Major Ashworth Gets Cluster to His Medal

Maj. William J. Ashworth of Portland, formerly of WEston, has been awarded an oak leaf clusterto the bronze star for meritorious achievement during the invasion of Palawan. He won the bronzestar during the battle of Biak last year. The decoration was bestowed on him by Maj. Gen. Jens A.Doe, commander of the 31st infantry division.

A 1931 graduate of WEston, Ore., high school, Ashworth subsequently attended GeorgeWashington University and Northwest College of Law. Prior to entering the federal service whenthe Oregon National guard was called to active duty in September, 1940, Maj. Ashworth servedas secretary to the United States district attorney of Oregon. He served as campaign secretary toWalter M. Pierce, former eastern Oregon congressman, from 1934 to 1938. In 1937 he went toWashington, D. C., as speaker of "the little congress."

Mrs. Gertrude L. Ashworth, his wife, is residing at 2533 S. E. Taylor street, Portland. The majorhas served in the adjutant-general section of the 41st for six years. He went overseas in March,1942, as a master sergeant and won his promotion to major last May. He has been awarded the airmedal for courier operations in Papuan, New Guinea, in January 1943.

MILTON-FREEWATER -- Services will be conducted in a local chapel here Friday at 10 a.m.for Merle Anderson, 55, of Arlington, who died in a Portland hospital Tuesday. He had been inthe hospital for three months.

Anderson was born in Milton, Aug. 30, 1903. He had lived in Arlington for the past 20 years. Hewas stationed there with the highway patrol and later went into the garage business.

Survivors are: his wife, Helen and a son, William, in Arlington; and his mother, Mrs. LolaAnderson of Milton-Freewater.

Clyde Staggs was born in 1862 near Weston, and spent most of his life in Umatilla County.

He married May Ashworth at Pendleton in 1912. Their one child, Beulah, Mrs. George Rose, nowlives in Salem.

After moving to Milton, Clyde worked for the city as an electrician and machinist. His co-workers at the old city plant in South Milton were Albert McKinley, Charlie Heater and RudeEdwards.

He passed away in 1964 and his widow, May survives, living in Milton.

BEULAH ROSE Nov. 18, 1917 – May 16, 2009

SALEM - Former area resident Beulah LaVelle Rose, 91, died May 16, 2009, here from strokecomplications.

The celebration of her life was held May 20 at Clear Lake United Methodist Church in Keizer,OR. She was buried at City View Cemetery in Salem. Keizer Funeral Chapel handledarrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Willamette Humane Society, 4246 Turner Road S.E.,Salem, OR 97317.

Mrs. Rose was born Nov. 18, 1917, in Milton OR, to Clyde and May Ashworth Staggs. Shegraduated from McLoughlin High School in 1935. She married George "Bud" Rose on June 20,1941.

The couple owned and managed two movie theaters in Milton and Freewater, OR. During hisservice in WWII, she managed the theaters by herself. They later sold the theaters and bought afarm outside Dayton and farmed wheat, peas and alfalfa. In 1954, the family moved to WallaWalla, where they owned the Brentwood Apartments. In 1962, they traded the apartment housefor a motel in Salem and moved there. They sold the motel in 1970 and moved to Keizer. Shethen worked on into her 80's for several chiropractors.

She enjoyed horses and was an accomplished rider. She was a member of Zenith Women's Club,the Silver Sneakers program, and attended the Keizer Clear Lake United Methodist Church.

She is survived by a son Greg Rose; a daughter Betty Hastings; 7 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren.

The memorial service will be 2 pm Monday at Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home, 902 S. Main St.,Milton-Freewater, OR 97862. The Rev Duane Geyer will officiate. Inurnment will be in WestonCemetery.

Mrs. Olds was born Dec. 16, 1914, near Weston to Fred and Ida Ashworth Phillips. She grew upand attended school in the Weston and Milton-Freewater areas.

After her schooling, she married Leston Olds on Dec. 24, 1936, in Walla Walla. The couple livedin Milton-Freewater for 21 years.

She was a mother and homemaker until 1957, when the family bought the El Rancho Motel inRedmond, OR. She was bookkeeper for the business.

In 1960, they sold the motel and moved to Spokane. She worked as a security officer for CrescentDepartment Store for 13 years. She also worked for the Ernest, Lamonts and Pay-N-Save storesin Spokane as a head security officer, retiring in 1977. That same year, the couple built a house inSublimity, where they spent their retirement years. Mr. Olds died Oct. 13, 2005.

She enjoyed her home and working in her flowers and yard. She was a member of the FirstChristian Church, AARP and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Mrs. Olds is survived by a son, Randolph Olds of Sublimity; a brother Merle Phillips ofVancouver, WA; two granddaughters, and six great-granddaughters.

TOOTIE OLINGER

MILTON-FREEWATER - Elene I. "Tootie" Olinger, 89, of 53170 Tootie Lane, died Jan 23, atKadlec Medical Center, Richland.

Visitation will be at Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home, 902 S. Main, M-F, prior to the 10:30 amfuneral Friday at First Christian Church, M-F. The Rev. Ginger Johnston of Grace PresbyterianChurch will officiate. The concluding service and burial will be in Weston Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Grace Presbyterian Church, Weston-McEwen Pipe and Drum Corpsor a charity of the donor's choice through the funeral home.

Mrs. Olinger was born April 12, 1915, near Weston to John E. "Sed"" and Olive AshworthMcLean. She attended school for three years on her father's Dry Creek ranch.

Her father died Dec. 16, 1926. She and her mother moved into Milton in 1927 where shegraduated in 1931 from McLoughlin Union High School. She was the first female cheerleader atMac-Hi, as a junior and senior. She was a bookkeeper at J.E. Olinger & Sons Lumber andHardware.

In March 1934 she and Donald Jasper Olinger married in Weston. They lived on Dry Creek ranchwhere she helped with the farm and cooked for harvest crews.

In 1967 they sold the ranch because of his health and moved to a home north of M-F. She lovedbeing with people. She traveled extensively until halted by surgery. She loved to sew and garden.She gave flowers to churches for weddings, anniversaries and other occasions.

In May 1997 she was named Weston Pioneer Reunion Queen. She received the 1998 M-FChamber of Commerce Golden Pioneer Award for outstanding community service. Mr. Olingerdied Aug. 16, 1987.

She was a member of Grace Presbyterian Church, Pythian Sisters, Integrity Rebekah Lodge 175,Loyalty Chapter 47 Order of Eastern Star, the M-F Garden, Women's Improvement and Red Hatclubs, Jolly Circle of Weston and Milton-Freewater Historical Society.

Survivors include son and daught-in-law Jasper E. "Bub" and Jeanie Olinger of Pasco; daughterand son-in-law Sharon and Don Johnson of Walla Walla; five granchildren and six great-grandchildren.
