Liturgy Corner: compiled by Pat Raschio (sources Formed, At Home With The Word, Scott Hahn and Loyo-la Press, Sourcebook) Whatever the Father has is mine. The Spirit of truth will guide us. This week we return to the liturgical season of Ordinary Time. This Sunday and next Sunday, however, are designated as solemnities, special days that call our attention to central mysteries of our faith. Today, on the first Sunday after Pen-tecost, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. This feast invites us to consider what we believe about God, who has revealed himself to us in the Trinity—one God in three persons. The Most Holy Trinity is a central mystery of our faith. This celebration of the way God has revealed Godself to us: three Persons in one – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. In becoming human, Jesus invited everyone to participate in the loving communion that the Father, Son and Holy Spirit share. We respond to this invitation each time we bless ourselves with the Sign of the Cross. In today’s Gospel reading, we are given a unique and intimate look into the very heart of the Blessed Trinity. As Jesus describes the rela-tionship between himself, his Father, and the Holy Spirit, one central point emerges: God’s very life is one of commun-ion. The Trinity is a relationship of giving and receiving, a communion of life and love. God exists as a relationship of Persons. This reality brings us to a very important question: What does the Trinity mean for us, as we live our lives? The communion of Persons of the Holy Trinity reminds us of the importance of relationships in our world, and at the same time provides the model for what these relationships are supposed to look like. When the Scriptures say we are made in the image and likeness of God, it means we were made to live like the Trinity. We are made for communion, for relation-ship, with God and the people God has placed in our lives. God wants us to model and witness to him as Trinity, which means we are made to love as he loved. We are to give ourselves totally in relationship with him and with others. Only when we live in self- giving love, like God himself, will we find our fulfillment in life. During the next few weeks, try to be more mindful as you make the Sign of the Cross. In marking our bodies and speaking the words, “in the name of the Fa-ther…,” we physically and spiritually incorporate ourselves into communion with the Trinity. How are we doing in our relationships with others? Especially the most difficult. Finding Christ in the Psalms Jesus taught His Apostles that the Book of Psalms speaks of Him and His mission. "Everything written about Me in the Law of Moses and in the Prophets and Psalms must be fulfilled," He told them on the night of His Resurrection. Jesus applied specific Psalms to him. So did the apostles in their preaching and writings. This ancient practice continues in the liturgy. In the Psalms chosen for Sunday Mass read-ings, sometimes the Church invites us to hear a direct reference to Christ. Other times, we're invited to hear the voice of Christ crying out to the Father. And still other times, we hear the Father talking to the Son. Psalm 54 is heard this way in the readings for the 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time. Originally sung by David when he was be-trayed by the Ziphites we're invited to hear the Psalm as a confident appeal by Christ in His Passion: "Fierce men seek My life...Behold...the Lord sustains My life."

“Merciful Like the Father.” I read this post and had to share. During this political season we hear this idea as a way to keep out the “bad guys.” This reflection gave me much to ponder. There is a lot of talk about building walls in our current political environment, that all the evil in the world is somehow “out there” and all will be well if we only keep those whom we perceive as our ene-mies contained somewhere else in the world. This is the modern version of the old saying “good fences make good neighbors.” The experience of the early Church on the Feast of Pentecost contradicts this view. Having received

the Holy Spirit, the first disciples sang out loud in praise of God. The commotion was so loud that it attracted a crowd of people from all parts of the Roman Empire (which, in the view of the New Testament, was synonymous with the world) who did not understand what was happening. The disciples were able to proclaim the truth of who Jesus was because, inspired by the Holy Spirit, they were now able to understand what had happened to them during Jesus’ last few years. We all have established our personal walls seeking to keep out people, thoughts, and memories that trouble us. We identify with the disciples hiding behind locked doors. We fear some kind of invasion, painful memories, or our own un-forgiving nature; out of these fears, we remain hidden from ourselves and others, which only leads us to personal anxie-ty. The same Holy Spirit who called the first disciples calls us to re-imagine our past and our fears in the light of who Je-sus is calling us to be. We are called to be people of courage and understanding, building bridges in the world instead of walls. “A Christian without memory is not a true Christian but only halfway there: a man or a woman, a prisoner of the moment, who doesn’t know how to treasure his or her history, doesn’t know how to read it and live it as salvation history. With the help of the Holy Spirit, however, we are able to interpret interior inspirations and life events in light of Jesus’ words. And thus, within us grows the knowledge of memory, knowledge of the heart, which is a gift of the Spirit.” Pope Francis Homily, 8 June 2014
