H.E BENJAMIN WILLIAM MKAPACHANCELLORThe Guest of Honour (The Rt Honorable Speaker of Parliament of Uganda), other distinguished guests, university sponsors, members of the university management and staff, the student body, graduands of today and your families, all friends of Cavendish University Uganda, ladies and gentlemen.
Today we are celebrating the 9th graduation ceremony of Cavendish University Uganda. It is the first graduation we are doing virtually because we wanted to balance the need for promoting students’ employability with the need to prevent the spread of the Novel Corona Virus. I congratulate you - the graduands – wherever you are watching this from, because you worked very hard and endured the pain and sacrifice that goes with rigorous and highly demanding university education. I know that education journey is neither short nor smooth. It requires hard work, sustained courage and the constant stress of having to sit periodic examinations to prove that you actually mastered the intended learning outcomes. I join your professors and instructors who trained you, in applauding your achievement. By the same token, I join your parents, sponsors, relatives and friends who must be overjoyed that you have successfully completed your studies at Cavendish University Uganda and are graduating today.
For this 2020 graduation, the university management chose the theme: “Research and Innovation as Tools for Growth and Development”. I approved this theme because I know that workable solutions to the global challenges of today and tomorrow cannot simply be by intuition but must be evidence-based. I also know that innovation is what will make the difference between today and tomorrow if the future is to be better than the present. There is not a single organisation in the world today that isn’t searching for innovative ways to improve its productivity, sustainability, efficiency and effectiveness. Your own employability and career development is thus dependent on your ability to convert your acquired knowledge into better ways of doing business, improving service delivery and scaling big ideas.
Having spent considerable years at Cavendish University Uganda, you have been exposed to a vast demography of people from different countries, cultures, ethnicities, languages and learning environments. I urge you to build on this and create powerful and helpful networks that will open doors of opportunities for you in different geographical and political settings. Make use of the generic skills in Information Technology and digital literacy to maintain and reinforce your contacts, and to exchange constructive information among yourselves.I do commend your professors and instructors for equipping you with knowledge, skills and competencies that will enable you to navigate the world of business and industry and make your own contribution.
As I conclude, I would like to emphasise that success is not automatic. It requires a strategy, hard work, sustained focus, continuous learning and discipline. To be innovative, you will have to constantly challenge yourself to perform higher by devising better ways of achieving more with less or with nothing at all. The qualifications you are earning today are testament to your polished skills and capabilities and, therefore, you have no excuse for not succeeding. You should leave here with determination and confidence to devise solutions to challenges facing humanity today. You have my blessings and best wishes for a great future. Thank you and may God bless you.
Congratulations!
H.E Benjamin MkapaFormer President of the United Republic of TanzaniaChancellor, Cavendish University Uganda.

Problem-Based-Living: Owning the Tiniest House, on the Tiniest Land and Solving Problems
The theme of todays’ graduation is research and innovation for development. This theme is important and unavoidable because those of us with university-level education and skills in Africa have the unique responsibility to develop this continent. There is an insightful and wise verse in the Bible, Luke Chapter 12 Verse 48, and it says:
“For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall much be required; and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more”Your graduation today, is proof that our continent has given much to you, and that it will “ask the more” of you.
Why will Africa “ask the more” of you?
Because you are the most knowledgeable and most skilled of us, because you are part of less than 10% of us with university-level education. So, what should you as a university graduate living in Africa do for yourself and for Africa and the world? One, you should prepare for what I call problem-based-living by quickly finding a way to own the tiniest piece of land in your name and in a place of your choice.
Two, you should find a way to build or own the tiniest modern house on that tiniest piece of land. That tiniest land and tiniest house will be a form of insurance for you. Insurance against the laughter of those who did not go to university.
They are waiting to laugh at you. They will say “look at this one, he claims to be a graduate, but he is a failure who does not even have a house.” After you acquire ownership of the tiniest house in the tiniest land, you must then focus on identifying and solving our problems. You will make money and live a purposeful life if you identify some of our problems and focus your life on finding solutions for us. Your education places a burden on you. A burden of solving our collective problems. This problem-solving may happen at an existing company, or in a government department or in a completely new enterprise that you will create.
According to the Mission of Cavendish University, you have already been transformed into an R-E-E-E graduate, and that is, into a person that is “responsible, educated, employable, and entrepreneurial.” Therefore, in my opinion, you have already been prepared for a life that will be very hard, and very purposeful, and hopefully, very happy.
Please note that happiness, of which we all dream, comes not from lazy comfort and pleasure, and comes not from alcohol and drugs, but comes from purposeful hard work. No pain, no gain. And no purposeful pain, no happiness.
In conclusion, I will say that if your education is to mean anything, you must use online resources to continually educate yourself on how best to become a researcher and an innovator. You should make money and get rich not from corruption, but from deploying research and innovation in solving our problems.
Thank You and God Bless!
Message from the Chairperson, University Council - Prof Olubayi Olubayi
Cavendish University Uganda 9th Graduation 2020 / May15
invited to participate in the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) debate in Arusha; we were voted the best private university (hence Golden Medal Award Winners) by the Consumer Choice Awards; we improved from position 17 to position 11 in the University Ranking in Uganda conducted by UniRank (see https://www.4icu.org/ug); we were the second best university in Uganda in the innovation challenge sponsored by the worldwide Institute for Electronic and Electrical Engineers (IEEE), just to mention a few.
This year, the theme of our graduation (and of the year 2020) is: “Research and Innovation as tools to achieve Growth and Development”. Innovation and excellence are some of our highly cherished institutional core values. This is what produces new knowledge, which is sine qua non for innovation and development. Because of innovation, we are able to hold this graduation, which is both scientific and virtual and to virtually access our students, their families and all our stakeholders who are viewing us live on various media in real time.
To our graduands, you have been taught that innovation requires skills in critical thinking, digital literacy, data manipulation, statistical methods and communication. You have been trained and equipped with these skills and competencies. CUU trusts that you will apply them to make a significant contribution to your families and communities because you have already demonstrated resilience, hard work and commitment. You have passed through a rigorous and intense academic process of training and formation. For this, I congratulate you. Aim higher, trust God, continue to learn and ensure to stay safe from situations that can compromise your health. I wish you God’s choicest blessings in all your endeavours.
Esteemed guests, parents, sponsors, staff, students and graduands, I wish to welcome you all to the ninth graduation ceremony of Cavendish University Uganda (CUU), and the first ever scientific and virtual graduation to be held. The outbreak of the Novel Corona Virus which causes Covid-19 led to the shutdown of universities and other education institutions almost all over the globe. At CUU, we decided to migrate all our contact students to the Cavendish University Learning Platform (CULP) that was already serving the Distance Learning students. We therefore seamlessly switched to online study following the regulatory guidelines in Uganda. Our professors and instructors kept conducting their classes leveraging technology such as Zoom, WebEx and Google Meet. Moreover, we maintained all operational and administrative activities including holding virtual meetings of Faculty Boards, University Senate and Council following our academic and operations calendar. We at CUU have not missed any academic or operations activity. We are not missing the graduation!
The purpose of holding this scientific and virtual graduation is to enable our deserving students to obtain their academic papers so that they can secure new jobs, promotions at the workplace, job security or pursue further education and make their contribution to the world. Therefore, today, CUU will gift to the world a total of 809 graduates who are well trained, highly skilled and intellectually grounded to add value in terms of providing excellent services and crafting workable solutions to the social and development challenges facing humanity today and in the future.Last year, our graduation (and annual) theme was: commitment to excellence as a key to graduate success. As a university, we lived to the expectations of this theme: we emerged the best in the 2019 inter-university debate competitions; subsequently our debate team was

For example, CUU students developed a mobile application to monitor the public transport system to enable motor vehicle owners and inspectors to determine where vehicles were at any given time, their speed and how passengers were being treated for which same innovation CUU emerged 02nd best in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Innovation Challenge for Uganda. A popular Pan-African Edutainment TV series airing on NBS TV, “Kyaddala”, was produced by Usama Mukwaya, a CUU student. To mention but a few.
The past year saw CUU make big leaps in corporate development and public engagement, the crowning moment of which was when, in November 2019, our university was voted as the Best Private University in Uganda in the Consumer Choice Awards. We were able to demonstrate that, beyond teaching, learning and research, CUU shapes the public path of progress through our well organised University Community Health Day, University Employability Forum and the International Public Health conference, all of whose attendance included leaders of corporate, government and quasi-government institutions; academicians and industry practitioners alike.
I would like to recognise the efforts made by our sponsors, regulators, staff and alumni in supporting our graduands and to wish our new ambassadors success in your new environments by demonstrating that you are Responsible, Educated, Employable and Entrepreneurial citizens - REEE!
Congratulations to our 2020 graduating class on today’s graduation which is special for me because it the first time that a complete cycle of students, including bachelor students, gets to complete since I joined Cavendish University Uganda (CUU) just over 3 years ago. These are students who joined CUU in January 2017. It is during this period that we have brought to bear the various facets of our student-centric teaching and learning model which presented to us a few challenges initially, but now also many opportunities. Now is the time to witness their readiness for work and entrepreneurship following what I trust was an intense transformation period at our university.
The theme of today’s graduation, “Research and Innovation as tools to achieve Growth and Development” is very apt and shows the continuous maturation of CUU in its path to reaching the top echelons of the higher education space in Uganda and the region.
Innovation is one of our university’s values and therefore imprinted in our university’s culture. Innovation is no longer a choice. As we have seen this year, with the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, innovation is a necessity for individuals, families, companies and nations to survive and thrive in the future, a future increasingly uncertain. The “new normal” post Covid-19 will require everyone to push him/herself to the limits otherwise lifestyles and livelihoods will be significantly disrupted by new and uncertain global dynamics imposed on all.
I would therefore like to recognise our very innovative students who have continued to come up with methods and tools that are fundamentally new and original and that seek to offer new perspectives in solving important problems faced by our society today.
Message from the Executive Director - Mr. David Mutabanura
Cavendish University Uganda 9th Graduation 2020 / May17
Graduation is such an important milestone for graduands and it signifies the culmination of several years of hard work. Today is a celebration of those efforts, and a time for us to thank the members of staff who have been absolutely committed to helping the graduands have a memorable learning experience. We sincerely thank the parents, guardians and sponsors for the immense support to the graduands, and the various stakeholders for their contribution which has enabled us to continue producing market ready graduates. Congratulations to the graduands. We are very proud of you.
The qualifications being received today are a compliment to Cavendish University Uganda (CUU) and represent success in our mission to provide an education that transforms students into Responsible, Educated, Employable and Entrepreneurial (REEE) citizens.
In 2016, we launched the Academic Merit Scholarships to provide financial assistance to brilliant, but financially disadvantaged students. The awardees were further empowered by the opportunity to provide peer tutoring. Teaching peers is an effective way of gaining mastery while at the same time enabling more active learning with greater student ownership of the learning process. The first cohort of scholarship students is graduating today. Congratulations to the pioneer CUU Academic Merit Scholars! We find ourselves at the brink of the fourth industrial revolution which requires humans to develop creative and emotional intelligence as well as perceptual and manipulative thinking, to avoid replacement by automated platforms. At CUU, we embed emotional intelligence into our curriculum and impart employability skills to students starting with the course syllabi, active classrooms, flipped learning, technology- mediated hours, blended learning and the development of soft skills so highly valued by employers through experiential learning (community service, mentoring, study tours, and internships).
Not surprisingly, the third education revolution is also unfolding and it dictates a move towards continuous, lifelong learning in order to meet the needs of today’s economy and the future world of work. We are moving from a more protective employee society towards a more challenging entrepreneurial society. This means that even when employed, one has to act in an entrepreneurial spirit. The good news is that the graduands leave university today well prepared to navigate the ambiguity of the future job market, with the best possible education to successfully enter the workforce, and with the intellectual skills that make it possible for them to be life-long learners.
In conclusion, I call each of the graduands to action. Go out from here, proudly with testamur in hand, with confidence, basking in the importance of your achievement. I urge those who have not reached the academic pinnacle to consider returning to CUU for their Bachelor and Master degrees. Join the alumni association and make significant contribution to your alma mater. Remember, the true value of your education lies in how you use it for the greater good.
Serve your clients and community with humility, passion, and gratitude. Continually hone your craft. Keep learning and adapting to stay relevant. Be not afraid of going slowly, only be afraid of standing still. Resolve to become a T-shaped professional by gaining an understanding of systems and the ability to function as an “adaptive innovator”. Do not be afraid to cross the boundaries between disciplines. Continue to live by the values of CUU in all that you do – embody excellence, embrace innovation, uphold high ethical standards, be responsible, respectful, self- reliant and operate with integrity. These values will stand you in good stead long after the technology has changed. You can do it and my best wishes are with you.
