Sometimes on Facebook people’s profile pictures
show up as cars and the question becomes are they
a car or are they a person? But what if there was aprofile picture of an American bulldog and it was actu-
ally the dog controlling the page!Sunny, the American bulldog is one of many dogs in
the area that is on a hunt for a new home, but unlike
other dogs Sunny has his own Facebook page in order to
Volunteer Steven Block with Sunny
Sunny The American Bulldog Creates Facebook Page To Find A Homefind a permanent home. Thanks to a determined bunch of
volunteers from the former Jersey Animal Coalition (JAC)in South Orange, they are working their hardest to find
one for him through his page.
Jared Dukas, co-founder and treasurer of the new
Mattie’s Friends Non-profit program in South Orange thatstarted shortly after JAC closed it’s doors in 2014, startedhis Facebook page this past June.
“The volunteers of the former JAC were dedicated to
ensure the animals received homes and or alternative
accommodations,” Dukas said. “So we created the
Facebook page to give Sunny more publicity.”
Because of Mattie’s Friends and its faithful volunteersthey are able to fundraise for the animals on a tax-exempt
basis with the IRS. According to Dukas, there were
approximately 15 JAC dogs left when Mattie’s Friends
formed in August with a few who were adopted in the last
90 days that JAC had left. Sunny was one of four dogs thatstill needed a home, and to Dukas Sunny “is a good boy
who just needs a special home.”
Sunny was sent to the JAC Shelter in the spring of 2011
by Animal Control. Since he was one of the last dogs left
after the JAC closed last year, the volunteers took it uponthemselves to create a Facebook page for Sunny in help
find him a permanent home.
According to Sunny’s Facebook about me, he says,
“my name is Sunny and I'm 6 years old. I'm a boy and an
American Bulldog mix. I'm 100 percent housebroken and
love to cuddle with people I know. My favorite game is"keep away." I am very intelligent and love to learn new
things. I have been crate and obedience trained by a
renowned dog trainer. I would love a fenced-in yard to run
and play in. My perfect forever home would be a single-
pet household. Because I am very strong and a bit protec-
tive, as bulldogs tend to be, I would do best in an adult
only home with people who are confident and familiar
with the breed. –Sunny’”
Sunny currently lives with the professional trainer at
their facility in South Jersey where he has received addi-tional reinforcement. The environment that is best for
Sunny, according to Dukas, is an adult-only home where
he is the only pet.

The 3-15 record posted by theColumbia High School boys’ soccerprogram last season is but a distant
memory. The coaches, as well as the stu-
dent-athletes who comprise the Cougars’roster already know this to be true and inshort order, the opponents who face them onthe pitch may also learn that lesson.
The Cougars have trained very hard forthe season that awaits them and they areclearly focused upon not only competing, but indeed winning more games than theydid in 2014.
Keep in mind that Columbia has severalreturning veterans in the current lineup andthey will be ready for the challenges thatthey will meet not only in conference play, but in non-conference matches as well.
Key returning players for the Cougarsthis fall include Bill Baron (senior, centerback); Nathaniel Dama-Etienne (senior, holding midfielder); Andrew Thompson(senior, forward); Willy Unterkoefler(senior, center midfielder); Ryan Perlee(junior, center back); and Mateo Green(sophomore, goal keeper).
A pair of newcomers to the varsity roster

Citizens Mini Bus, a 14 passenger mini busthat provides transportation to the shoppingareas and key locations within the Villageevery Tuesday through Friday. In addition, trips to nearby shopping malls are taken onMondays, usually two times a month.Advance reservation is required.
Key Returning Players Ready For Soccer Challenges This Seasonwho may provide a lasting impact forColumbia are Max Maidenberg (senior, striker); and Rashid Peart (sophomore, mid-fielder). Columbia Head Coach JoshRussotto noted that Maidenberg did not play
soccer in 2014, but was on the team as asophomore.
“Captains Bill Barron, WillyUnterkoefler and Andrew Thompson [will]utilize experience and maturity to guide theteam through a tough Super EssexConference American Division,” Russottosaid. “Nathaniel Damas-Etienne [will] leadwith consistent and composed performancesto bring calm to the midfield. MaxMaidenberg [will] lead by example andmake players around him better. MateoGreen [will] be a disciplined and vocal
leader. Ryan Perlee [will] be a dominantphysical force and main communicator of our back line.”
Through hard work and dedication, theCougars just may achieve some of the loftygoals that they have set for this season.
“Our goals are improved performances inevery match and to stay healthy,” Russottosaid. “We want to contend for a Divisiontitle and advance in the Essex CountyTournament and qualify for the (NJSIAA)State Tournament.’’
The Super Essex Conference AmericanDivision feature a number of high qualitysoccer programs and the Cougars will cer-tainly have their work cut out for them onthe pitch against all divisional opponents
this year.“Millburn [is a favorite], they won the
division last year,” Russotto said.“Livingston won the Essex CountyTournament in 2014. Montclair, WestOrange, Seton Hall Prep and Newark EastSide [will all be strong competitors this sea-son].”

“This kind of environment would be
great for Sunny as it would minimize thechallenges of his owner in their efforts to
reinforce his training curriculum,” he said.
“Your really can ‘teach an old dog new
tricks,’ but ensuring the dog continues with
those desired behaviors, it’s all about rein-forcement and making sure the people
understand what they need to do with a
dog.
“Someone who adopts Sunny needs to
offer firm guidance and leadership,”
Dukas added.Sunny did have skin cancer last year
and underwent surgery and treatment.
According to Dukas, he came through fineand in February checked out as good as
can be. “He is truly a survivor,” Dukassaid.
“This dog finding his forever home
would be the perfect ending to the shelter’s
closing,” Dukas said. “Although two dogs
have since passed away due to age or ill-ness, not one animal from the former
Jersey Animal Coalition was put down due
to ‘no room’.”
“That’s something the volunteers, JAC
and the people of South Orange andMaplewood can truly be proud of,” he
added.

Essex County Executive Joseph N.
DiVincenzo, Jr. recently
announced that the Regatta
Children’s Playground in the Essex
County South Mountain RecreationComplex would be expanded with new
swings and a cargo net climbing area for
children ages five to 12 years. In the one
year that the playground has been
opened, it has become a popular attrac-
tion, and creating a larger play area is
needed to accommodate the number of
families who visit daily.
“The spectacular setting and location
near the waterfront make it easy to under-
stand why the Regatta Playground has
become such a popular destination for
parents and their children,” DiVincenzo
said. “I regularly visit this site and rou-
tinely see children waiting in line to use
the swings or climb on the equipment.
This is something we could not overlook
and expanding the play area was the best
option to maintain the viability of the
playground.”
Freeholder President Britnee
Timberlake said, “The Reservoir area is
such a beautiful place that it has to be one
of my favorite places. The County
Executive has done such a wonderful jobof capturing the natural beauty of this
area. This project was unanimously sup-
ported by the board because we under-
stood how important it is.”
West Orange Mayor Robert Parisi
said, “I have watched the improvements
unfold at this waterfront, and how the
County Executive has turned a desolate
area into the premiere recreation facility
in the state. We are pleased with the
transformation because our township
benefits from it. Whenever I come here,
the area is always filled with people.”
The new play area will have a total of
18 new swings for children, a cargo net
apparatus for climbing and a rubberized
surface to maximize safety. It will be
connected to the original playground on
the north side and be fenced in so chil-

dren cannot wander. Additional landscap-
ing will be planted around the new play-
ground section, an irrigation system will
be installed and Adirondack chairs and
trash receptacles will be included. It is
anticipated that the original playground
will remain open during construction and
may be closed only when work is con-
ducted to connect the two play areas.
Whirl Construction from Port
Monmouth was awarded a publicly bid
contract for $377,000 to perform the con-
struction work. The Essex County
Department of Public Works will monitor
the project to answer questions and avoid
delays. The new playground is scheduledto open in the fall of 2015.
The Regatta Children’s Playground
was opened a year ago on Aug. 14 and
became an instant hit with the public. It is
located adjacent to the paddle boating
area and picnic pavilion and is designed
with a nautical theme. It has 24 separate
pieces of play equipment and a rubber-
ized safety surface. An open area within
the playground has a synthetic grass sur-
face so there is less wear and tear and it
is enclosed by a chain link fence to pre-
vent children from wandering away. In
addition, stamped concrete pathways link
the playground to the picnic area, paddle
boating and pathway around the reser-
voir.
The 115-acre Orange Reservoir prop-
erty is located in West Orange and is
within the boundaries of the Essex
County South Mountain Reservation.
The City of Orange ceased using the
Reservoir as a source of drinking water in
the late 1990s. With more than 2,000
acres, Essex County South Mountain
Reservation is the largest reservation inthe historic Essex County Parks System.
The County began purchasing land for
South Mountain Reservation in 1895,
making South Mountain one of the
County’s first parks. Today, the Essex
County South Mountain Recreation
Complex includes the Reservation, Turtle
Back Zoo, Codey Arena, Treetop

Recently, a new concept has taken
hold across the country with
“Virtual Runs.” A virtual run can
be done by individuals, families, or even
groups. It’s a self-marathon – on a tread-
mill, in a park, or wherever.
The Rogue Runners, a new local com-
pany based in Rockaway, combines theruns with raising money for charity,
offering even more fun with monthly
Virtual Runs Celebrate Favorites And Help Charitiesspecial themed events and medallions. The first event is for the kickoff of the
next season of the Walking Dead in
October, called The Running Dead.
Registered participants receive a special-
ly designed commemorative medal(bling) and can choose one of two chari-
ties to benefit from part of their registra-
tion fee. Individuals or groups can walk,
jog, or run. For even more fun, fans of
the various series or movies can make upevent costumes! The Rogue Runners site
and Facebook pages will highlight photos
sent in by participants.
Those interested can get more details
at http://www.theroguerunners.com/.
Registration for the first three virtualruns is under way now. For those who
have entered 5K runs before, cost can be
anywhere from $45-$75 for registration
fees. The Rogue Runners only asks for
$25 per registrant, with much of feegoing to charity and for the “bling”
medallions. A pretty good deal!
Besides The Running Dead in
October, there is another one in
November tied into the fourth and finalmovie in the Hunger Games franchise
called “The District 10K” and for the
new Star Wars movie coming out in
December called “The (ma=) Force
Awakens Run.”Carry Crawford of Rockway, the com-
pany developer, admits she, her family,
and many of her friends are real geeks.
“We all love all these great TV series
and movies,” said Crawford. “We wantedto come up with a way of having fun
while exercising, and raise money for
some worthy charities at the same time.”
She went on to suggest that, “groups of
fans can plan a special event day with
props and costumes and they’ll get a spe-cial remembrance of their event with the
great bling we’re offering.”
The Rogue Runners will continue to
use themed ideas and parodies inspired
by favorite movies, television shows, comic books or web-comics.

Those interested in socializing with folks who keep thewheels of the museum turning at Edison’s 19thCentury factory complex in West Orange can attend
the Muckers’ Ball fundraiser on Sat., Oct. 3. It promises atradition of food, drink, music and dancing under the big tent
- a location where Thomas Edison and his Muckers hadsome great celebrations. For more info on the Muckers’ Ballcontact the Friends of Thomas Edison Historical ParkFoTENHP www.foedison.org; call 973-736-2916; or [email protected].
Touring the legendary work site of Thomas Edison andthe growing curiosity in Steampunk makes this NationalHistorical Park NHP in West Orange even more uniquelyremarkable today.
Steampunk is a subgenre of devotees that are fascinatedby retro science fiction, technology and artistic designs of the late 19th-century that ignited with the force of steam-powered machinery. Steampunk channels the era's perspec-tive of those that lived during this futuristic thinkingVictorian and American Wild West age. Steampunk is aboutrevisiting its own distinct fashion, culture, architectural styleand art. It was a time of colorful futuristic storytelling fromH. G. Wells and Jules Verne. The Thomas Alva Edison fac-tory laboratories and his Victorian Glenmont estate home inWest Orange are in themselves Steampunk time capsulesmaintained by our National Park Service. It is also furtherpreserved by private funds, foundations and the Friends of TENHP that do dedicated fundraising where it is needed. They provide the additional renovations, enhancements and
special project exhibits that are not covered in the NHPbudget. The FoTENHP also promotes the era’s pastimes of gardening, fashion, advertisements and the music that wereconnected to these Edison inventions in true spirit.
Coincidentally, the Victorian age of the late 19th Century
was also the pinnacle years of Thomas Edison’s career thatmade him the world’s famous wizard of invention capable of moving ideas off from the science fiction category to theworld of tomorrow. In 1897 H.G. Wells created his sciencefiction masterpiece The War Of The Worlds. The Hearstnewspaper group commissioned a sequel to follow it.Science editor - Garrett Putnam Serviss would write the nextstory. This sequel follow up was entitled Edison’s Conquestof Mars which appeared in Feb. of 1898. Thomas Edisonbecame the heroic character of this science fiction world. The iconic persona of Edison was a name that lent thebelievability factor to a new fiction genre – the space tech-no-thriller. Serviss’ book was the first space battle to ever
appear in print. The West Orange laboratory complex was built in 1887.
The facilities were well equipped with many kinds of machinery and instruments, with a factory supply of materi-als from around the world that employed dedicated and care-fully-chosen workers. Employees that worked at Edison’sfactory laboratories did not need to read a science fictionbook to believe that Thomas Edison had the imagination totake them into the future with his inventions and ideas. There was a lot of excitement working for Thomas Edisonthat attracted the best talent pool of employees not only
locally but from around the world. This pool also includedgreat performing artists for his film and music studio pro-ductions. Edison’s closest workers were his engineering anddevelopment team that he fondly called his Muckers. Therewere great employee celebrations too that went along withthe hard work that helped produce the grist for futuristic pulpfiction in its day.
See the Thomas Edison’s Steampunk Collection. Visitthe Thomas Alva Edison Museum – NPS Open Wed.through Sun., 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Admission fee is $10. Formore details, go to http://www.nps.gov/edis/.
