Pressure & temperature operatinglimits:Temperature:Typical design temperature range is300°C - 550°C (1,000°F).Design temperature as high as 650°C(1,200°F) has been achieved.Note: internal bellows compensate forthermal differential expansion.
Description:Alfa Laval Packinox combinedfeed/effluent plate heat exchangerscomprise a welded bundle block and apressure vessel.
Heat transfer takes place exclusivelywithin the bundle block so that noprocess fluids circulate inside the shell.The pressure vessel is filled with higherpressure fluid for compression of thebundle block. Bundle plates areexposed only to the differential pressureof the flowing fluids; thus Alfa LavalPackinox heat exchangers operatesafety even in high pressureapplications.
Installation:In general, Alfa Laval Packinox heatexchangers are installed in an uprightposition (the pressure vessel is fittedwith a skirt or brackets) within minimalfootprint.
Current size range:Shell diameter: 1 m to 6 m (3 to 18ft.)Shell total length: 10 m to 20 m (30 to65 ft.) Total weight: 30 to 300 metrictons (60,000 lb. to 600,000 lb.)Equivalent S&T surface area: 1 000 to27 000 m2 (11,000 to 297,000 sq. ft.) ina single shell.
Construction materials:Bundle: Stainless steel (SS 321, SS 316,SS 304, etc.) and carbon steel. Qualifiedconstruction materials include all typesof austenitic stainless steel in addition totitanium and highly corrosion resistant 6Mo austenitic SS Vessel: 1.25 Cr - 0.5Mo, 2.25 Cr - 1.0 Mo, stainless steel,carbon steel or other as per customerrequirements Bellows: Inconel, Incoloyor other, subject to demand.
Pressure:The pressure vessel is designed towithstand operating pressure; designpressure is no obstacle for Alfa LavalPackinox heat exchangers.Our reference list includes exchangerswith design pressure ranging from3 bar to 120 bar.Differential pressure between feed andeffluent is the bundle’s only mechanicallimitation. As a conservative measure,we currently limit this value to 40 bar.

Ziepack heat exchangersZiepack compact in-columncondensers, stab-in reboilers and gas-gas heat exchangers are designed forhigh condensation or evaporation dutyprimarily in the petrochemicals industry.
The construction of Ziepack platebundles combines plate and weldingtechnology with “hydroforming”, the useof high pressure water to shape plates.“Double-plate channels” for the processcooling or heating medium arehydroformed between the welds of twolaser-welded stainless steel plates.
This section presents alternativemechanical designs that have beensuccessfully applied in specificprocesses.
The fundamentals of Alfa LavalPackinox heat exchangers (materials,surface area, thermal and hydraulicefficiency, pressure constraints,dimensions, etc.) remain unchanged,but the designs are adapted to processconditions in the interest of providingthe best technical and cost-effectivesolution.
Process fluid boils or condenses in“interplate channels”, i.e. the passagesbetween two sets of double-platechannels.
Their unique design makes Ziepackheat exchangers ideal where lowpressure drop and compactness areessential, particularly in vacuumdistillation columns. For revamps,Ziepack presents the added advantagesof fitting available column space andaccommodating existing equipment.

The plates are then stacked on theworld’s largest bundle welding presswhere automated TIG welds areperformed.
Operators manually weld header boxesto the bundle.
All materials and processes used in thefabrication of Alfa Laval Packinox heatexchangers must meet rigorous qualityrequirements. Thorough inspection isperformed at each step of fabrication.
After passing a series of inspections,the plate bundle is inserted into apressure vessel. Additional checks arecarried out, and the heat exchanger isprepared for transport.
Manufacturing processes are managedby the Production, Engineering andDesign Departments and supported bya specialized Quality Control, Inspectionand Assurance system. Alfa LavalPackinox holds certificatesdemonstrating conformity with ISO9000, ASME, National Board and othermajor standards.
Explosion forming of plates and platebundle assembly are carried out atAlfa Laval Packinox’s purpose-builtfacilities at Chalon-sur-Saône inBurgundy, France.
Tens of thousand of stainless steelplates up to 2m wide, in lengthsreaching 15m, have been explosionformed underwater since Alfa LavalPackinox first developed thistechnology.
The plates’ distinctive chevron-shapedcorrugations make Alfa Laval Packinoxheat exchangers highly efficient staticmixers, providing optimum heat transferfor two-phase flow.
The hundreds of plates used to build asingle Alfa Laval Packinox are preparedfor welding. Inlet/outlet inserts areadded to ensure low pressure drop bydistributing fluids over minimum spaceduring operation.
