Halos For Angels Helps Chatham Resident

On Sun., Sept. 27, food donations and fitness will

be brought together at Chatham’s second annual

Fit-to-Food 5K Run; an event that encouragesthose in Chatham to live a healthier and more active life,

and also helps the Chatham Food Bank of NJ (CFBNJ)

stock up on much-needed supplies.

The opening ceremonies for the event will begin at

9:45 a.m. at the Chatham Club. The race itself will beginat 10 a.m.. The run is organized by the Chatham Club,

which teamed up with the Mayor’s Health and Wellness

Club for promotion and encouragement of the event.

Awards will be given to the top overall male and

female finishers. There will also be individual age group

medals given to those between the ages of 14 and 80.Commemorative t-shirts will also be given to the first

500 attendees.

“We decided to do this run as a way to promote fit-

ness in the community,” said Barbara Grobart of the

Chatham 5K Mixes Food And FitnessChatham Club. She was heavily involved in the plan-ning of the event. “We decided to do this run as a way

to promote fitness in the community. Fitness and

healthy-eating habits go hand-in-hand, so having a fit-

ness event to raise money for the CFBNJ seemed like a

perfect fit.”This is the second year that the Fit to Food run will

be held. Last year’s event was attended by more than

two hundred participants, plus family and friends who

supported the runners. This year, double that number is

expected. Festivities included pumpkin painting, face

painting, light food and beverages, great music, and afun awards ceremony. This year, more vendors have

been added, along with a photo booth, and an auto-graphed Bruce Springsteen guitar will be raffled off.

The Bruce Springsteen guitar was signed and donat-

ed by the man himself, one of the most popular andwell-loved musicians in the state. The guitar is a 1952

reissue Fender Telecaster. One raffle ticket costs $100,

and entries are limited to 500 New Jersey residents. All

entries must be received on Sept. 25, at no later than 3

p.m. The drawing will take place at the conclusion of the event. Tickets for the raffle can be found here:

“Having the Fit-to-Food 5K Run to benefit the

Morris County is home to 39 different municipal-

ities, and Chatham Township was ranked to bethe safest out of them – as well as being the

safest in New Jersey, according to a recent study publishedby Safewise.com.

Safewise.com labels itself as the “authority on safety

and home-security news,” according to its website. Itrecently released its yearly list of the safest towns in NJ,

using crime data reported to the FBI. Only towns with

more than ten thousand residents were ranked; the site

used population statistics from 2013. Safewise first com-

pared the number of reported violent crimes and propertycrimes in each city, and then based each on a per-1,000

person ratio, making the ratios even despite the variety in

town size. Twelve other Morris County towns were listed

as well.According to Safewise’s data, Chatham has a violent

crimes per thousand rate of zero. It has a property crimesper thousand rate of 3.93. In another study done by

Safewise, Chatham was ranked as the fourteenth safest

township in the nation. Its police department also recently

attained an accreditation by the NJ State Association of

Chiefs of Police Accreditation Commission.Chief of Police Steven Hennelly credited much of the

rating to the police force in Chatham, as well as other

elected officials.

“The hard work and dedication of our police officersalong with the vigilance of our residents in reporting

crime and suspicious activity makes our police force espe-

cially effective,” he said. “The support and commitment

of our elected officials in providing the necessaryresources that allow us to effectively police the communi-ty helps as well.”

Hennelly also points to two programs in the town – a

community policing program, and a recently-restored

neighborhood watch program.

Community policing is a philosophy that promotes andsupports organizational strategies to address the causes

and reduce the fear of crime and social disorder through

problem solving and community police partnerships,

according to information found on the website of the

Chatham Township police force. The goal of the commu-

nity policing program is to maintain the quality of life cur-rently found in Chatham, and makes sure that the lines of

communication between police and residents are clear and

open. The town has been divided into ten districts, with

each district being assigned one community policing offi-

cer. The program is led by Officer Michael Bloom.The recently-restored neighborhood watch program

helps build upon this philosophy, seeking to continue to

build the police-citizen partnership and make sure that

everything that could be a concern is reported.

“Neighborhood watch is Homeland Security at the

most basic level,” reads the police force webpage. “It is anopportunity to volunteer and work towards the safety and

security of our homes and our homeland. Neighborhood

Watch empowers citizens and communities to become

active in emergency preparedness, as well as in the fightagainst crime.”The group works as a set of local eyes and ears, which

is a massive help to the police force in the area, since they

often cannot keep track of everything that is happening in

such a large area.

“The program centers on neighbors working togetheralong with the CTPD to help reduce crime and improve

the overall safety of our neighborhoods,” said Kevin

Sullivan, the mayor of Chatham. “If anyone has an inter-

Austin Bunn will speak about his

new short story collection, “The

Brink,” featuring stories told in a variety of

styles and settings with an emphasis ontransformation, on Sat., Sept. 19, at 2 p.m.

munity, family and pets. Plan how to staysafe and communicate during the disasters.

Change Batteries in smoke detectors- itcould mean the difference between life anddeath.

Have a charged fire extinguisher near thekitchen and know how to use it.

Maintain flashlights with batteriesthroughout the home.

Maintain a disaster package for the fami-ly.

Conduct a family drill to be sure of alter-nate ways to get out of the house.

designed to make it simple and inter-

esting to search for tourist destinations and

activities in Morris County, to help draw

more out-of-state and out-of-county tourismand to interest Morris County residents in

The new site, which was formally

unveiled last night at the Morris CountyBoard of Freeholders’ meeting in

Morristown, includes connections to historic

sites, arts and culture, outdoors, dining,

lodging, shopping, services and organiza-

tions, plus a listing of events of interest to

said Leslie Bensley, executive director of theMorris County Tourism Bureau, who recent-

The Tourism Bureau partnered in the

development of the a new website with

Paramore Digital, which has designed anddeveloped a website that is a one-stop plan-

ning resource and online community for vis-

itors and residents.

The website has a modern, clean and

intuitive design, and is built using respon-

sive design for an optimal viewing experi-ence across multiple platforms and devices.

Paramore custom-developed the site tomake it easy to create and manage website

content, and made it scalable so it can easily

grow as new technologies and services areneeded.

“This new website draws visitors to

major tourism attractions in the county

through inspiring and engaging content,’’

said Freeholder Director Kathy DeFillippo.

The new site offers a host of interesting

facts on the entire county, including a snap-

shot tour and history of all 39 Morris County

municipalities. Did you know? The story of

Butler is written in rubber. The author wasRichard Butler, who amassed a rubber man-

ufacturing empire in Butler, forming the

Rubber Comb and Jewelry Company in

1876. The earliest settlers in Chester came

in 1640 when "Black River" establisheditself as a settlement primarily because of

the intersection of two Lenape Indian trails.

The new site also allows users to “stroll’’

through the Willlowood Arboretum, take a

tour of the Whippany Railway Museum,view the scenic Berkshire Valley Golf

Course and wilderness of Hacklebarney

State Park, or “wander through’’ the

Morristown National Historical Park. The

photos are big and beautiful, the text is easy

to read, and the links to helpful sites areplentiful.

The Morris County Tourism Bureau is a

“destination marketing organization’’ with a

goal of positively affecting the economy of

Morris County by promoting the area’sexceptional historic, cultural and recreation-

al opportunities. Bensley said the organiza-

tion has been interested in upgrading its

Webelos Scouts to earn their complete twoBelt Loop requirements and earn theirAcademics Pin for Geography. The pro-grams take place on Tues., Nov. 10, from

4:30 p.m.- 6:30 p.m.; Sat., Nov. 14, from2:30 p.m.– 4:30 p.m.; and Tues., Dec. 8,from 4:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.

Scout Programs At MHHM This Fall cities. In small groups, Scouts will build 3-Dmodels in clay of one of the geographicareas of the Garden State. The hands-onstudy of maps will expand as Scouts tracethe routes of two famous explorers from the

past. Scouts will examine information aboutthe members of the family who lived atMacculloch Hall and use current satelliteviews on the web to identify locations wherethey lived before, during, and after the CivilWar. The program concludes with a floor-size game board testing the Scouts on factsand terms they have learned about geogra-phy, NJ and the Civil War. Architecture Merit Badge. During the pro-gram activities will help boys comparebuilding styles and trends today with thoseof the past as they closely examine one of Morristown’s historic neighborhoods during

a 45-minute walking tour. Scouts will dis-cuss the differences between renewablebuilding materials and recycled buildingmaterials as they are used in construction,and will role-play an “architect-client” inter-view with a peer addressing requirementsand goals of a building project. Scouts willalso be introduced to three career options inarchitecture and learn to make a scale draw-ing. The cost for the Boy Scout program is$10 per Scout and $5 per adult. Maximumgroup size is 20 participants.

Coincidentally, the Victorian age of the late 19th Century

was also the pinnacle years of Thomas Edison’s career thatmade him the world’s famous wizard of invention capable of moving ideas off from the science fiction category to theworld of tomorrow. In 1897 H.G. Wells created his sciencefiction masterpiece The War Of The Worlds. The Hearstnewspaper group commissioned a sequel to follow it.Science editor - Garrett Putnam Serviss would write the nextstory. This sequel follow up was entitled Edison’s Conquestof Mars which appeared in Feb. of 1898. Thomas Edisonbecame the heroic character of this science fiction world.The iconic persona of Edison was a name that lent thebelievability factor to a new fiction genre – the space tech-no-thriller. Serviss’ book was the first space battle to everappear in print.

The West Orange laboratory complex was built in 1887.The facilities were well equipped with many kinds of machinery and instruments, with a factory supply of materi-als from around the world that employed dedicated and care-fully-chosen workers. Employees that worked at Edison’sfactory laboratories did not need to read a science fictionbook to believe that Thomas Edison had the imagination totake them into the future with his inventions and ideas.There was a lot of excitement working for Thomas Edisonthat attracted the best talent pool of employees not only

locally but from around the world. This pool also includedgreat performing artists for his film and music studio pro-ductions. Edison’s closest workers were his engineering anddevelopment team that he fondly called his Muckers.
