Usually chosen when:
Lot size are larger and house are spaced widely.
Small and may serve individual house or small housing developments or isolated commercial establishments.
Requires:
Septic tank, a distribution box and an absorption field.
Septic tank & absorption field are a unit, neither part will function as intended without the other.

Septic Tank
To remove large particles and grease (avoid clog on tile field).
Heavy solids settle, undergo biological decomposition.
Grease floats to the surface and is trapped.

On-Site Disposal System
Clarified effluent then flows (or is pumped via a pump well) to the absorption trench or bed for treatment and disposal through distribution pipes, and then filtered through the gravel and sand to the underlying soil.
Bacteria produce a slime layer at the bottom of the trench (called clogging mat).
A clogging layer or biomat develops along the bottom and sides of the trench and acts as a further filter.

On-Site Disposal System
This filtering process helps remove pathogens, toxins and other pollutants. Nutrients in the effluent are taken up by vegetation (normally grass) planted across the absorption trench area.
Creates a barrier, slows the movement of water into the surrounding soil, keep unsaturated, permit air to move through soil, maintain aerobic condition for proper effluent treatment.
Normal lifetime 20-30 years, soil becomes clogged with organic matter.

On-Site Disposal System
Roots can block pipes, crushed by vehicle, hydraulically overloaded, toxic substance of soil bacteria disposed.
Common reason: improper maintenance. Solids in the tank accumulate over time, clear water zone becomes small, carry over of solids to absorption field. To avoid, the solids (sludge) in septic tank should periodically removed .

Municipal Wastewater Treatment
1) Pretreatment Provide protection to wastewater
treatment plant equipment
2) Primary Treatment Remove pollutant that settle or float
(60% SS, 35% BOD5)
3) Secondary Treatment Speedup the breakdown of the
degradable organic pollutants (85% BOD5)
4) Tertiary treatment Chemical and filtration (95 %BOD5,
phosphorous, suspended solids and bacteria, 95% nitrogen)
