From the Principal

Another busy term commences with the Year 12 students completing their secondary education. On Friday students and staff participated in the Year 12 Breakfast cooked by Mrs Sandy Boxall‘s team in Kennedy Hall at Kobeelya. Light hearted awards were exchanged between students and teachers after a scrumptious cooked breakfast.

The day proceeded with Leavers Talks from Snr Sargent Simon Underwood Katanning Police, TAFE Regional Manager Rachael Russell and School Nurse Sharon Muir and her student nurse Karly Durack. These talks reinforced the need for students to make good choices throughout Leavers Week and keep safe and well. Too often at this time of the year young people can make silly decisions that have life changing consequences. At the end of the day the final Year 12 Assembly took place with much frivolity, noise and mess which is traditionally tidied up by the Year 11 students. It was terrific to have so many parents and family members attend this light hearted event.

Student Excellence awarded at Valediction

The Valediction was held at Kennedy Hall on Thursday evening and was an opportunity to present graduation certificates, subject awards and special awards celebrating student achievement in Year 12. This year our students completed ATAR courses, Certificate II courses and Work Place Learning to meet the requirements of the WA Certificate of Education. Congratulations to the Best and Brightest Rotary Dux of 2016 Stephen Paini, who completed an academic course in Mathematics Methods, Chemistry, Physics, English and Geography with the goal of studying Engineering at UWA. The Excellent Course Achievement – ATAR Award receipient was Nick Lay and the Best and Brightest Vocational Education and Training Award was won by Olivia Sugg. Congratulations to all of our award winners for 2016. A full list of awards and recipients will be the feature in our next Newsletter.

Your Feedback is Important to Us

If you have provided the school with an email address you will receive the School Survey for 2016 electronically in the week beginning Monday 7 November. The survey will stay open until Monday 21 November. If you do not have an email address your Survey will arrive in the mail. The Survey is an opportunity to provide the school with feedback to assist in our overall improvement. We value your contribution and appreciate you taking 5 minutes to complete the Survey. Translators are available to assist those parents and guardians who do not have English as a first language.

Katanning Senior High School Vision—Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Leadership

Did you see our student work at the 125th Katanning Show? Once again the Katanning Show served as an opportunity for our students and staff to display their talents in a wide range of categories from photography to cake baking and growing of fruit and vegetables. This year our school had two displays – a general display of student work in the Leisure centre foyer and the Cert II Engineering display in the main hall. Congratulations to all of our students and staff who won awards.

Head Boy & Head Girl 2017 The election for Head Boy and Head Girl for 2017 took place at the end of Term 3, with five Year 11 Students nominating for the roles. All nominees wrote a speech which was presented to staff and students. Congratulations to Makaela Knapp who was elected Head Girl and Jayden Severin who was elected Head Boy. Student Leaders Participate in Road Wise Regional Youth Forum

On Monday 24 October our Student Leaders welcomed young leaders from Narrogin Senior High School, Narrogin School of Agriculture and Wagin District High Schools to a Road Safety Forum organised by Mrs Ann Rintoul - Consultant for SDERA. This event was support by Mr Kim Papilia the Commissioner for Road Safety, Member for Wagin the Hon Tuck Waldron MLA and Mr Peter Rundle. The aim of this forum

was to educate young leaders in regards to our collective responsibilities when driving on our roads and to highlight the impact of poor decisions when driving. As many of you are aware the Wheatbelt region has the highest number of road fatalities in the state. Teaching young people the importance of the decisions that they make well before they gain their drivers licence is one way to change behaviour on our roads. Our young leaders were the host for students from surrounding schools. Clontarf Academy student Rhys Johnston-Diack opened the forum with Acknowledgement of Country in Noongar followed by Head Girl for 2017 Makaela Knapp formally welcoming special guests and invited students.

Would you like to support our students?

Next Wednesday 2 November we hold our annual Inter-House Athletics Carnival at Quartermaine Oval. If you would like to join us on the day put on your old House colours or your child‘s House colour and come down to the oval at 9.00am. If you are also keen to assist with the event contact the Physical Education Learning Area. Shelters will be put up and refreshments will be available for purchase at the Sprig bar??? Senior High School Staff contribute to the population of Katanning! Some of our staff have been busy this year creating the next generation. Congratulations to HPE Teacher in Charge Mr Graham Treloar and his wife Pip on the birth of their first child Millicent Roberta on Friday 21 October 2016. Congratulations also to Senior School Program Coordinator Mr Frank Gaudin and his wife Sumarie on the birth of their first child Francis Andrew and our HASS Teacher Mrs Megan Nenke and her husband Ian on the birth of her first child Indiana Francis, both born on Wednesday 26 October 2016. We wish the happy parents all the best. We look forward to another birth before the year ends with Mrs Caitlyn Fitzgerald expecting her third child.

How can you support your child’s performance at school?

At Katanning Senior High School your child may attend homework club each Tuesday and Thursday from 3.30pm to 4.30pm in the School Library. A range of our teachers are available to provide additional support with homework and assignments. Students have access to computers for school work and are also able to use the other resources available in the library. Attending HW club each week enables students to seek further assistance with what is expected in assignments and how to improve their work to gain the best results. Light refreshments are available and usually include Milo in the winter and fruit in the summer.

Other children may gain increased confidence and skills by joining Bush Rangers which runs after school on Wednesday after school from 3.30pm to 5.30pm. Miss Watson and her team run a range of activities which may include working with Landcare and participating in weekend camps. The skills developed in Bush Rangers may support improved performance in a range of subjects whilst also developing independence, skills and leadership skills.

Inclusive Learning received funding from More Support for Students with Disabilities Development Grants (MSSD) for three additional raised garden beds. We have been busy planting out the beds with various vegetables and herbs. The students wrote a list of everything they would like to plant, each choosing something different. They prepared the garden beds at the end of last term, filling them with a layer of straw topped with a mix of soil and sheep manure. Everyone enjoyed some sunshine (finally!) while planting the seedlings and seeds. The students will be responsible for looking after the plants, keeping them watered and weeded. We are all looking forward to harvesting and eating our produce, both fresh and in our cooking. A big thank you to Katanning H-Hardware for delivering the garden beds and soil, Rod Bushell from Katanning Sale Yards, for donating the sheep manure and to KD‘s Garden Centre for helping us out with plants and pea straw. TRANSTION and ORIENTATION PROGRAM

for current 2016 Year 6 students

(entering Katanning Senior High School as Year 7 in 2017)

Over many years Katanning Senior High School, in conjunction with our nearby Primary Schools, has run a successful transition program for primary school students entering the High School in the following year. In 2016, the Transition Program will take place in Term Four. The transition program has a number of goals. These include increasing the students‘ knowledge of the High School, making the students more comfortable in the environment and exposing the students to aspects of the Year 7 curriculum plus providing our teachers with the opportunity to both teach and get to know the students. It is intended that this will provide your child with a positive introduction to Katanning Senior High School. During the Transition Program students will be rotated through various the subject areas of Information Technology, Manual Arts, Home Economics and Arts. Importantly, this year students will also have classes with our English, Mathematics, Science and HASS teachers. A daily timetable will be provided. The days and dates of the Transition Program and Orientation Day are as follows.

The Student Orientation Day will occur on Wednesday 30 November 2016. On this day students from the surrounding Primary Schools come together as a year group. All year 6 students are to make their own way to Katanning Senior High School and will participate in classes taught by our teachers across the day. Students begin the day at 8.50am and will be dismissed by the High School at 3.25pm and will be free to make their own way home. The Parent Orientation Session will be held on Wednesday 30 November 2016 in the school library. An invitation will be sent to parents who have enrolled their child for 2017. The session begins at 9.15am meeting the administration and Student Services Team, then taking a tour of the school. A morning tea with staff is provided at 10.45am. We welcome all parents and guardians and look forward to meeting with you at this important time in your child‘s life. Mr Robin Dark Middle School Program Coordinator

ENGLISH

Shakespeare Incursion Towards the end of Term 3 we had an in-school performance called Shakespeare As You Write It

which students in the 7.1, 8.1, 9.1, 10.1, ATAR 11 and ATAR 12 English classes attended. We were unsure exactly what to expect as it was an ‗impromptu‘ performance. One would imagine that having no script and about 90 teenage students to perform for would be a daunting task (there is not enough money in the world for us to do it!!), however the three young performers were able to endorse the crowd‘s ideas and had students (and teachers) in fits of laughter. They were fantastic!

Students were allowed to make suggestions, so the performance turned into a Shakespearean version of the popular kids movie Finding Nemo but set in Ancient Rome. English teachers especially were wondering how they were going to pull it off, but they did! With many costume changes and incredibly quick thinking we were soon watching ‗Doria‘ and ‗Merlin‘ hunt for the elusive child. The performers touched on many literary terms such as similes, metaphors, iambic pentameter (a particular rhythm that Shakespeare liked to use), soliloquies and monologues.

We have pencilled in a performance for 2017, which we believe will be based on The Great Gatsby, and is a text that we use in our ATAR

English classes. Knowing what the performance will be like and using resources provided by Australian Playhouse, we will be able to prepare students so that they get maximum benefit from attending.

English would like to thank the Australian Playhouse actors who attended our school and the Katanning Senior High School P&C for making the performance possible by donating half of the money required to host the performance. We are very grateful.

Katanning Students and Teachers Shine at the Katanning

Show This year Katanning Agricultural Show attracted a huge number of entries from students in the Arts & Photography, Home Economics and Technology learning areas. In the Visual arts and Photography sections 24 students won awards, and in Home Economics 8 awards were won by students from Years 8 through to Year 10. Two of the awards in the Visual Art and Photography sections were for Outstanding Exhibits.

Photography teacher Mrs Witham said that the students get a real thrill from showcasing their work at the local level. As well as the Visual Arts, Photography and Home Economics Learning area entries, many students showed community spirit and involvement by entering a number of categories independently. Home Economics teachers Sushila Malik and Louise Van Niekerk showed that they have some very diverse skills. Sushila won 6 1st prizes in the craft sections and Louise took out a 1st for her Landscape in Acrylic.

We have had some positive feedback by members of the wider community on our school display, this incorporated photos from the various learning areas as well as news articles, the International Women‘s Day banner printed and made by Year 12 student Emma Smart, and the Quilt created to raise funds for the Royal Flying Doctors Service from the Home Economics department. A variety of work samples was displayed from the different learning areas this included some wonderful stories from Year 7 students, Photography files from the Certificate II Course of Study, HASS posters and English in class samples. A variety of information such as the Work Place Learning Program enabled visitors and the community to see what Katanning Senior High School has to offer. The Certificate II Engineering students display was considered by many to be outstanding. Teacher Luther McPhee has set a high standard for the work completed by these students within the Trade Skills Centre. Melanie-Jane LeGuin T.I.C Visual Arts Learning Community Leader -Relationships

The WA Academy

So the first day the Spring sun decided to really shine in Katanning I thought I would take some students elsewhere! Although for a change we didn‘t go where it was colder. Myself and Miss D packed the car and took Kei-Leigh and Casey up to Perth for a lovely day of basking in 33 degree weather! We enjoyed a leisurely drive up to Perth enjoying the talents of Miss D‘Souza‘s singing and little of Kei-Leigh‘s snoring and arrived just before lunch. After a few wrong turns the girls then had to witness my anxiety levels go through the roof when I had to park the car. Despite my lack of parking skills we managed to find a space on the top level of the car park. To take us back to our happy places we thought we‘d enjoy the sights of King Street, taking a look at Louis Vuitton, Kookai and of course Tiffany & Co. After enjoying a little window shopping, we headed for our first stop- Jamie‘s Italian on Wellington Street. There was no holding back with plenty of bruschetta, pasta, and brownies enjoyed by all! After lunch, full to the brim, we headed to Bentley to the WA Academy: Hair, Beauty, Make-up, Nails and Business. Here the girls got to enjoy 2 hours of a personalised make up course with lecturer Zanthee. Zanthee took girls through things like selecting the right foundation shade, how to apply various cosmetics and make up techniques like contouring and Smokey eyes. She applied make up to both of the girls whilst taking them through the step by step processes, doing a classic look for Kei-Leigh and a bolder more dramatic look for Casey. They girls learned about everything from filling in eyebrows to brush techniques. Much to Zanthee‘s disgust I think Miss D and I learned even more than the girls did! An exciting bonus for the girls was that after the session they even got to take home some nice Napoleon Perdis products for themselves.

It was a great insight for both the girls, especially Kei-Leigh who plans to study beauty after year 12. Mrs Caitlyn Fitzgerald Program Coordinator Follow the Dream: Partnerships for Success

CLONTARF FOUNDATION KATANNING FOOTBALL ACADEMY

On Wednesday the 14th of September, the Katanning Maalis boys joined up with the Albany Academy for the end of year senior trip to Melbourne. The boys had to and maintain 90% plus attendance, good behaviour and grades to earn a place on the trip. It all started with the long drive to Perth straight after school. Once we arrived, we headed straight to Sizzler for a bite to eat and then met up with the Albany Academy at the airport. The boys were so excited and full of energy to get the trip underway. I don‘t think any of them slept on the plane ride across to the other side of Australia.

We landed in Melbourne at 7am and headed to the YHA North Melbourne to settle in. This gave the boys a bit of time to have breakfast and shower before the day‘s events. Firstly, we headed to Hawthorn Football Clubs training session and the boys got to meet with some of the players and even get photos and autographs. Then they ventured to the MCG for a tour around the ground. By this time the boys were feeling a bit hungry so we headed back to the accommodation for some lunch and a sleep.

The next morning after a good night sleep we travelled down to Lamborghini for a work site tour. The tour consisted of the show room floor where the boys got to hear one of the new cars start up and the rest of the visit was out the back in the mechanics area. We then headed down to Ferrari to have a look at the cars in their show room. By this time it was lunch and then up to the top of the Eureka Tower for a look at the Melbourne CBD and surrounding from 88 floors high. Once we got back to the YHA we had 30 minutes to get ready to head to the MCG for the Footy game between the Hawks and the Bulldogs. The boys loved the game and the atmosphere around the ground was electric with the 87,823 people yelling and screaming for their teams.

In the morning we travelled down to the Yarra River for a cruise, the boys took it in and loved every minute of it. It was then time for a bit of shopping at the Queen Victoria Markets. That night we stayed in and watched the Swans v Crows game and got an early night so we were ready for the big day ahead of us at the Royal Melbourne Show. The next morning we drove to the Show for a few hours, once we entered the grounds we told the boys where we were going to meet and at what time. They then all headed straight for the rides. Two of the boys had no fear going on all the high dropping and fast moving rides. It was a great day out for the boys and once again it was time for dinner for one of the Albany‘s boys 18th birthdays. Once we got back to the accommodation it was lights out as the next day was going to be another big one. In the morning we left about 8am and drove to Geelong. We stopped off at Skilled Stadium, Geelong Cats home ground and had a look around. The boys went on to the oval and got a photo and had a look in the Geelong museum under the grandstand. We then travelled up to Bells Beach for a look then to see the light house from the show ―Around the Twist‖. We had some lunch on the beach and a kick of the footy before the drive back to Melbourne CBD. That night we went back to La Porchetta for dinner for some pizza and pasta and then packed up our rooms for the next day. We left the YHA at 6am to get to the airport on time. Once we had checked in and were on the plane and ready to come home, there was a security breach at the airport so we were delayed for an hour until we were all cleared. Finally, we landed in Perth, but it was straight back to Katanning for some rest before the next day at school.

Top tips for parents of year 12s attending Leavers’

Leavers 2016 starts on Monday 21 November and whilst it can be a really exciting time for young people to celebrate finishing high school, a study has found almost 9 out of 10 leavers reported at least one negative consequence due to alcohol or other drug use. There are many things parents can do to ensure their children are safe during Leavers‘ celebrations. Here are our top tips regarding alcohol use: Avoid providing alcohol to your children; Educate your child – Inform them of the harms

associated with drinking alcohol; Clarify your expectations – Talk to your child

about what your expectations are of them regarding alcohol; and

Talk with other parents – Let them know you don‘t want your child provided with alcohol.

New secondary supply laws, which have been in place since 20 November 2015, support parents‘ decision not to supply alcohol to their child. Under this law, it is an offence for anyone to supply under 18s with alcohol in a private setting without parental or guardian permission. This offence carries a penalty of up to $10,000. Secondary supply laws apply not only to parents but also to friends aged over 18 years who are considering supplying alcohol to their peers who are under 18 years of age without parent consent. We all want to see our children reach their full potential. No one should supply alcohol to under 18s. For support or more information regarding young people and alcohol, particularly regarding Leavers‘ celebrations, see www.alcoholthinkagain.com.au.
