should be selected to be
further manufactured. Concepts are being selected by eliminating concepts that are inconsistent
with the product’s objectives or rather impossible to be realized. The most common method is by
considering some factors, such as scientific maturity, ease of engineering, ease of usage, cost, etc.
Usually one until three concepts will be chosen and have further evaluation. One best concept
acquired from the evaluation should be explained in this part.
CHAPTER II : REVIEW OF LITERATURE
This part contains basic theories that supports the design of chemical products that are chosen by
the participants. One of the most important element in Chapter II is explanation of local resources
used and how far the resources have been used and applied by communities.
CHAPTER III : PROTOTYPE
Product Description
This part contains detailed explanation of chemical product design, such as the characteristic and
specification (ingredients) of the product, in order to give a clear and detail image of the product.
It also includes explanation of product positioning which shows the added value of the product
compare to competitors.
Product’s Brand, Logo, and Motto
This part shows the brand, logo, and motto of the product, as well as brief explanation regarding
them.
Product’s Blueprint
This part shows the elaboration of the ready-model, packaging, dimensional sketch and design
calculation of the product.
CHAPTER IV : PRODUCT MANUFACTURING AND SUPPLY CHAIN
Production Capacity
This part explains the market segmentation of the product and production capacity in accordance
with the level of demand.
Manufacturing Process
This part shows the suggested manufacture method of the product to ensure that all product
specifications are fulfilled. This part consists of process flow diagram of the manufacturing
process including the detailed explanation, and description of equipment profile used for
manufacturing process.

Mass and Energy Balance
This part consists of mass and energy balance calculation of the manufacturing process, in order
to determine the process efficiency.
Plant Location and Layout
This part explains consideration of choosing a location for the plant, as well as its layout.
Raw Materials Supply
This part consists of supplier options of raw materials used.
Product Distribution
This part explains the distribution system of the product and the distribution locations.
CHAPTER V : PRODUCT ECONOMICS
This part explains the economic analysis of the product, including the capital cost and estimated
selling price as below:
Capital Expenditure
This part includes costs for equipment, installation, plant building, plant site, and licensing, etc.
Operational Expenditure
This part includes costs for raw materials, utilities, maintenance, labors, patent, distribution,
marketing, insurance, etc.
Economic Analysis
This part includes product pricing, cash flow, and cost breakdown.
Profitability Analysis
This part includes calculation of internal rate of return (IRR), payback period, break-even point
(BEP), net present value (NPV), and sensitivity analysis.
CHAPTER VI : CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTIONS
This part consists of conclusions and suggestions of the entire product design paper
