This Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormon) Temple was built in 1983, designed by Emil Fetzer in a style similar to other temples around the world. Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga, Pelehake. This 1986 church by George Moala takes the form of a fale, supported by a customary lashed-pole structure. a must-see Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga, Kolovai. Built in 1976 and one of several small churches of the period adapting the fale form to contemporary church use. a must-see Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga, Haateiho. Designed and built in the early 1970s by a Danish man known only as Tavi. St Michael’s Church (Catholic), Lapaha. The 1894 stone church was demolished after the 2006 earthquake and rebuilt in 2008 with a tower reminiscent of the original but with a fale-style body. Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga, Haatafu. Almost post-modern in the use of a broken gable and a Bible design for the façade. ‘Atele National Indoor Stadium, Lotoha’apai. Designed by Jaimi Associates, responsible for much commercial architecture of the period around the South Pacific. Completed in 1994. Langi, Mua. Known as langi, these ancient pyramidal royal tombs are located at the old capital. See map 4 for details. a must-see Bell Tower. A tour de force of concrete engineering, located on the road to the Mapu ‘a Vaea blowholes on the windward southern coast. University of the South Pacific, Lotohaapai. Rounds Lee & Partners, from which Jaimi Associates evolved, were both involved in this lovely village-style complex, completed in the early 1990s. a must-see St Joseph’s Church (Catholic), Kolonga. Another recent church that incorporates a contemporary version of the fale in its design. Church of the Sacred Heart (Catholic), Houma. A classical church designed and built in 1940 by Father George Callet, involved in the construction of many mid- century churches. Moulton Memorial Chapel, Tupou College, Toloa. Lloyd Evans (South Pacific Architecture Network), with George Moala, designed this very large fale, with a marvellous glulam structure, in 1986. a must-see Haamonga a Maui and Maka Faakinanga, between Niutoua and Kolonga.
