Complete the LAST page of your Time Capsule! When you are done store your complete capsule away somewhere
safe- you can hide it in the ground, seal it in an envelope and store it somewhere. Come back and look at your time
capsule in 5 years! See how life has changed!
Science: Ms. Harland is going to lead you in a science experiment on Monday! The next couple days you will get to get
hands-on as you explore water pressure!
Exploring Water Pressure: Take a look at the bottle below, what do you think the arrows in
the bottle below are trying to tell you? Well the more or greater pressure on water, the
faster it will exit a hole. Look at the bottle below again, do see how the arrows are trying to
explain that?
A Moo-ving Experiment Make it Rain
Empty milk carton or bottle quart or gallon Empty round container (sour cream?)
Push pin, thumb tack, or sharp nail Push pin, thumb tack, or sharp nail
Masking Tape Bowl to submerse container in
Plastic container Ball Point Pen
Name: ________________SCIENCE EIGHT – Understanding Water Pressure
A Moo-ving Experiment Question: Which of the three holes punched in the side of the bottle
or carton and then filled with water, do you think will produce the longest stream of water:
the bottom, middle, or top hole?
A. the bottom hole B. the middle hole C. the top hole
Directions: Poke three holes in your container one in the top, middle, and bottom. The holes
should all be the same size, and aligned one above the other, and evenly spaced. Next, have
students use one long piece of tape to seal the holes. Then cill the container with water. Then
place the container in large plastic container. Then remove the tape all at once. Write your
conclusion (what did you learn)

Make it Rain Question: What will happen when a container poked with holes in its bottom,
filled with water, and sealed shut, is lifted out of a bowl of water? The container will?
__________
A. the container will not leak water B. the container will fall apart C. the container will leak
water like rain
Directions: Poke 20 tiny holes into the bottom of an empty container. Then turn the container
right side up and immerse it in the bowl of water. The water must be over the top of the
container. When it is filled push the lid on the container. Then remove the container from the
bowl of water.
Why doesn’t the container leak? Think about what you have learned. What is needed?
Now take a ballpoint pen and poke a hole in the top of the container. Immediately what
happens? Write your conclusion (what did you learn)
