Community Input
There are two important opportunities coming up in which all community mem-
bers have an opportunity to have some direct input into the future direction of
both Bowraville Central School and Public Education in NSW.
As a school, we are currently going through a very rigorous self-evaluation proc-
ess to assist our forward planning and future target setting. This is a very impor-
tant exercise every year, but especially so now as from 2012 through to 2015 we
will benefit from extra resourcing as part of the Federal Government’s National
Partnerships Program. There has already been an opportunity for parents and
community members to complete a pen and paper survey in relation to this, and
over the next two weeks we will be making random phone calls to families to
gain further information and opinions. There will also be an opportunity to com-
plete a survey online (see information in this newsletter). We look forward to
your assistance and honest feedback.
Some weeks ago now the NSW Minister for Education announced a proposed
extensive change to the way the Public School system may function in our state.
At last week’s P&C meeting I introduced the document, ‘Local Schools, Local
Decisions’. In essence, the proposal’s intent is to enable schools and their com-
munities to have a much greater say in the operation of the school. The changes
being discussed are very significant, including staffing, maintenance, and salaries.
A consultation workshop is being held for this area on Tuesday 8th November
from 4-6pm at William Bayldon Public School, Toormina. It would be great to
see as many people as possible attend from BCS. Please do not hesitate to contact
me for more information.
Finally, many thanks to all involved in what I believe was a terrific Year 8 camp
last week up to Gibralta. To Mr Symonds, Ms Raynor, Di Flanders, and Mr Ib-
bott, many thanks for providing this great learning opportunity. Well done to all
students for taking on the challenge!
Have a great week

Sport and Recreation’s Swim and Survive starting soon
Australian summers usually involve plenty of fun in and around the water, but
no parent can forget how important it is to make sure children stay safe. Sport
and Recreation’s Swim and Survive classes for preschoolers and school-aged
children help youngsters learn important ways to be safe and enjoy our pools,
rivers, beaches and lakes. The intensive nine-day programs give wonderful re-
sults, and are great fun as well! Plus, family discounts make our program afford-
able for all the children in the family. Sport and Recreation runs Swim and Sur-
vive classes in pools throughout regional NSW, including somewhere near you.
Our instructors are nationally qualified and screened for their suitability to work
with children. Prices for nine lessons are $61 for school-aged children and $45
for preschoolers (prices exclude pool entry fee). For further information or to
make a booking , phone 131302 or visit www.dsr.nsw.gov.au

Year 2/3O—Diprotodon Research
The mega fauna visitor came to BCS this week and Year 2/3O have painted an
image of ‘Diprotodon’ on the cement in Area 2. Prior to this, each student drew
a map of where we wanted to paint the diprotodon and an image to show Mr
McFarlane what we planned to do. Each student wrote Mr McFarlane a
‘persuasive letter’ telling him how good an image of a Diprotodon would look
in our playground. It would make the playground really amazing.
Di O’Donnell
Today 2/3O painted a Diprotodon
near Mr Rushton’s office in Area
2. I helped draw the lines on the
cement. My class painted the
Diprotodon red.
By Ronan Singleton (19.10.11)
Today our class drew and painted
a Diprotondon on the cement out-
side. It is a mega fauna. It was 2D
shape. We painted it red.

Bowraville Playgroup
Bowraville Playgroup has recently relocated to Bowraville Central School. The
group thanked Principal Malcolm McFarlane and staff for working to set up the
playgroup in the school grounds, as well as Lynden Briggs and his Year 11 Con-
struction class for their work constructing a slab and shed to house all of the
playgroup’s equipment. The group has recently received a grant and used the
funds to purchase many new toys and equipment to enrich and stimulate the
children of the community in their early childhood years. Anyone in the com-
munity is invited to take advantage of this gift, so if you have children between
the age of 0-5 years, the group would love you to come and visit and experience
playgroup yourself. Your children can have fun and meet new friends, join in
some activities such as bread making, painting, craft and Play dough or perhaps
play in the sandpit. Playgroup also provides parents and carers with an opportu-
nity to meet other parents, make friends and share experiences and ideas in re-
laxed and friendly environment. The group meets at Bowraville Central School,
Bridges Room, High Street Bowraville each Thursday at 9.30am. For enquiries
please contact the school on 65647162.
THE GLOBAL EXPERIENCE – LIVE IT AT HOME HOST FAMILY OPPORTUNITIES IN 2012
In January 2012 we will be receiving exchange students from Japan, Europe, the USA and Latin America. Our new arrivals will live with a host family and attend a local school for 2-10 months. As we plan for their arrival, we are keen to hear from suitable families located in NSW who might be interested to host a student. Host families come in all shapes and sizes, backgrounds and ages. To this end, we would again be grateful if you would place a notice in your newsletter/bulletin or men-tion it on your website. You can download the newsletter notice here in Word format, as a JPG-PAGE 1 / JPG-PAGE 2 or in PDF format. All students have at least basic levels of English, would attend a school in your local area and live the life of a local. Our group of students cover a wide variety of interests and hobbies. If you would like to pro-vide your students, parents or language teachers with further information on our in-bound students you can also download some student profiles in PDF Format. This is just a small sample of all the students who will be arriving. Our staff members will be happy to discuss which student might be best suited to a family.

The 2012 School year for Kindergarten students at Bowraville Central will com-
mence on Thursday 2nd February 2012 (Best Start Assessments will take place
on Monday 30th and Tuesday 31st of January).
Year 8 Camp—Gibraltar Range—By Rebecca Barber
Day 1: Tuesday at 9.32, Year 8 student s, Diana, Miss Rayner , Mr Ibbottt, Mr Sy-
monds & Mr Barber left the school and headed to Gibraltar Range. We stopped at Graf-
ton for some snacks, we left Grafton and drove for 2 hours and had some more snacks
and a look at the main river . We left that spot and drove up and down mountains until
we reached Gibraltar Range. We all unloaded the bus and set up camp then Adrienne
and Selina helped Diana and Miss Rayner cook dinner, while everyone else went for a
bushwalk. When we came back from the bushwalk, we started a fire that we all sat
around eating salad, bread with butter and Kebabs. As soon as it got dark we all went to
play spotlight till 10pm, then we all went back to camp to get ready for bed. We all kept
the teachers up until after 11pm since it was the first night.
Day 2: We were all up by 7.30am eating breakfast around the fire. We had at least an
hour and a bit to get ready for another bush walk. We were meant to be absailing but
because we kept the teachers up most of the night it got moved to the next day. Every-
one was in the bus ready to go to the start of the walk, but we couldn't find it at first so
we had to drive around in circles, finally we started the walk it was lovely and an easy
walk. We got to see red cedar trees and a little dam. We got more water from a swim-
ming hole with 2 waterfalls, the water was cool and refreshing, then we got more fire-
wood for the rest of the day. We stayed at camp then for dinner we had damper and spa-
ghetti bolognaise. When it got dark we all ran back down to the hut to play spotlight and
murder in the dark, but not for long since everyone was so tired from the night before,
so it was an early night.
Day 3: It was an early start on Thursday and the boys & girls got split up for the absail-
ing. Jyden, Max Winslow and Nesta got to go with Mr Ibbott and set up the absailing
site. While the rest of us got ready, the boys got to go on their bush walk. While the girls
did absailing. When Jyden, Max and Nesta were walking back from the absailing site
they walked over 2 brown snakes that made Diana think twice about going absailing. So
Mr Barber had to walk us girls to the absailing site. All of us girls had a stick ready to
hit a snake on the head, so it was nice walk. When we got the to the rock that had been
Continue page 8

up for absailing, we got a practice go on a 5 metre rock which was good fun. Selina
went first then Zara, Adrienne and Rebecca, but Adrianne and Rebecca got 2 turns then
it was on to the real one, which was cool. The boys had rreal good fun on their walk and
everyone got back together for lunch at camp around 1pm. We had sandwiches. Then it
was the boys turn to go absailing, but the girls didn't go on their walk, instead the 4 girls
and Liam went to the platypus picnic area for 20 minutes, then we went back to camp,
we got firewood, played with the frisbee and vortex after the frisbee got stuck in a tree
and the vortex in the cooking fire. We just sat around the fire playing cards, laughing
until it was time to go pick up the boys. That night it was sausages and pizza for dinner,
Bryce cooked the sausages and the pizza oven got set up. The rest of Year 8 sat around
the fire laughing, playing cards and talking but in a bit of chaos Liam found gravity as
always. When he went to save Bryce’s chair from getting burnt by sitting on it, we got a
good laugh out of that. Then we played spotlight and murder in the dark at the hut, but
this time on the last go we all walked back to camp leaving the teachers alone at the
hut .Then we got dessert chocolate cake with choc chips and custard. Since it was the
last night everyone started packing bits before going to bed.
Day 4: it was our last day at camp, everyone was packing and cleaning . Tents were
coming down everywhere, everyone was loading the bus and we were ready to go. We
stopped at McDonalds at Grafton for lunch, then it was time to find fuel, so we drove
around in circles looking for a petrol station . Then it was a smooth drive to this nice
beach at Sawtell. We swam and fished and played on the playground. We got about half
an hour there, then it was straight back to school to unload and wash out the bus. It was
a very fun camp, we got to swim and the teachers even got to have a hot shower.
