Printed Circuit Board Design & Manufacture

2D PCB is effectively two programs in one package.

Firstly, a very simple to use PCB design package, developedspecifically for the needs of education and secondly, a PCBmanufacturing system. The system allows the use of a STIKA,CAMM 1, or ColorCAMM to cut out the tracks in sticky backedcopper foil, or the use of a RotoCAMM, EGX-350E, MODELA, orCAMM 2, etc., to engrave around the tracks, drill the holes and cutout the board, for a completely finished PCB.

PCB Design2D PCB provides a convenient and professional method ofdesigning printed circuit boards and drawing schematics.Although a very comprehensive system, the most importantdesign consideration for our software writers, has been to make iteasy to use and accessible to students. It is ideal for both simplesingle-sided PCBs, and complex double-sided boards. A libraryfacility allows standard component libraries (supplied) to be used.Alternatively, user defined components, or even whole circuits,may be saved as library items. Thus it is possible to create smallsystem boards which may easily be loaded and joined togetherto form complete circuits. A large selection of pre-drawn Alphacircuit modules is included.Links with 2D Design mean that design drawings may be used astemplates, allowing accurate positioning of components on theboard. Alternatively, 2D PCB drawings may be transferred to 2DDesign to use in designing the enclosure, fascia, packaging and publicity material. For maximum flexibility of use, 2D PCB will import data from other PCBpackages.

PCB ManufactureConventional school PCB manufacture has beenfraught with problems. Now TechSoft havedevised clean, quick and simple solutions usingmanufacturing machines already widelyavailable and proven in schools.

The software allows two basic manufacturing strategies, engraving onto conventionalPCB board using a RotoCAMM, EGX-350E, MODELA, etc., or cutting a circuit fromsticky backed copper foil using a STIKA, CAMM 1, etc.

Engraving PCBsA piece of PCB board is placed on the machine bed, and the Make PCB option isselected. The machine will then automatically engrave the tracks, drill the holes,and cut out the board. This is a quick, clean and reliable process (eg., a typicalsimple 555 based circuit should take no more than a couple of minutes to completeon a RotoCAMM). Virtually any circuit design can be manufactured with thisprocess. It is even possible to put tracks between DIL pads!

Copper Foil PCBsThis process, developed by TechSoft, uses aself-adhesive copper foil (Cutronics). This fitsinto any Roland vinyl cutter (other thanSCP-85), and cuts just like vinyl. Whenweeded, the circuit can be applied to anysuitable substrate such as plastic sheet, woodor card. (If card is used it is possible to makebendy, even roll up circuits). This process isideally suited to simple circuits with largerpads and tracks, a marvellous introduction toPCB manufacture.

Software Information

Site LicenceA Site Licence allows a school/college to install the software onany number of computers on the school site.

Student LicenceA Student Licence allows a school/college to distribute a specialnon-output version of the software to students and teachers forhome use.Students will be able to save work for output back at school.Schools may choose to charge a nominal amount (eg., 5) perstudent, to recoup the cost. (Only available to site licenceholders.)
