Although the role of the mine site laboratory has not radically changed over the past 30 years or so it does face significantly more challenges today than it say in the late 1980’s. The laboratory of today is faced with budget constraints, an increased focus on quality control, skills shortages, infra-structure challenges and commercialisation. There has also been a focus of late in some industries, particularly the gold and platinum industries, whereby the mine assay laboratories have been closed down and mine samples are sent to a centralised Facility for assaying. This facility in some operations is run by a

commercial laboratory company that may in fact assay samples from several mining companies. This is obviously expedient for the mining company as it no longer has to worry about the staffing and operational cost of a laboratory but in my opinion it does do away with what i call the personal touch.in the iron ore industry we are seeing the advent of automated or robotic laboratories whereby the sheer weight and volume of sample has required the use of robots to process samples. in this environment the position of analyst has been superseded by technicians whose role is to maintain and keep the robots operating.
