IDA Career Achievement Award

Alex Gibney

Multi-award winning filmmaker Alex Gibney’s impressive and vast

filmography includes over 25 directorial credits since the early 1980s,

including Best Documentary Feature Oscar® winner Taxi to the Dark Side

(2008), which also received a Best Director nomination from the Directors

Guild of America. Two others from the filmmaker, Enron: The Smartest

Guys in the Room (2006) and No End In Sight (2007), also received

Academy Award® nominations, and Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the

House of God (2012) won three Primetime Emmy Awards.

A doc-maker always interested in tracking and exposing the path of

corruption in a timely and immediate fashion, Gibney’s films mostly seek

to root out and follow maligned, high-profile public figures. Titles such as

Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer (2011), Casino Jack and the

United States of Money (2010), and Park Avenue: Money, Power and the

American Dream (2012) all confront head-on the notion that “absolute

power corrupts absolutely,” a theme to which Gibney seems to be

attracted time and time again.

Gibney’s education began at Yale, followed by hands-on experience at the

UCLA Film School. Gibney is currently the President and founder of Jigsaw

Productions, an East Coast production company that works tirelessly to

support various nonfiction endeavors. Outside of his filmmaking projects,

he also contributes regularly to The Atlantic and Huffington Post. His most

recent projects include The Armstrong Lie, an exposition of the myth and

reality of Lance Armstrong, and We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks,

a profile of the controversial media figure Julian Assange.

The IDA’s Career Achievement Award recognizes a filmmaker who has made a majorimpact on the documentary genre through a long and distinguished body of work.

Geralyn White Dreyfous

Geralyn Dreyfous has a long, distinguished career in both philanthropy and

documentary producing. A graduate of Harvard College, she co-founded,

in 1989, the Boston-based Philanthropic Initiative, a consulting business for

people of wealth and corporations interested in strategic advice and staffing

for their philanthropy.

Dreyfous returned to Harvard in 1992 to teach documentary and narrative

writing with Dr. Robert Coles, and together they established the Center for

Community Service and Documentary Studies—the precursor to the

Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University, which birthed what is

now the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival.

After moving to Utah in 1995, she founded the Utah Film Center, a Salt Lake

City-based nonprofit that brings the world of film to local audiences through

free community screenings and discussions, outreach programs and visiting

artists and professionals. She also ventured in documentary producing,

starting with The Day My God Died in 2003, and continuing with the Academy

Award®-winning Born Into Brothels; and multiple film festival award-winners

such as Kick Like a Girl, In A Dream, Dhamma Brothers, Project Kashmir,

Miss Representation, Connected and The Invisible War.

In 2007, she and Dan Cogan launched Impact Partners, a donor advisory

service for high net worth individuals interested in investing in social impact

media. Among the many acclaimed documentaries that Dreyfous has helped

make possible through Impact Partners include Connected, The Cove, The

Invisible War, Freeheld, Detropia, The Island President, The Crash Reel,

American Promise and The Square.

IDA Courage Under Fire Award

Laura Poitras

Laura Poitras is an American documentary film director, producer, and

journalist. Along with Glenn Greenwald, Poitras broke the story of NSA

whistleblower Edward Snowden, revealing the PRISM program.

Poitras is working on a trilogy of films about America post 9/11. The first film,

My Country, My Country (2006), was nominated for an Academy Award®,

Independent Spirit Award and Emmy Award. The second film, The Oath

(2010), received a Gotham Award for Best Documentary, the Sundance Film

Festival Award for Excellence in Cinematography for Documentaries and the

award for Outstanding Achievement in Direction at the Cinema Eye Honors.

She is currently editing the third film of the trilogy, a documentary about

NSA surveillance.

She is executive producer of Ra’anan Alexandrovicz’ The Law in These Parts

(2011), which won the Sundance Film Festival World Cinema Jury Prize.

Poitras received a Peabody Award and an Independent Spirit Award

nomination for Flag Wars (2003), a film made with Linda Goode Bryant.

Poitras was the recipient of the “True Vision Award” at the True/False Film

Festival in 2010, and was invited to participate in the 2012 Whitney Biennial.

The same year, she was chosen as one of 23 MacArthur Fellows by the

John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.

The IDA’s Courage Under Fire Award is given in recognition of conspicuous bravery in the pursuit of truth. This award is presented to documentary filmmakers by theirpeers for putting freedom of speech—represented in the crafts of documentaryfilmmaking and journalism—above all else, even their own personal safety.

Jacqueline Donnet Emerging Documentary Filmmaker Award

Zachary Heinzerling

Zachary Heinzerling began 2013 by earning the Documentary Directing

Award at the Sundance Film Festival, as well as securing a distribution

deal with RADiUS-TWC, for his debut feature, Cutie and the Boxer,

which he worked on for five years.

Heinzerling studied philosophy at the University of Texas-Austin. He

moved to New York City after graduation, working as a field producer and

camera operator, including on the Emmy Award-winning documentaries

Breaking the Huddle, Assault in the Ring, and Lombardi.

What mainly drew him to New York, though, was not just the work,

but, more so, the mystique and the energy of the city that had drawn so

many aspiring artists before him. In 2009, he met his Brooklyn neighbors,

Noriko and Ushio Shinohara, 40-year partners in art and life—and so began

the making of Cutie and the Boxer.

And as Heinzerling filmed their story over the next five years, he attracted

the support and attention of such major players as San Francisco Film Society,

Cinereach, the Jerome Foundation, the Tribeca Film Institute, the New York

State Council for the Arts and the Berlinale Talent Campus. In 2011, he was

selected as one of 25 filmmakers for the Film Society of Lincoln Center and

IFP’s Emerging Visions Program during the New York Film Festival.

The Jacqueline Donnet Emerging Filmmaker Award includes a $5,000

cash award from the Estate of Jacqueline Donnet. As of 2013, the recipient

also receives a donation of post-production services valued at $50,000,

made possible by Modern VideoFilm and Red Fire Films. IDA gratefully

acknowledges the estate of Jacqueline Donnet and Diane Dickenshield,

G. William Hass, Betty Harford, Jack Larson, Victoria Sanders and

Joan Shigekawa, and Modern VideoFilm and Red Fire Films, for their

generous support of this award.

The Jacqueline Donnet Emerging Documentary Filmmaker Award recognizes the achievements of a filmmaker who has made a significant impact at the beginning of his or her career in documentary film.
