Student Portfolios
An innovative and highly important learning program that has over several years become part of the rich fabric
of Bowraville Central School is Student Portfolios. This week and next, secondary students are presenting their
individual Portfolios to panels comprising parents, community members, teaching staff and their peers.
Guided by Year Advisors, throughout the school year students reflect on their learning, assembling not only
awards and commendations but also carefully selecting the examples of learning of which they are most proud.
These assignments or workbooks or other creations form the focus of the Portfolio Presentation. Students
reflect upon their own learning, and in doing so set the platform for aspiring to achieve even more.
The Portfolio Presentations for Year 10 students have for many years been the most rigorous, acting as a form
of pre-employment interview. This program is one of the key reasons that our school has developed a
reputation among local employers as having students who are excellently prepared for the workforce and
further training. The very high percentage of our students leaving us to successfully transition into a career or
training of their choice is proof that this is indeed the case.
Good luck to all students taking part in Portfolios, and many thanks to the secondary staff for your commitment
to the program, and to our community members for volunteering your time and expertise. This really is an
initiative of significance, reflecting the wonderful individualised learning that is happening within the school.

• There is a 40km/h speed limit for traffic passing a school bus that is picking up or setting down school children.
• This speed limit is for all traffic travelling in the same direction as the bus, whether the bus is stationary or moving.
• The 40km/h speed limit must be obeyed when the rear “wig-wag” lights on the bus flash.
• Flashing headlights on these buses also alert oncoming motorists that children are close by.
The Year 9 class will be involved in a Peer Support camp at Scotts Head on Monday 12th December for one night. Stu-
dents will be involved in leadership activities to become Peer Support Leaders in 2012. On completion of the course, the
students will receive a certificate for their portfolio, although they can decide whether or not they want to be involved in
Peer Support classes next year.

What a week, Book club has been put in with many students getting ready for the summer break by buying a book. The awards for being a mate to the library or bring 3 mates are being used as the kids are eager to spend the afternoon in the library. Later this week we will be sending home overdue book notices—it is extremely important that if your child receives a note that states a book is missing that you sign the note and send it back. We need to account for the losses each year. During the holidays kids often slip up on their reading, there are so many excellent things to be doing outside. To help your child keep their reading up please find some time to: • Look at the cover, title, pictures and talk about what the book might be about. • Talk about the story so far and what might happen next. • After reading talk about the story. • Talk about the picture and how they add meaning to the text. • Take turns reading a harder book. Noah Griffiths gets to bring 3 friends to a movie afternoon. Beau Davidson, Adam Griffiths and Kaitlyn Morris get to bring a friend to the library for the afternoon. Ben Whalen and Jack Sullivan get a Plastic clip on Book mark plus 20 win bins. Last week’s winning class with a huge percentage of 70% was Mrs Rowell's class. Well Done!! Mrs Rushton
