Every Saturday evening, asmall group of dedicatedvolunteers gathers in aroom behind KapaaMissionary Church (KMC)to pack boxes full of food:canned goods, cereal, meats,fresh fruits and veggies –whatever the HawaiiFoodbank - Kauai Branchhas in stock that week.Another group gathers too –seniors, single moms, peopleliving on the beach, familieswith kids. They depend onthis weekly distribution ofhealthy, quality food. Someof them press forwardanxiously as church volunteers hand out boxes.KMC volunteers stay very busy. Nora Shepherd greetsmany of the people by name, inquiring after theirchildren, calmly assuring them there's enough foreveryone. Her husband Ben and another volunteer, MyronJim, carry boxes for elderly ladies while Mark “Horse”Horst and Val Chang keep packing more – 40 to 60 boxesare distributed each week.The atmosphere is friendly, loving, and upbeat.“We have a good time,” says Ben, who also helps with theshopping each Wednesday. “It gets me out of the house in a

So I got involvedand just fell in love withit.”Kapaa Missionary alsoserves a buffet dinner to about 80 people every 2nd and 4thSaturday. About 15 to 20 volunteers participate, bringingfood, setting up tables and chairs in the church hall, servingand even playing music.

“We've been blessed with a hard-working group,” Norasays.Val Chang, who has been helping for over a year, enjoysmaking her voluntary pantry work part of her Saturdayroutine. “I don't have a million dollars to spend, but I can givetime. Whatever little I can contribute to my community, I'mhappy to do.”

December 17, 2013 – Kawaikini, anew century public charter schooldelivered 478 pounds to the HawaiiFoodbank - Kauai Branch. Setting the bar pretty high in educationwith an emphasis in Hawaiian culture, this K-12 charter school is leading the way indeveloping the academic and career pursuits ofits students. Kawaikini believes that being partof a caring community provides children withthe inner strength to succeed throughout life. A big mahalo to Kawaikini for all that you dofor Kauai!

ISLAND PACIFIC ACADEMY

November 27, 2013 – From preschoolers to seniors, all ofIsland Pacific Academy's students did all they could to helpfeed Hawaii's hungry. At the elementary level, weeklyactivities helped focus the students' attention on helpingothers, and in the upper grades students built foodpyramids in the library to inspire their classmates todonate. In just over three weeks, the school collected 8,821pounds, nearly 17 pounds per student.

y the time you read this, ourannual Hawaii FoodbankFood Drive will be in fullswing. They’re all special, butthis one even more than theothers—it’s the 25th anniversaryof the food drive!Wow. 25 years. That’s a longtime, yet feels like the blink of aneye. As they say, time flies whenyou’re having fun. Yes, I know. “Fun” sounds like an odd way to describe whatwe do, because our mission is serious—to feed Hawaii’shungry families and to give food security to thousands ofpeople who need it. But it IS fun, because we enjoy doing itand we love getting people like you excited about it. I can remember when it was all so new; 25 years ago mostpeople didn’t really see hunger as a problem here. But ourKGMB news director at the time, Terry Heaton, was astrong believer in community service. It was he whoinitiated what would be an enduring relationship with theHawaii Foodbank that continues to this day.

Back then, the news stories I did that focused on thehomeless, families struggling to survive and people whodidn’t know where their next meals were coming fromwere a huge eye opener for me, for the team at KGMB9and for the public. Nowadays everybody knows somebody who needs help.And most people understand WE are part the safety net,which is why the work of the Hawaii Foodbank is sovery important. This year has started off rather badly. The emergencyunemployment funds many families depend on areprecarious, food stamp benefits are frozen and there aremore working families that are in danger of or havealready fallen through the cracks. I know it sounds like I’m repeating myself, but peopleneed our help. And you are the reason we are able tokeep children fed and families afloat. So thank you. Thank you for linking hands with us.Thank you for sticking with us. And thank you formaking our jobs at the Hawaii Foodbank so worthwhileand yes—fun.
