American Bikers for Awareness,Training, and Education (A.B.A.T.E.)of Minnesota is a not for profit, grassroots organization that is committedto educating motorcyclists and thegeneral public about motorcycling.A.B.A.T.E. members ride many dif-ferent types and brands of motorcy-cles. We are all people with acommon interest in a common activ-ity. The fact that we share an interestin motorcycling is more importantthan the type of motorcycle we ride.

There are chapters of A.B.A.T.E. lo-cated throughout Minnesota. Each ofthese chapters is represented on theA.B.A.T.E. Board of Directors (BOD).The BOD also includes theA.B.A.T.E. state officers. The BODmeets once each quarter to discussthe operation of the organization. Inaddition, each chapter holds amonthly meeting in their area of thestate. A.B.A.T.E. is a member drivenorganization. Members are encour-aged to participate in any of thesemeetings.

A.B.A.T.E. seeks to promote the pos-itive aspects of motorcycling andstrives to protect the rights of motor-cyclists by being involved in the local,

state and national political process.Safer motorcycling, reducing acci-dents and fatalities can be best ac-complished by education andtraining of both the motorcyclists andthe general public, not necessarilythrough additional legislation.

Our ability to enjoy many freedomswhile riding motorcycles in Min-nesota is the direct result of the workdone by motorcyclists in our state. These people have joined togetherto fight for our rights and freedoms.

The efforts of these people havemade Minnesota a leader in motor-cycle safety. We have one of thetoughest licensing standards in thenation, the best public awarenessprograms, and the most comprehen-sive rider education programs in thenation. These efforts have helped re-duce motorcycle accidents, injuries, and fatalities in spite of the growingnumber of licensed motorcyclists inMinnesota.

To continue these efforts we needyour support and participation. Showyour commitment to protecting andpreserving your rights as a motorcy-clist in Minnesota. Participate in the

meetings, rides, and the fundraisingactivities. You will be informedabout the motorcycle activities inthe state by receiving Road Noise, the A.B.A.T.E. monthly news publi-cation. A.B.A.T.E. is fun, educa-tional and a great way to meetpeople and make new friends withsimilar interests.

With your help, we can continue topromote the positive image of mo-torcyclists. If you want more infor-mation about A.B.A.T.E., pleaseattend any of our meetings, meetother members, and ask questions.

We are pleased that you have de-cided your rights are worth protect-ing, that the positive aspects ofmotorcycling are worth promoting, that education is important, and thatthe cost of an A.B.A.T.E. member-ship is a small price to pay to pre-serve and promote these principles.

Members are the most importantthing that A.B.A.T.E. has, so ThankYou for becoming a member andwe look forward to seeing you atour events.

Wow, Summer is zooming along at break-neck speed and weare quickly approaching the end of our riding season.

Before I forget, a Big Thanks to Jim and Kristi Orn and herbrother Larry for the very relaxing and country setting for ourJuly B.O.D. Always good to get out of a Motel and have a greatmeeting, which we did.

If you are at our State Rally reading this, Welcome! You are infor a treat as our folks have put together a Rally to be remem-bered, as they do every year. Great music, food and the bestesttimes to be found anywhere in the State. Check out the ven-dors, enjoy some music and just relax as we say Goodbye tosummer, the A.B.A.T.E. way. The people in Litchfield are al-ways happy to see the bikes come rolling through town onLabor Day weekend, so be sure and say Hi to them as you do.

It's not too early to be thinking of Bikerday next February as wewill be making plans for that as it gets closer. Next year a evenbigger crowd would make a tremendous impression, so geteveryone on the same track and make sure they are kept in-formed so they can be there.

I didn't make it out to the Black Hills this year but was kept in-formed and from what I have heard, all arrived safe (and a fewwet) and our friends from Iowa were in rare form. Ya know,Minnesota riders do leave a mark out there every year as weare the groups that over run Central City and the ones that arelistened to and looked up to on Thursday in Whitewood asSMRO's from around the country gather and share facts andnews about their State. We are all that and more because ofour dedicated members. Keep that in mind as we continue tosign up new members and spread the Gospel of A.B.A.T.E.

So, there you have it....

Ride Safe, Be Responsible, make a Difference....

See you on the Road,

Kevin

We have all done it. You see a good looking person on thestreet, fit and trim, and you think “Man, they got it made.” Notgiving a thought to the hours they spend working out, the costof their health club membership, home fitness equipment, andhealthy diet. What looks great on the outside is actually the re-sult of lots of money and years of hard work. Recently I was ata gathering of motorcycling rights activists from around thecountry and during conversations I kept hearing “You Min-nesota guys got it good.” And they are right! No adult helmetlaw, no handlebar height law, no check points, blue dot taillights are legal, a motorcyclist equal access bill, ok to proceedwhen a red light does not change, a great motorcycle safetyprogram, vertical and handicap motorcycle license plates, andthe list goes on and on. These fellow activists explained howhard they have to work just so they can hope to ride freesomeday. I got the feeling they were inferring that Minnesotamotorcyclists do not have to work very hard now that we haveall these great things. So it was ironic when Kirk “Hardtail”Willard, Motorcycle Riders Foundation President, addressedthe crowd, he said something to the effect of “People don’t re-alize how much work it is to maintain the rights and freedomswe already have”.

And we have our work cut out for us if we want to “keep look-ing good.” It is no secret that news media takes a dim view ofmotorcycling, constantly portraying freedom loving bikers asless than intelligent. Now they have been joined by a chorus ofgovernment regulatory agencies and insurance companygroups all promoting the same message; mandatory helmetlegislation for all riders in all states. As if by magic helmets onheads will stop crashes from happening. But the media likesthe approach because it is quick and easy to explain, allowingthem to move on to more interesting things like turning urineinto drinking water (no kidding, a front page story). Also, realiz-ing the ineffectiveness of ranting in editorials, anti-motorcyclinggroups are learning our tactics and countering with their ownlegislative approaches and political action committees. Justtype in “motorcycle noise” in a Google search and you will geta small glimpse into the future of defending Minnesota motor-cycling. These are not anti noise, pro helmet, or even safetygroups. Make no mistake–these people are anti motorcyclingand will use any means at their disposal to see us off the road. And our task will keep getting more difficult as the percentageof riders with the attitude of “I wear a helmet all the time sowhat do I care about a mandatory law” increases. Remember seat belt legislation? That’s what happened; percentages kept rising untilthe mandatory law became easy to pass.

Freedom is expensive and a lot of work. So you better stay in shape and spend your money on the things that will have you lookinggood for the motorcycling fights right around the corner.

Yours in freedom,

Mack

RALLY SPONSORSHIPSUB-COMMITTEE REPORTWENDY STEINBORN (320) [email protected]

I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to eachand every one of our Sponsors; not only the Sponsors fromthis year’s rally, but all the past Sponsors as well. This year wehave not only met our goals, but exceeded them. And we haveyou, the Sponsors, along with all our recruiting chapter mem-bers to thank for that. This only tells me that A.B.A.T.E. of Min-nesota has created some great relationships with ourSponsors, and we hope these relationships will continue to getbigger and better each and every year.

As of this writing, we have a total of 46 sponsors and out of the46 we had 14 chapters and one District Director. I’d like to sayThank You again to the 20 people who took time out of theirbusy schedules to recruit these Sponsors. Without you, thisprogram would not succeed. The traveling plaque will behanded out at the October B.O.D. to the chapter who sold themost Sponsorships. Did your chapter win it this year?

Our thanks to all the Sponsors of the 2011 A.B.A.T.E. StateRally!

EDUCATION REPORTPAUL TJEPKES (320) [email protected]

September: Labor Day, State Rally, kids back to school, coolerweather, the beginning of fall. With that thought in mind, let'stalk education. I mean Driver Education. Driver Educationclasses in Minnesota are required to have some time devotedto motorcycle awareness in their curriculum. Our SHARE THEROAD program meets and exceeds these requirements. Allyou have to do is introduce yourself to the drivers-ed instructor. After introductions, give him/her a brief overview of what theSHARE THE ROAD program is all about. Chances are you willbe asked to be a presenter for motorcycle awareness. Nowyou will be able to influence hundreds of young minds by mak-ing them aware of motorcycles. They will remember thatBIKER who talked to them about motorcycles. They will re-member what you said. They will watch for us when they be-come drivers.

SO, get out there--MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!!

Ride Safe, Ride Free

PaulIts a lot easier to react than it is to think!

GAMBLING REPORTKIM OSTLUND (507) 334-7592 [email protected] WILSON AVENUE, FARIBAULT, MN 55021

Next meeting:

Saturday, September 4th, State Rally, Litchfield, 11:00 amFriday, October 14th, Best Value Inn, Crookston, 7:00 pm

I would like to take this opportunity, first off, to give a big thank you to Lorie Sindt for helping me once again this year with the vendors.Without her help I would not be able to do double duty at the rally. I also want to give a big thanks to the folks that helped sell the re-maining raffle tickets. It’s really great when I get extra volunteers so that I don’t have to sit at that table.

If you happen to be reading the September issue early online and realize that you still have State Rally Raffle tickets in your posses-sion sold or unsold, make sure that you bring them to the rally and turn them in only to me. I keep a log of all outstanding tickets andlike to update that log as I go during the weekend. All tickets need to be accounted for before I can do the drawing. And if you aren’tcoming to the rally make sure to contact someone from your chapter and send any outstanding tickets with them. Mention to them thatthey need to be turned in only to me. Not someone on my committee or any of the folks sitting at the table selling tickets. Next month Iwill report on the winners of the raffle. Since all expenses incurred on the raffle will not be known until later in September (20th), I willnot be able to report on whether we can do a payback or not until the October B.O.D. For the chapters that happen to have their meet-ings later in the month, you can contact me if you need that information for your meeting.

If there are any chapters out there that would like to order more buddy bears, we do have extras in stock. Please contact either myselfor Mack and we will make sure that you get the bears you need. Keep in mind that if you would like to pay for the bears using yourgambling funds, that you need to fill out a “Request To Use Gambling Funds” form, have it signed by your President and Treasurer, andmail that to me along with a current copy of the meeting minutes where that motion was approved. Also, when you are doing yourbuddy bear runs, please have the organizations that you are donating the bears fill out a receipt. These receipts need to be mailed tome for our files. If you don’t have a blank copy of the receipts, you can just use a regular sheet of paper. Make sure to include the fol-lowing information: Organization that is receiving the bears, how many bears, the chapter donating the bears, and a signature fromsomeone representing the organization that is receiving the bears. Remember, the buddy bears cannot be donated to any law en-forcement agency.

Hope everyone enjoyed the rally. Once again, I would love to see some more faces on this committee. Even if you don’t want to be acommittee member, you are more than welcome to attend the meetings. These meetings are open to all A.B.A.T.E. members.Granted, it is the committee that makes the decisions on what to raffle and how to donate the money. But it is the total population ofA.B.A.T.E. that gives input on such decisions and also approves all the expenditures of this committee. And most of the time that is thesame four or five people each month. New faces mean new and fresh ideas. So, if you want to see something changed, come to ameeting and voice your ideas.

Hi there, folks! I hope I got to chat with most of you at the Rally.I am excited to see how you all liked the new shirts and sweatsI ordered. I hope a lot of you came and worked at the table. Iwould like to say thank you to those of you that do/did help me.I always appreciate an extra hand.

I am also pleased to say that my limping Blazer has had a littlelift via a new transmission just in time for the Rally, ugh andyeah. I would like to remind folks to keep up the maintenanceon their rides because it does make a difference. I have yet tobe stranded by my little truck and she has been very good atpulling that trailer of A.B.A.T.E. products around. Well, I don'thave much else to say right now so I think I will sit back andrest for a bit before I have to get ready for A.B.A.T.E. U.

Keep your nose to the wind and ride like there's no tomorrow.

LEGISLATIVE REPORTTODD RIBA (952) [email protected]

Something is missing

So here I am getting ready for the big ride to Sturgis and I have to get a Road Noise article hammered out before I leave so I am look-ing to the ride ahead for inspiration. I can’t help but think as I pack that it sure is nice that I have freedom of choice in the two or threestates that I am going to ride in over the next week so I don’t need to pack a helmet. Speaking of freedom, Minnesota is one of beststates to ride in if you are a freedom loving biker, we have the red light law, the anti discrimination law, blue dot taillights are legal andso are ape hangers. South Dakota isn’t far behind, yes they hassle riders for high handlebars but they are ahead of us in one categoryand that is justice for fallen bikers. Several years ago Congressman Bill Janklow ran a stop sign in his Cadillac and tragically killed abiker from Minnesota by the name of Randy Scott. Janklow served 100 days in jail and there was outrage from all around the countryand you still see the patches today that say, “My life is worth more than 100 days, Randy Scott”. I have news for you, if that accidenthappened here in Minnesota Janklow wouldn’t have served one day much less 100 days and I think that is just wrong and we need tofix that.

I asked Lake Chapter to make a motion at the July A.B.A.T.E. of MN Board of Directors (B.O.D.) meeting in regards to our “EnhancedPenalties’ Bill”. The motion asked that the Chapter Reps bring a proposal back to the Chapters for a vote and then the Chapter Repsare to bring the voice of the Chapters back to the B.O.D. in October. There are three choices for the Chapters to choose from and theyare; 1) pursue an enhanced penalties bill with the full support of A.B.A.T.E. of MN by supporting Motorcycle PAC of MN, writing lettersto our elected officials about the bill, increasing our attendance at Bikerday, and meeting face to face with our elected officials. 2) Wedon’t like that plan and here is another one. 3) We don’t need this bill, the law is fine the way it is.

I am asking Chapters to vote for plan number one and here is why. These four methods are tried and true. I know motorcycle rights ac-tivists from all over the country that have combined these four methods with great success. I also know motorcycle rights groups fromaround the country that have got caught up in bickering, back stabbing, drama, conspiracy theories, rumors, and they have lost what-ever fight they were fighting because they held petty grudges for years and years. Our choice is simple, we all need to admit that weare not perfect and therefore we should not expect our leaders and Motorcycle Rights Organizations to be perfect and we should over-come the desire to be real life soap opera stars and we should move forward in a positive and unified front. If we can do that we will getthis bill passed and the only thing missing will be the negative nonsense that destroys freedom in the wind. So if you want justice forour fallen brothers and sisters let’s get positive and let’s get it done. If you want to hold grudges and get those conspiracy theories allwhipped up please leave me out because it won’t work and it is a complete waste of my time.

See you down the road and stand and be counted, if you don’t someone else will. Todd

DIAL A RIDECHECKOUTWWW.MOTORCYCLEDIALARIDE.ORG

Next meeting:September 4th at the State Rally at 2:00 pm

So far it has been a great season for riding. I’ve sure been putting on a lot more miles than I did last year.

With this article, I would like to introduce myself to all who get the Road Noise. My name is Michael Taylor. I hold the position of theDial-A Ride secretary and I am also the Rolling Prairie Chapter Rep. I am responsible for taking the minutes of the meeting and gettingour issues posted in the Road Noise.

I want to take this opportunity to tell you all just what Dial-A-Ride is all about. You may have probably heard it before, but I am going tocover it again. Motorcycle Dial-A-Ride was established in 1990 as a 501C3 non-profit/charitable organization. Our goal is to reduce theincidents of motorcyclists riding while impaired. I will cover what we consider “impaired” in future articles as well as post them on ourwebsite, www.motorcycledialaride.org.

Our goal is accomplished in three ways:

1. We educate motorcyclists about the consequences of drinking and riding. We strive to promote responsible decision making. Ourmessage is: If you ride, don’t drink / If you drink, don’t ride. This is accomplished by using our informational handouts; get homesafe cards, bar napkins, BAC calculator, and ride straight information which can be found on our web site.

2. We encourage the use of intervention techniques. We promote motorcyclists helping motorcyclists and encourage individuals andbusiness owners to intervene if at all possible if they know a rider is in an impaired state and is planning on riding. Some sugges-tions for intervention are:

a. Eliminate the need to ride by keeping the motorcycle and rider at the present location.

b. Find a safe place to store the motorcycle and furnish alternate transportation for the rider.

c. Find a sober rider for the motorcycle and alternate transportation for the rider.

3. We have volunteers throughout the state that provide safe transportation for impaired riders, their passengers, and their motorcy-cles. Just call Motorcycle Dial A Ride @ 1-888-DIAL-RID(E) or 1-888-342-5743 to arrange for a volunteer to help transport therider, passenger, and motorcycle to a safe location.

Motorcycle Dial-A-Ride has an all-volunteer Board of Directors. Volunteers throughout the State of Minnesota provide pickup services. We are supported through charitable donations from individuals, businesses and other motorcycle related organizations. Much of ourprinted educational material is provided by the Minnesota Motorcycle Safety Center with dollars collected from endorsed motorcycleriders in Minnesota. A.B.A.T.E. of Minnesota has been a longtime supporter through their contributions and volunteers.

As an individual or business, you can designate Motorcycle Dial-A-Ride as your charity of choice for your United Way contributions. Wedo not have an agency number, so you will need to inform United Way you would like you donation to go to: Motorcycle Dial-A-Ride,388 9th Ave. W., Mail Box D, St Paul Park, MN. 55071. Let your fellow workers know that they can also donate to us, or you can simplymake a donation to us as a concerned private citizen.

On a closing note, if you would like to sit in on one of our meeting, or if you are interested in becoming a volunteer, check out our meet-ing at the State Rally. If you don’t plan on coming to the rally, you can still come to the meeting. We will insure that you get free admis-sion to enter the grounds and join us at the meeting. We would enjoy you being there.

Thanks for your support and keep’em on two.

NCOM REPORTFRANK ERNST (612) [email protected]

In the past there has been discussion about the confiscation of club colors, now we are hearing of rulings on the issue.

LOS ANGELES, CA.—A federal judge has rejected an unprecedented bid by the U.S. government to seek control of a gang's nameand its identity—via its logo—through a court order in a case involving the notorious Mongols motorcycle club.

In an eight-page ruling filed Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Otis Wright said he must "regrettably" rule in favor of the Mongols becausethe gang itself was not named in a 2008 racketeering indictment and it maintained exclusive ownership of the trademarks.

Wright granted the biker gang's petition and vacated a preliminary order of forfeiture he signed last year. Prosecutors, for the first timeever, had sought to take control of the Mongol name and the insignia that shows a pony tailed Genghis Khan-like figure aboard a chop-per. If Wright had signed the prosecution's proposed order, the government would be the owner of the logo and the club's name.

"I guess it was their belief that somehow it would make a difference to the organization, causing it to cease to exist," said GeorgeSteele, an attorney who represented the Mongols Nation Motorcycle Club. "It's heartening to know the law does what it's supposed todo and protects you from those who try to seize your property and your liberty."

U.S. attorney's spokesman Thom Mrozek said his office will review the ruling and consider all options, including an appeal.

Prosecutors argued the logo should be forfeited because the Judge sides with biker gang over logo trademarks were acquired andmaintained by former Mongol president Ruben "Doc" Cavazos while the club was involved in criminal activity. Cavazos has pleadedguilty to racketeering conspiracy and is expected to be sentenced later this year.

Steele countered that a person cannot own a collective membership insignia, and Wright seemed to agree in his ruling. "There is noevidence that Cavazos or any other individual member of the organization holds or ever held an ownership interest in the trademarks inquestion," Wright wrote. The law "does not impose liability on the racketeering enterprise if it is not named as a 'person.'"

The effort was part of the indictment that accused gang members of murder, drug trafficking and torture. More than 100 people facedcharges in state and federal courts, and dozens have pleaded guilty to crimes ranging from drug possession to conspiracy.

Another judge issued an injunction in late 2008 barring Mongol members from wearing the logo. The move led to numerous seizuresacross the nation of Mongol-related gear. Wright last year entered a preliminary order of forfeiture, but he found in favor of the club inSeptember, ruling that none of the defendants had a forfeitable ownership interest in the logo, and vacated his order.

Prosecutors had more evidence to show Wright that Mongol members knew Cavazos was the sole owner of the logo, including a depo-sition in April where the former gang leader claimed the insignia was his property. "They were in my personal control to begin (with),"Cavazos said. "Mongol Nation is mine." The club's website displays the logo on its home page and promises to have an online storewith its black-and-white apparel soon.

Is this the end of this issue or will there be appeals and additional attempts by government to try to disassemble motorcycle clubs? Wewill keep you informed if things change.

On a lighter note we have heard much about the license plate reading devices being used by government. On my return trip from theNCOM convention in New Mexico I came around the toll highway outside of Denver. The tollbooths are now all closed and license platescanner reading your plate collects the toll and then they send you a bill. I think I was pretty lucky it must have missed my plate so Ididn’t get a bill, It appears I saved $2.80, everything helps when you are on social security. Plate readers may not always be as effec-tive as government agencies would like.

Enjoy the ride, be mindful of the freedom and do what you can to preserve both.

BORDERLAND www.borderlandabate.orgNext meeting:September 17, 2:30 pm, Sportsmans Lodge, Baudette.Upcoming events: A.B.A.T.E. of Minnesota State Rally, September, 2-5: LitchfieldMWMC (Max's Bash) Labor Day weekend, Roosevelt

Hello Borderland!

I know the upcoming events thing is a little nip-n-tuck, but if you get your Road Noise like I do, you will get a chance to read this in time toget on your bike and attend one of these two rallies. We have members promoting A.B.A.T.E. at "Max's Bash". So if you're not at the StateRally, get over there and support them. They do such awesome work for charities! As for you MWMC-A.B.A.T.E. members, Thanks.A.B.A.T.E. of MN is a leader on Motorcycle Rights! We need all of you.

I was just thinking about the early motorcycle rights in Minnesota... Bob Illingworth, the MMRA, and the repeal of the helmet law for safety, awareness, training and education. We think of the "Share the Road" program, hundreds and hundreds of presentations. There are nostats on "Lives Saved" But we know! It's great that Minnesota is at a 14 year low for motorcycle fatalities, but odds are that would go upnext year. Anyway, moving on to the Borderland Chapter, Member of the Month is our secretary Arno Burreson. Summer is winding downbut some of our best fall riding is yet to come!

On July 16, member and friend, Bruce Berg hit a deer while riding his motorcycle. We will miss seeing andhearing his 95' Road King, but we are Thankful to the Lord and his crash bar for saving his life.

We are all looking forward to our ride in meeting at Sportsman's Lodge. See ya there,

Twistin' da Wick, Tim

GREAT CAMPING...

It is crazy that it is already August but there is still a lot of great riding to do. Thanks to Lonnie and Melissa for sharing their grilling partywith everyone! Those of you that have not experienced the State Rally should head on down. It is a great time with great music, greatfood, and great people. Also try to make it to Newfolden on the 11th. Some suggested camping there on the 10th so it is not such an earlymorning. Hope to see everyone out and about!

Good day everyone! It is a great day today (8-10-11), 75 degrees is perfect riding weather for Santa. As I write this newsletter a lot of youare enjoying Sturgis. I sure wish I were with you. Be sure to share the pictures and the memories with us all. Let’s start with the FreedomFirst Riders Fricken Fifth Birthday Day Party held in Clitheral at the “On the Corner Bar”. I like you a lot Bev for taking such good care ofus Freedom First Riders. I hope we didn’t mess up your yard with all the camping. I want to thank all of you that helped make this FFR an-niversary such a huge success. I would mention names but my brain is full and I don’t want to over think right now, it may hurt. The daystarted with pictures at Main Street Brewery in Alexandria, then a very nice bike ride, fantastic food (pig roast), plenty of beverages, musicby Gray Matter, music also by Mike Miller, piano solo Stevie (Lone Wolf) Wonder lol, and the bike games. I especially liked the weeniecontest. Santa and Shirley won the balloon toss. There was a slowest bike contest but there wasn’t a category for us 3 wheelers. I guessthat may have required too much time, lol. The best part of the whole night was the visiting and dancing with my fellow FFR’s. My lovingwife Donna reminded me several times throughout the evening how badly I smelled from the hard day of riding and playing. She said Icouldn’t go near her unless I showered so at about 2 am it was off to the lake. Well, I won’t go into details but what a riot we had. It wasrefreshing and very entertaining to say the least. Thank God there weren't any serious injuries, a definite do over. Oh, I do want to apolo-gize to any women my smelly, sweaty biker body may have come into contact with. If I had to do it all over again, I probably wouldn'tchange a thing. I had a great time with all of you. I think we might have scared Kelly’s mom back to Texas, what a nice lady. Ok everyone;I need to get ready to go enjoy some free brats and beer at the Beetles Ball game with Donna and her co-workers. You Freedom FirstRiders are great and strong as ever, keep up the great work everyone. See you all in Litchfield. I can’t wait to make some more memorieswith you. Oh! Oh! Scotty has a girl friend; Scotty has a girl friend, too cute.

Remember every one dies but not everyone lives. Make some memories and share some memories.

Freedom First Riders, Ride safe, Ride free, Ride proud.

You deserve it. “Expect the Unexpected” & “Let Those Who Ride Decide” Santa

As I am sending this in, I can't believe it's already August and bythe time we all read this it will be September. I'm praying to themotorcycle gods for a warm fall, this summer has flown by tooquickly.

This summer has been such a busy riding season that it was hardto attend every ride and event. But for those that I was luckyenough to go to, I had a blast. Thank you again to the Jack PineRiders Chapter and Wisconsin A.B.A.T.E. for a great time. We stillhave a few things left on our calendar; hope to see you all there!

Please don't forget our road clean up on September10th, withenough people to help out, the clean up part goes quickly and wealways make time for a little fun afterwards. We will meet at noon.

I want to mention that many of our local runs and events have suf-fered from poor turn out this year. Support your local Chapters,MC's, etc. The riding season is short and a lot of effort is put intothese events. Poor weather usually passes and many of theseevents had little to no rain, however the attendance was very low.Much time and money was wasted. Many of these events arefundraisers to support local charities and need your help to keepthem going.

Please look to the bike calendar or attend a meeting for eventsand runs. The summer may be over, but there is still a lot of greatriding ahead.

See you all soon.

Ride safe!

CENTRALNext meetings:September 11th, Bubba’s Bar & Grill, Sauk Rapids, 2:00 pmOctober 8th, Justin and Jessica’s house in Foley, 4:00 pm

After the October meeting we will be celebrating the 3rd annualWing Fest in Foley. The address is: 11000 115th Ave N.E. or call(320) 387-3534 for directions. Bring a side dish to share at WingFest and a beverage of your choice. So once again it’s our StateRally time and I know a number of people will be reading this atthe Rally and for some it may be the first copy of the Road Noiseyou have ever read. We all ride different types of bikes and weall ride for different reasons. The most common reason I hearfrom people is the sense of freedom. I thought I would sharesome the reasons I ride a bike and maybe you can relate tosome or all of them. The first is freedom. I think about this as Iam straddling a seat on a machine less that three feet widerolling down the road on two wheels at 60 mph with no seat beltor any metal, glass or airbags around me. It has to be the closestthing to just sitting on a jet engine and flying at a very low altitudeover hills and valleys. Second would be the wind in my face, bugs and all. Have you ever noticed all the aroma’s you take inas you ride? There are so many smells that take me back to myyouth the instant I smell them. There is the smell of dirt in thespring when the farmers are planting. There is the smell of freshcut grass or hay, cow manure, fresh tar on a new road or a 1968Plymouth with 440 or maybe a 1970 Chevelle with a 357 thattakes me back to the muscle car era. The third is riding roads Ihave never been on before and seeing new landscapes or farms, bridges, lakes, rivers or maybe some redneck’s place with somuch junk piled around it you could take a picture and sell it asart. I bought a boat two years ago. I have not put it in the wateryet. Every weekend when the weather is nice, rather than puttingthe boat in the water, I jump on the Harley and ride. I guess I did-n’t know just how much I like to ride when I bought that boat. Ilike to ride with friends in a group of bikers too. It’s not too oftenyou call up all your boat owner friends and go riding around on alake or river with a pack of boaters.

Well, one thing is for sure, everyone at the Rally enjoys motorcy-cles and as members of A.B.A.T.E. we are all fighting to keep thefreedom we now enjoy on the open road for whatever reason weride. Ride safe and enjoy the Rally.

NORTHEAST DISTRICT DIRECTORJEAN AFROOZ (763) [email protected] about to head out to Sturgis so I am writing this a little early! You are probably reading this at State Rally. We will be having a North-east District meeting the last Sunday in September. I will send out reminder emails to everyone and hope we have a nice day for a fallride to The Cricket in Rock Creek. The meeting starts at 2:00 pm. Everyone is welcome, but the Chapter Representatives are encour-aged to make it or send a replacement to bring back information to your chapter. A lot of great ideas have been shared at these meetingsand everyone benefits. I know this is short but it's late and I am getting up early to head out in the morning.

As always, if I can be of assistance to anyone in the district please don't hesitate to call or email me! I would be more than happy to helpwith anything I can. See ya' on the road! Hmmmm..... I guess,

Hey Sand Duners and friends,

Wow, what happened to the summer? Hard to believe that as we are reading this we are already either at or past our State Rally andsummer is just a bunch of fond memories. It is time to really start watching for the kids at school and the critters jumping out of theditches. Not that we ever quit doing that as motorcyclists. So as we enjoy the fall runs, enjoying our season change here in Minnesota, please ride safe.

Our State Coordinator, Mack Backlund and the MN MRF State Representative, Todd Riba, both talked at length at the July B.O.D. aboutthe importance of a strong showing at the State Capitol on Bikerday. We have a good amount of time to plan for that trip as it usually is inFebruary. So try to make it this year and if you are unable to, stop and send an email, letter, or make a phone call before Bikerday askingyour representatives to support your fellow motorcyclists when they come to visit.

Well on the lighter side, here are some pics, old and new. Congrats to Sand Dunes member Jodi for being named bartender of the Monthin RX magazine. Jodi works for Sand Dunes member Cheetoz, who owns Stoney's in Rockville and he is having his first ever Cheetoz'Fun Run on September 24th leaving Stoney's at 1:00 pm. A couple of stops, some pulled pork sandwiches by Leon at the end and aband. All for a free will donation to cover the food.

There is also a pic of an unidentified Sand Dunes officer demonstrating the "Low Ball Race" at our rodeo, one of the new events thateveryone seems to like.

Chapter Representative Matt at a past state rally, Stylin' on a now extinct ride.

And last but not least, the Prez, first lady, Dusty Bottoms and Kurt at Freedom First's bike show during the A.B.A.T.E. U. weekend.

Glad to see past members Ross and Roxanne Anderson are doing OK after their bike accident nineweeks ago. They have been a long time healing and Ross now has to have some surgery. Bestwishes for a quick recovery to you folks.

Keeping in mind those menand women that are servingour country, be safe and re-turn soon.

All the best, Ride free andride often,

Hello East Central!

Thank you to everyone who attended the Chapter Campout and those of you who made it to the State Rally. I know all at both events hada great time.

It's hard to believe the riding season is almost over. This has been a very hot/wet season. Hopefully you where able to get in some milesbetween the raindrops.

The other day a coworker said he saw a motorcyclist wearing full leathers riding down the highway (at first he thought it was me) notwearing a helmet. He asked me what good is that leather if you don't protect your head. I told him it's about the freedom to choose. Icould see by the look in his eyes he didn't understand. I broke the ice by telling him that leathers help save your tat's if you fall. Helaughed; I then responded with “your more likely to fall down the steps in your house” and asked him how would he like if the governmentmade a law that you had to wear a helmet every time you walked up or down stairs. I could see he was thinking about that one. I left himwith one last statement. “It's called freedom of choice and that is what makes America great.”

If you're reading this; then it's September and the days of summer are fading behind us.

What did you do to make your summer worthwhile? Me? I brought Buddy Bears to children with my fellow A.B.A.T.E. members and somegreat people from the COC. I watched my momma buy a sweet little number and relearn the joys of riding a motorcycle. I ogled bikesthat were sparkling out in the sun; bit my lip for the ones sitting out in the rain, the whole time daydreaming about just one of them beingmine. I let motorcyclists merge in front of me because I know how not to crowd them and told myself I was setting a good example forother drivers. I looked twice not only when pulling out of a drive, but also when making a turn, merging on the highway, and changinglanes. I felt sheer joy in participating in this great thing called LIFE with this great organization called A.B.A.T.E. I couldn't ask for a betterbunch of people to spend time with.

Next Southwest District Meeting September 24th, 2:00 pm at the Triple R Grill & Bar in Kimball

I want to give another big thank you for all the help at the July B.O.D. Thanks Larry for letting us invade your farm. And thank you to myfour biggest helpers of the weekend, Dale & Wendy Steinborn, Mike Edgett and last, but not least, Kristie. She’s the one that keeps megoing in the right direction and makes sure I am where I need to be. And believe it or not she cleans up my spelling and grammar onthese grapevines that I write. Thanks also Ron for bringing out the lunch wagon, it was very tasty. I know there were a lot more peoplethat helped out, and I am grateful for each and every one of you.

Here it is September; I could have sworn I just got my bike out about two weeks ago. As usual it has been a full summer. We even tooktime out and got our oldest son married off, that mean’s he can’t move back home, right?

Now that the State Rally is here (or just over for some of you reading this) fall is just around the corner and you know what fall bringsout… that’s right, chili feeds and Chapter fundraisers.

I hope everyone is saving a day of vacation from work to attend Bikerday at the Capitol, I know I am. We always need to stay vigilant andkeep our guard up for whatever they might try and throw at us next year.

Ride safe, till next time, Jim

Sturgis Rally riders have some of the best traveling weather we have had in years. The jet stream appears to bekeeping the rain to the east of us and cool fair weather is the result. Hope you all had a great time at the rally.

By the time you read this there is one supper gathering remaining at Wabasso, September 13th, we are planning on getting there earlyaround 5:00 pm and hope to see you there.

Hats off to Buffalo Ridge fundraiser helpers we made enough money to be able to get Buffalo Ridge A.B.A.T.E. into Silver status as aState Rally Sponsor. Ron has promised warmer weather this year for the rally at Litchfield, Labor Day Weekend. We have our tickets, hope you’ve got yours, we’ll see you there!

Got our first ripe tomato out of the garden last night, what a treat. There are two things money can’t buy, true love and homegrowntomatoes.

Hello All~

Another month has gone by and I really can't believe how fast this summer has gone! By the time ya'll read this, State Rally will havecome and gone.

This year certainly has been a memorable one with all the hot, steamy days and sultry nights... the third hottest summer on record Iheard. Minnesota has seen some bad flooding and storms this year as well, but I know our spirit has not been broken like the trees. Ihave seen neighbors coming together to clean up damage from Mother Nature's wrath.

What I haven't seen though, is A.B.A.T.E. members coming together as they have in the past. I know that Moose and I have had a hardyear this past year and we have not been able to participate in events and attend meetings like we have wanted to, but I have not seenmembers (who have been able) supporting other Chapter’s or State functions. This is disheartening to me because the camaraderie andsupport is what makes this organization so great. This is only one woman's opinion, take it for what you like.

The last thing I wanted to say is congratulations to Derek and Brittany V. on the arrival of their daughter,London Harley VanLuik. She is a wonderful gift!

Next meeting:Friday, September 9th at the Rushmore Senior Center, Rushmore, MN 7:30 pm

There seemed to be a mix-up with our grapevine article for August. I had it submitted on time. However, it didn't get into the correct handsfor whatever reason to be published. I would like to apologize to my chapter for the mix-up.

Burger nights brought the local community together in support of A.B.A.T.E. every other Wednesday at PD's in Rushmore this summer. We held our last one for this summer on August 31st. Southwest Chapter held our first ever street dance on July 9th in Rushmore, MN.Live music provided by Road Trip out of Sioux Falls, SD. Southwest Chapter President Kevin Harberts and I would like to send out aHUGE THANK YOU to EVERYONE that stepped up in such a big way and helped pull off this huge event!!! Also THANK YOU to SWDDJim Orn and his wife Kristie for attending!!! The local community appreciated the event and Kevin and I have received a lot of great com-ments about the performance of the band. Overall a great time was had by all!!! We'll see what happens for next year and possibly mak-ing it an annual event!?!?

I hope everyone that went to Sturgis had a great time! Don't forget about our own A.B.A.T.E. of Minnesota State Rally in September atMeeker County fair grounds in Litchfield, MN. While you are out and about on the area rides and at different events supporting otherchapters, sell tickets for the bike raffle being held at the State Rally. We need to get our gambling fund built up again, so we are able tocontinue to provide Buddy Bears.

CONGRATULATIONS to Southwest Chapter for being 4th in selling raffle tickets for the A.B.A.T.E.U. Raffle in 2011!!!! We may be one ofthe smaller chapters, but this just goes to show that we should NOT be underestimated!!! What is that saying, little but loud?!?

Whatever it is, it's better in the wind. ~Author Unknown

Yes, August was another busy month. With so many things going on at the same time our chapter was split up thismonth trying to make most of the events, but we were still well represented at all of them. Thank you to all the chap-ter members that helped out at the last minute and participated in the Halls of Magic show at the Meeker CountyFair. Thanks to all the members who helped with road guarding for the Shane Piehl Fundraiser Run. Thank you to all the members thattook part in the Twine Ball Days parade in Darwin, setting up a membership booth in the park and selling rally raffle tickets. Also a bigthank you goes to Joe and Patti Westphall for hosting the party and letting everyone camp at your house again. What a perfect way toend the Twine Ball event. A special Thank you goes to Jim Pease for planning and organizing everything for the Bike Run to the St. CloudVA. If you attended some or all of these events thank you for representing our chapter and for all your help, without you, we would not beable to do any of these things.

Don’t forget we changed our September meeting; it will be at the Rally on Saturday under the South Central tent at 6:00 pm. If you are at-tending the rally please consider working a few shifts to help out, they need help at front gate, security, raffle ticket sales, products, etc.Our chapter is growing but we are still second in the State. So remember when your out and about carry extra tri-folds with you to pro-mote A.B.A.T.E. of Minnesota. There are just too many things to list. So all I can suggest is take a look at the calendar of events and geton your bike, grab a friend and ride.

Check out our website listed above for Chapter minutes and to find out what we are doing as a Chapter or look us up on Facebook. Tofind out what else we will be doing plan on attending the next meeting and bring a friend or two along.

Till next month, Ride Safe and Ride Free!

Hello Rolling Prairie Members,

Jill Jose won 1 Free State Rally pass for selling the most State Rally raffle tickets with 35 books, way to go Jill!!! Runners upwere Paul Dog, Kari Karschnik, Mike Taylor, and "Me". Jill Jose also won 2 more free State Rally passes for recruiting or renewing themost members. The winners for the three remaining free State Rally passes were: Doug Byro, Nancy Ahern, and Kelly Lorenz. Then Bob"Tubby" Herman & Laurie Alt, owners of Minnesota Tubby's in Cobden, MN, kindly donated their sponsorship State Rally passes to bedrawn also, those winners are: Cory Lorenz, Doug Louris, Cody Fedder, Leroy Risk, Karen McLellan, and Connie Krause. If you aren'tnamed above, hit up Jill because if my math is correct, she has 2 extra passes, ha-ha! It's getting time for our Fallen Friends MemorialRun on September 10th at Buckshot's Bar in Butterfield. We have a great day planned starting at 12:00 pm with registration & lunch, which is included in the $10 fee for the run. We will leave at 1:00 pm for a 130-mile fun run. There will bea live auction and then Dark Horse Band will play the rest of the night. 100% of the proceeds will be donated to the Watonwan Countychapter of Beyond The Yellow Ribbon, which is an organization providing services to deployed troops, families and the soldier themselvesafter their deployment. RIVER VALLEYNext meetings:September 11th, Eagles Club, Mankato, 1:00 pmOctober 9th, Eagles Club, Mankato, 1:00 pm

Greetings,

As you read this, it is hard to believe that we are already into September. For those of you that made it to the State Rally, I hope you had agreat time, family commitments kept me home, but there is always next year. Is it just me, but did the riding season seem to be shorterthis year? It seems the older you get, the shorter the season gets. As you plan your fall runs, let’s see as a chapter we can get a group to-gether to support Rolling Prairie Fallen Friends Memorial Run on September 10th. They do a lot to support our Chapter's functions, letssupport thiers. As it gets closer to fall, remember to watch out for the deer as they move around. I just found out that a friend of mine, ScotBraun, was riding his bike and had a deer run into the side of the bike sending him and his rider into the ditch. The bike ended up withmost of the injuries and they ended up with bumps and bruises. They were lucky! It just goes to show how carefully you ride there is al-ways the unexpected. I have rattled enough.

As always, together we ride free. Steve

MISSISSIPPI VALLEYNext meeting:Sunday, September 18th, Crossroads Bar & Grill in Randolph, 9:30 am

As I'm writing this many Chapter members are at the Sturgis Motorcy-cle Rally and we hope that all of them have a great time and returnhome safely. Our Buddy Bear run was postponed in July due to the ex-treme temperatures on our meeting date so we'll try again after our Au-gust meeting and hope to be more successful. Weather permitting we'llalso have done a ditch cleanup in August.

Ride safe,

I hope everyone enjoyed Sturgis! Since I can't make another until my husband retires, I think of everyone who does make it every year!We made some changes at our last meeting. We are now alternating meetings between the Appleton and Madison VFW's. We backed upthis month's meeting one week. Because not everybody's gonna make it to the Rally and the meeting is at the Appleton VFW. So pleasenote the change. We had a pretty good turn out for August's meeting. Let's try to keep that up. For the past couple of years we have had aFall Fun Run and we'd like to have one again - this year on September 24th. Depending upon whether or not Butch can get off work. Wemay need a new Road Captain. We will also need a chase truck and trailer. Please let me know if you can help out and can make the run.We always have a different route, good stops and a great time. Be sure to check the calendar in this issue and support runs and eventsfor all the chapters you can get to. There are some great runs and events yet to come. The riding season is fast coming to an end, soeveryone who can - get out & ride!

Ride safe and be sure to watch out for those cages – ‘cause you know they don’t always watch out for us!

Hellooooo Flatlanders!

Wow September already? Where did the summer go! I hopeeveryone is having a great riding season, and made it to theState Rally, and got home safe. With summer winding down soare the events for the Flatlanders, so look in your Road Noiseand find a chapter that has events going on and help supportthem.

One event that our chapter had in August was the Write to Rideparty at Meghan and Ben’s house. Thanks guys for hosting thatparty. This was to help people to learn how to form your letter, toknow whom and how to send the letter. At the time of this writingthis event has not happened yet, so I hope lots of people showedup and got their letters off. Now, remember to send the repliesyou receive to Frank Ernst, Trustee of A.B.A.T.E. of Minnesota. Ilook forward to collecting the patches and rockers from Frank atthe B.O.D. in October.

Well it’s a beautiful early August evening and sitting behind a key-board on such a night should be a sin for a biker to do. So I willend my writing and get some wind in my face!

Upcoming events:Labor Day weekend, State Rally.September 24th Tri-County Fundraiser

The August meeting was held at Ron and Sue Ernst’s in Glencoe.11-12 people attended. Thanks to them for allowing the meetingto be held at their home! I was not able to attend, as my grand-kids are here from MI, and it’s all about them! So, this posting willbe short and sweet!

Discussion included the September 24th Tri-County Fundraiser. The ride will start at Cys Bar in Chaska. Please, all of you Tri-County members should try to attend! This money all goes backinto the chapter and it sure is a lot more fun when a lot of peopleare riding together! I also received a letter from the State, men-tioning that the Adopt A Highway can resume as normal! So ourhighway pick up will be scheduled in October sometime! I can'tbelieve I just said October, but there was no reschedule of this inour August meeting, so it will have to be sometime in October! Before the snow flies! (Wished I wouldn't have said that either)!Let’s see if we can increase our membership somewhat. Bring atri-fold to a friend’s house, purchase the first one for a biker friendfor his birthday or Christmas. Buy a membership for your bikerkids, etc. See what we can do!

LOWER CORNERNext meeting:Sunday, September 11th, Stupid Loon Roadside Saloon, Racine, 2:00 pm

Hello Lower Corners!

I hope everyone who went to Sturgis had a great time and no problems of any kind and made it home safe. At our August meeting weonly had officers show but that is normal for August so no real business was discussed. In September, we do need you to show up andparticipate because we have many issues facing A.B.A.T.E. this next year and the decisions we make now will show which directionA.B.A.T.E. will be going. As for me because of a change in my employment, we are looking for a new Chapter Rep. This is sad for me be-cause I truly enjoy the travel and meeting with all of the other Reps. Our September meeting will still be at the Stupid Loon Roadside Sa-loon but because of scheduling conflicts it will be on Sunday at 2:00 pm again. I hope everybody can make it! And as always ride free, ride safe

BIKER JOKE OF THE MONTH:Three Bikers, a Honda rider, a BMW rider, and a custom chopper rider were all sitting in a sauna. Suddenly, there was a continuingbeeping sound. The Honda rider pressed his forearm and the beeping stopped. The others looked at him questioningly...."That was mypager" he said, "I have a microchip under the skin of my arm." A few minutes later, a phone rang. The BMW rider lifted his palm to hisear. When he finished, he explained, "That was my mobile phone. I have a microchip in my hand!. “The chopper rider felt decidedly lowtech. Not to be outdone, he decided he had to do something just as impressive! He stepped out of the sauna, and went to the bath-room. He returned with a piece of toilet paper hanging from his butt. The others raised their eyebrows and stared at him. The chopperrider declared, “Well, will you look at that. I'm getting a fax."

OBAMA SIGNS LEAD LAW-EXEMPTION BILL FOR KIDS' OFF-HIGHWAY VEHICLESAUGUST 12, 2011

In a victory for families who enjoy responsible motorized recreation, President Barack Obama has signed into law a bill to allow the saleof kids' off-highway vehicles (OHVs) to continue, the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) reports.

On Aug. 12, Obama signed into law H.R. 2715, introduced by Reps. Mary Bono Mack (R-Calif.) and G.K. Butterfield (D-N.C.). Themeasure exempts kids' OHVs from the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) of 2008, known as the lead law.

The CPSIA, which went into effect on Feb. 10, 2009, banned the making, importing, distributing or selling of any product intended forchildren 12 and under, including kids' dirtbikes and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), that contained more than a specified amount of lead inany accessible part that might be ingested.

H.R. 2715 cleared the House by a 421-2 vote on Aug. 1 just before lawmakers went into their summer recess, and earned Senate ap-proval by unanimous consent the same day.

The new law is a victory that is the result of nearly three years of intensive efforts by the AMA and its partner organization, the All-TerrainVehicle Association (ATVA), their members and millions of advocates of responsible OHV recreation.

"Federal legislators deserve a lot of thanks for their tireless efforts, especially U.S. Rep. Denny Rehberg (R-Mont.), U.S. Sen. AmyKlobuchar (D-Minn.) and all the other lawmakers who supported an exemption," said AMA President and CEO Rob Dingman. "Hundredsof thousands of parents, kids and motorcycling club members responded to AMA calls for action to contact their elected officials andtheir efforts, along with all those volunteers who circulated petitions and took other actions, brought this issue to the attention of Con-gress and turned the tide in our favor.

Motorcycle Riders Foundation;!)!%-#-1& <)/)2')2-' 4/-) !% 42-)2!(:5(/1#'2' A number of inaccuracies and inconsistencies have been uncovered in examining data related to motorcyclecrashes, injuries and fatalities. If the information is incorrect it can only lead to theories and conclusions that are also incor-rect or, at the very least, suspect.

<!1,)2!( Since much of the data is obviously flawed and most of the conclusions are therefore speculative at best, theonly true solutions to motorcycle safety are proactive measures which prevent a collision from occurring at all rather thanreactive steps that may offer some level of injury mitigation only after a crash has already taken place. Rider educationthat prepares the motorcyclist to interact with other roadway users by learning and practicing the skills necessary forhazard avoidance and developing a strategy to deal with real world traffic is the primary component of a comprehensivemotorcycle safety plan. Additionally, educating all motor vehicle operators to be alert and free of impairment as theyshare the road with others is critical in deterring crashes caused by inattention.

6%/2(2(= /(+ 5>/%&(&'' /%& )?& @&#'A

!""#$%& ())!)"*When errors, omissions or inaccuracies are discovered in reports or statistics, it calls into ques-tion the integrity of results. Additionally, small numbers can be easily skewed by slight or seemingly insignificant variations.Furthermore, numbers may be exploited if uncharacteristic highs or lows are used as a baseline. None of these discoveriesare intended to argue against helmet use, but rather to demonstrate that suggesting a helmet law is not the solution tomotorcycle safety. Individual states need to maintain the ability to determine what measures best address the needs anddesires of their residents as suggested in the National Agenda for Motorcycle Safety (NAMS)

+,-. Comparison of studies is complicated due to varying criteria, wherein one report references riders, it is unclearif that includes passengers or specifically operators. Other papers may refer to the numbers of persons, crashes or vehiclesintermittently. This can be quite confusing as the numbers are usually very close and are frequently compared in error.

+,-. A Minnesota motorcyclist survived a crash only to be struck by a car while standing on the road attempting toflag down a motorist for assistance. This was subsequently counted as a motorcycle fatality.

+,-. A Pennsylvania taxi driver, with multiple suspensions, was responsible for about two percent of the state’s totalmotorcycle fatalities when he caused a crash with three motorcycles and killed five helmeted riders in a single incident.

+,-. Motorcycle fatalities dropped by 10% in 2009 and preliminary reports indicate that 2010 numbers will be furtherreduced by at least 2%.The Motorcycle Industry Council advises that sales of replacement tires were up by 6.1% in 2010,suggesting an increase in motorcycle usage. A decrease in fatalities despite an increase in exposure would suggest thatmotorcycle safety and awareness programs, specifically rider education courses, have been successful.

+,-. The National Transportation Safety Board has investigated over 120,000 airplane incidents, over 60,000 surface trans-portation incidents, and just 6 individual motorcycle incidents in their entire 44 year history — Apparently enoughinvestigation to warrant adding mandatory helmet laws for motorcyclists on their “top ten most wanted list”.

+,-. According to preliminary data from the Governors Highway Safety Association, states that have a mandatory adulthelmet law had six fewer fatalities in 2010 than in 2009, while free choice states saw a reduction of 74. The state with thesingle largest decline in fatalities (Texas -60) is a choice state and a state which requires helmets on all riders tied forthe greatest increase (New York +24).

+,-. FARS continues to include “mopeds” in motorcycle crash statistics despite the fact that most states do notrequire registration of these vehicles. This practice skews the most respected method of measuring the effectiveness ofmotorcycle safety programs, which is the ratio of accidents, injuries and fatalities per 10,000 registrations.

OBAMA SIGNS LEAD LAW-EXEMPTION BILL FOR KIDS' OFF-HIGHWAY VEHICLESAUGUST 12, 2011

"I'm sure that those letters, emails and telephone calls to Congress had a major impact in convincing lawmakers to exempt OHVs fromthe lead law," Dingman said. "I'm also convinced that the AMA Family Capitol Hill Climb held on May 26 played a major role, since it puta human face on the issue by showing lawmakers the kids and families who are suffering because of the CPSIA.

"I want to thank Racer X magazine, Doublin Gap Motocross Park, Mason Dixon Riding Association 6 and 7, Tomahawk MX Park, theMiddle Atlantic Motocross Association, Budds Creek Motocross Park, High Point Raceway, and advocates such as the Yentzer familyand Moto-Patriot Nancy Sabater, who brought youngsters to Washington, D.C., for the AMA Family Capitol Hill Climb to lobby their law-makers," he said.

Dingman also thanked other organizations and individuals that worked diligently on the effort, including the Motorcycle Industry Counciland Specialty Vehicle Institute of America, which represent the motorcycle and ATV industries; the motorcycle enthusiast and trademedia; Sean Hilbert, president of Cobra Motorcycles, which makes kids' dirtbikes; the Coombs family and Tim Cotter of MX Sports, which has conducted the famed AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship featuring thousands of promising young riders for thepast 30 years, and Kirk "Hardtail" Willard, president of the Motorcycle Riders Foundation.

"I want to extend a very special thanks to Malcolm Smith, a member of the Motorcycle Hall of Fame, who brought a lot of attention to theunfairness of the lead law when he hosted a media event at Malcolm Smith Motorsports and sold some youth OHVs as a symbolic ges-ture to protest the law," Dingman said.

The AMA has been at the forefront of the fight to exclude child-sized motorcycles and ATVs from the CPSIA since early 2009. The asso-ciation has participated in news events to focus media attention on the issue, lobbied on Capitol Hill, and organized campaigns to en-courage riders and parents to contact their federal lawmakers and key decision-makers to exempt kids' OHVs from the CPSIA.

As a result, every single member of Congress, as well as members of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), has receivedpowerful statements from members of the AMA and ATVA.

The AMA magnified these efforts through its "Kids Just Want to Ride" campaign. To read more of what the AMA has done in its efforts toexempt kids' OHVs from the CPSIA, go to http://www.americanmotorcyclist.com/Rights/KeepKidMotorcyclesAndATVsLega....

Aimed at children's toys, the CPSIA ensnared kids' dirtbikes and ATVs because trace levels of lead can be found in parts such as batter-ies and brake calipers. Other children's products were also affected by the CPSIA, such as books, clothes and microscopes.

The CPSC, which is responsible for implementing the CPSIA, delayed enforcement of certain parts of the law until the end of this year, granting a reprieve for child-sized dirtbikes and ATVs. That gave those concerned about the law time to change it before the reprieveended.

OF NEVER HEARING YOUR PRECIOUS VOICE,IT SEEMS THAT IN LIFE THERE ARE CERTAIN TIMES

WHICH ARE MORE THAN "SIMPLY UNFAIR"WHEN OUR HEARTS SEARCH FOR BETTER ANSWERS

BUT CANNOT SEEM TO FIND THEM THERE

AND SUCH IS THE CASE AT YOUR PASSING

CONTEMPLATING THE BRIEFNESS OF YOUR LIFE.ALL THE GREAT THINGS THAT YOU STILL WOULD HAVE DONEIF YOU'D BEEN GRANTED A LITTLE MORE TIME.IT ISN'T DIFFICULT TO ENVISION THE POSSIBILITIES.FOR LOOK AT WHAT YOU'D ALREADY DONE,THE DIFFERENCE YOU HAD MADE IN SO MANY LIVES.IN ALL THAT YOU HAD BECOME

PERHAPS YOU WERE SIMPLY TOO GOOD FOR THIS LIFE

SO GOD CALLED YOU BACK TO HEAVEN.

THAT YOUR LIFE NEEDED NO FURTHER TESTAMENT

THAN THE GOODNESS YOU HAD ALREADY GIVEN.BUT REGARDLESS OF THE REASON

FOR WHY SO SOON YOU HAD TO PART,WE WILL MISS YOU EVERY SINGLE DAY OF OUR LIVES

FOR YOU WERE THE PRIDE OF OUR HEARTS!THANK YOU FOR BEING OUR EXAMPLE

INSPIRING US THROUGH YOUR COURAGE AND DRIVE

WE'LL CHERISH ALL THE PRECIOUS MEMORIES

THAT YOU LOVINGLY CREATED IN OUR LIVES

FOR TRULY YOUR LIFE REFLECTED

A WISDOM THAT FEW, SO YOUNG, CAN SEE..."
