IP over BSS

Following interfaces can be realised over IP transmission:

Abis over IP: Abis over IP supports two transmission modes: IP over FE/GE and IP over E1/T1/Ch-STM-1. The IP protocol version adopted is IPv4. A over IP: A over IP supports two transmission modes: IP over FE/GE and IP over E1/T1/Ch-STM-1. The IP protocol version adopted is IPv4. In this scenario BSC must be connected to Huawei MGW only. Gb over IP: Gb over IP supports only IP over FE/GE and does not support IP over E1/T1/Ch-STM-1. The IP protocol version adopted is IPv4. Ater over IP (BSC6900 only): Ater over IP supports IP over PPP over E1/T1/Ch-STM-1 and does not support IP over FE/GE. The IP protocol version adopted is IPv4. Currently (GBSS: V9R011), the Huawei Ater interface supports IP over Ch-STM-1 and does not support IP over E1/T1.

IP related features: IP BSS (refers to the IP interfaces mentioned above) IP Clock (clock synchronisation over IP network; Server(IPCLK1000)-Client(NEs) configuration) Frame Protocol Multiplexing (encapsulates multiple FP PDUs into one FP-Mux packet, thus reducing the UDP/IP/L2/L1 header transmission overhead and resulting in improved transmission efficiency) Abis-Mux and Ater-Mux (Abis-Mux and Ater-Mux are applicable only to the user plane of the Abis and Ater interfaces that are based on IP transmission) UDP Multiplexing (enables multiple RTP packets to be multiplexed in one UDP packet, thus reducing the overhead of the UDP/IP/L2/L1 header and increasing the transmission efficiency) Header Compression (used to reduce the frame header overhead on PPP links and to improve bandwidth efficiency)

GPRS/EDGE in BSS

Huawei BSCs (BSC6000, BSC6900) are ready to support GPRS/EDGE. No hardware or software upgrade is required.

3900 series of base stations have embedded GPRS/EDGE support.

PCU addition is necessary in order to provide packet service in GSM network. Two PCU types currently exist:

- External PCU (PCU6000): The external PCU is an independent network element that provides PS service processing functions. Pb interface needs to be configured in this case. External PCU is not supported in case of Abis over IP. External PCU is recommended for upgrade scenarios on older BSC versions (e.g. BSC32)

- Internal (Built-in) PCU: PCU functionality is provided by specific boards (see slides 4, 5 or 8) which are installed in the BM subracks. Pb interface need not be configured in this case. It is recommended that built-in PCU be

configured in GBSS9.0 and later versions (for both BSC6000 and BSC6900).

Flex Abis is recommended (although not necessary) to be employed for maximazing resource utilization efficiency: Flex Abis is a mode of allocating the Abis interface transmission resources. That is, the Abis interface transmission resources form a resource pool that is shared by the CS service and PS service (including idle timeslots) among different cells and BTSs.

3900 Series BTS auxiliary cabinets

RFC: it houses the RFUs and provides functions such as power distribution and surge protection.

APM30H: provides -48 V DC power and backup power to the outdoor macro BTS and also provides installation space for the BBU3900 and other devices.

IBBS200D/IBBS200T: it houses batteries for long-time power backup.

TMC11H: provides additional transmission space. The BBU3900 can also be installed in the TMC11H.

Basic RF specs

Power output: measured at the Top Of Cabinet (TOC). See slides 25, 26 for details for each BTS.

Non-combined: no combiner is used Combined: internal combiner used to combine signals from 2 TRXs PBT (Power Booster Technology): The PBT is a power boost technology. In PBT mode, the two

TRXs in the double-transceiver unit are used as one TRX. After modulation and DA conversion, one signal output is divided into two RF signals. These two signals are amplified and then combined to form one signal. As the two signals are aligned in phase, the transmit power is amplified and the downlink signal strength is increased. In PBT mode, 1 DRRU or DRFU supports 1 TRX.

Power sharing: When the BTS downlink power control is enabled, the total output power of carriers in a cell is always equal to or less than “Maximum Output Power of Carrier × Number of Carriers”. Based on the estimated power that calls need, if the calls with different power are grouped into different timeslots according to a certain rule, the probability that the total output power of carriers in the cell is less than “Maximum Output Power of Carrier × Number of Carriers” is further increased. Or even, the total output power of carriers in the cell is far less than “Maximum Output Power of Carrier × Number of Carriers”. Hence, each carrier can carry more power than standard configuration.

Rx Sensitivity: values provided are typical values, measured at the BTS antenna connector. See slides 25, 26 for details for each BTS.
