WELCOME TO OUR NEWLY BAPTIZED!

During the pandemic we continue to welcome new members to our parish community and the Catholic Church through the Sacrament of Baptism. This week we welcome:

Sophie Katherine Murray May you always know God’s love for you and the prayers and support of our parish community.

MINISTRIES DURING COVID-19

Although it may seem hard to keep track of the day of the week, or even what month we are in, August is quickly rolling by and soon the fall will be upon us. Some ministries and groups that would normally start at the beginning of September may not be quite ready to start up again; we will keep you posted as updates are available. However, many ministries are thriving and helping the parish community stay safe, connected and spiritually nourished in these difficult times. Below are all the ministries currently operating in some form. If you are interested in joining any of them please contact the Parish Office for more information.

LITTLE BOOKS

SEASONAL DEVOTIONALS Each year we offer you the opportunity to order Little Books, a set of daily devotional booklets for Advent, Lent and Easter. We are very happy to be able to offer this again this year, at the same price of $5 per set of three seasons. These books proved to be very supportive during our time of shutdown, so we are grateful to the publishers for keeping the price low again this year and making this such an accessible resource. If you would like to order a set(s) please call or email the parish office (519-745-7301, [email protected]). Orders must be placed by Sept. 14. $5 cost will be collected when the Advent Little Books arrive.

NOVENA FOR OUR STUDENTS, TEACHERS AND SCHOOL STAFF

As our families, children, teachers and staff prepare to start a new school year that is so different from all others, let us keep them in prayer. The Diocese of

Hamilton has created a Novena for us all to pray in solidarity with those returning to school. Please join us by

praying a short prayer every day beginning this Monday August 31. Each day the prayer will be posted on our website,

www.stfranciskw.ca.

WELCOME FR. MURRAY!

Fr. Murray McDermott, CR officially becomes our Pastor this Tuesday September 1st. Since many of our parishioners are not yet able to join us in person we wanted to help you get to know Fr. Murray, even from a distance. On our website on September 1st you will find a video interview Fr. Murray gave in 2017 on the occasion of his 40th Anniversary of Ordination. There are some great pictures from his life (love the afro!) and you will learn about the many ministries Fr. Murray has been involved in over the years. We would also like to thank Fr. Raphael for his leadership during the past two months. There have been many challenges thanks to the pandemic, but your care for our faith community has kept us hopeful throughout. We are grateful to be keeping you as our Associate Pastor. St. Francis Parish has been blessed to have wonderful shepherds over the years, and we look forward to many fruitful years with Fr. Murray and Fr. Raphael to guide us.

FIRST FRIDAY ADORATION This Friday September 4 following the 9am Mass you are welcome to remain in the church for Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament followed by Benediction. Adoration will take place the First Friday of every month as in the past.

The View from Fr. Raph’s Window…

As I approach the end of my term as Administrator of St. Francis parish on September 1st at 12 noon, and return to being the Associate Pastor here, I thought I’d look back on a few things I’ve learned in the past two months.

First, a few people have asked me over the past two months what the difference is between an Administrator and a Pastor. According to the Code of Canon Law, there is basically not a huge difference. An Administrator is for all practical purposes the temporary Pastor: “A parochial administrator is bound by the same duties and possesses the same rights as a pastor unless the diocesan bishop establishes otherwise.” (Canon 540 § 1) And an Administrator is encouraged to basically keep things in a holding pattern until the next Pastor is appointed.

The biggest difference I am aware of between the two is that the Bishop may move an Administrator at any time, for any reason, while a Pastor does have some rights to stability.

Second, it’s been a good learning experience for me to take on new responsibilities – if only temporarily – and to reflect on my own style of leadership. Navigating the re-opening of St. Francis during COVID has involved some trial and error, and creativity on the part of our staff and from you, to observe and adapt to the guidelines from the Diocese while trying to serve our mission all the same. I would like to thank you for your patience, co-operation, and continued generous contributions during these uncertain times.

And finally, the focus or raison d’être of parish administrators is not merely to manage the goods of the parish, but to be “administrators of the mysteries of God” as St. Paul writes in his first letter to the Corinthians. Thankfully with the re-opening of the parish and the restrictions due to COVID, most of my time has been focused on that – we’ve had a similar number of funerals and baptisms, one wedding, the sacrament reconciliation by appointment, individual anointing of the sick and communion to the sick, and our usual Mass schedule. But it’s also a reminder to me that what we find to be the norm in most North

American parishes – having only one priest – is not really how it’s supposed to be. For most of the past two months, I have felt like I was merely “catching up” to the next thing. But when Fr. Tim was still here, the division of labour allowed us both to expand our horizons and branch out to more than just sacramental ministry within the walls of the parish, more mission than maintenance. And so I have a renewed appreciation to pray for new vocations to the priesthood and to the Congregation of the Resurrection specifically, so that we can have some more of that missionary creativity and dynamism.

~ Fr. Raphael CR

DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO NEEDS A PRAYER SHAWL?

Prayer shawls assure our loved ones that the community of St. Francis Parish is praying for them, and that we journey with them even when we cannot be present. Do you have a loved one who is suffering physically, mentally or spiritually, or someone who is celebrating a milestone, starting a new job, moving to a new home, expecting a baby? A prayer shawl can bring peace in stressful times. If you would like a prayer shawl please call the office and make an appointment, there is no cost.

SEPTEMBER PARISH CALENDAR Our online parish calendar has been updated for the month of September, and a printable copy of the calendar can be accessed on the same page.
