Inspirational Night at

Mapleton Community Library

Congratulations Library volunteers. The inspirational presentations last Friday night was fabulous. From the moment I stepped in the Library, I felt welcomed and comfortable. Unusual pesto, spicy mulled wine complimented the smiles and kind words from the volunteers.

Bring a new resident, I was so impressed. The professional MC, Nita thanked Phillipa for organising the night. I also thank Phillipa.

I know little about yoga, pilates and intuition so can the Library volunteers organise a similar night. I overheard someone asking for more chair yoga—yes please.

For those of you who missed Friday night, there were four speakers [from the left] Olivia Besson, Sherrelle Dolphin, Phillipa Robertson and Angela Power. All local I understand. What special neighbours we all have in Mapleton-Flaxton.

To the Library volunteers and Phillipa and Nita—keep on making my new home so special.

Scone Time – the new social scene for seniors Local chef and former restaurateur, Martin Duncan aka Sunshine Coast Foodie launched Scone Time, his regular monthly Morning Teas for older folk in Cooroy Memorial hall in June 2018. Now an established, successful event with a strong, regular attendance Scone Time has made its way to Montville. Supported by local community groups and businesses, the event has not only reignited life into the Cooroy Memorial Hall but also helped older people feel connected to their community. Residence of Montville and surrounds can now expect the same at the Montville Village Hall. Inspired by 96-year-old UK resident Georgina, who, with no family remaining decided to involve herself with a local charity that hosted tea parties for people over the age of 75. Martin saw an opportunity to not only connect with older people, but also utilize the beautiful old venues around the Sunshine Coast to do so. “I saw an interview with Georgina and thought that surely the isolation that older people feel is a worldwide issue,” says Martin “Our beautiful region has so many community halls, that, back in the day, would have come to life on Saturday nights for dances, special events and weddings,” explains Martin. “How exciting it will be to create social experiences for our senior folk in these unique special buildings,” he adds. With Montville Coffee , Elizabeth and May, Montville Mist Spring Water & Montville Chamber of Commerce already on board, other local businesses are invited to sponsor a monthly gathering, donate their time or simply pay it forward for a guest (and carer) to attend Scone Time as a one off attendance or more. By involving local businesses it is hoped that the event will generate a positive social outcome in the community and enough income to cover its running costs to ensure its ongoing success. The next Montville Scone Time at Montville Village Hall will be at 10am on the 26th August, 2019, tickets are $10. For bookings, visit www.trybooking.com/BBDMC

Mapleton’s Curated Plate Mapleton was one of the feature events at the recent Sunshine Coast Curated Plate Festival, a new festival of gourmet food and exceptional dining experiences. Sunshine Coast Destinations reported on the evening at QCCC Mapleton’s Triballink Centre like this: In the heart of Jinibara country, Goombuckar Creations’ founder, Kerry Neill, extended a heartfelt welcome to the TribalLink Cultural Centre at Mapleton to enjoy an authentic aboriginal experience under the wandering night sky. As a traditional custodian to this beautiful patch of paradise, Kerry took 70 guests on a journey of understanding, inviting them to be immersed in legends of the Dreamtime, and stories of the Kabi Kabi people, invoking thoughtful conversation and cultural insight that left everyone with a greater feeling of belonging and awareness. Held at Triballink’s Rainforest Arena, the campsite was reproduced to reflect how a traditional campsite would have looked in times past. The yarning circle, art poles and rock art added to the authenticity of the experience, the darkness casting an ethereal warmth across the camp.

Chef Tahneeka Adams created an incredible selection of bushtucker dishes. Warragul greens, bush tomatoes, lemon myrtle, Davidson plums, wild mulberry and bunya nuts were amongst the fabulous fresh native ingredients foraged locally or grown on the property. The menu, was an explosion of native flavours; smoked kangaroo, bush tomato relish, saltbush seared scallops, bunya nut and crocodile wontons, emu root vegetable stew, and a show stopping paperbark barramundi. It was a feast to introduce everyone to a sensation of food and flavours, respecting sustainable abundance and time-honoured traditions.

In the glowing ambience of the campfire and candlelight, guests enjoyed bunya nut hibiscus cheesecake and a sumptuous grazing table of indigenous fruit and nuts that glistened like jewels amongst a lavish local cheese platter. While they ate, the Dee’rum Wan’dum (Sunrise) dance troupe performed a medley of traditional and contemporary dances to the evocative sound of the didgeridoo that filled the night air.

The yarns and storytelling continued around the campfire, marshmallows in hand, completing the evening with a sharing of friendship and newfound sense of belonging. Riches that come with an awareness of indigenous cultural diversity and connection it can bring.

BUSHFIRE SEASON

We are having plenty of cool weather at the moment so it is easy to forget about the hot summer that is just around the corner. Now is the time to prepare for the possibility of bushfires. Here are some simple things you could do * review your bushfire survival plan. Will you stay or go? Create a list of items you will take if you need to leave in a hurry * have a prominent house number. * mow your grass regularly. * have fresh batteries for torches and radios. * work out how you can charge your mobile phone etc. * clear leaves from guttering and roof. * clear vegetation away from buildings. * check generators, pumps and hoses. Do not assume a fire truck will come to your rescue. Prepare now Mapleton/Flaxton Disaster Management Team

Love cooking? Here's a hot August deal Mapleton Community Library has a hot August deal to promote its fund raising cookery book Love Cooking. Buy two or more cookery books this August and you'll pay only $20 each, $5 less than the single copy price of $25. Have you tried the soups— unusual tasty soups ... all very easy to make. Our family’s favourite is the Russian beetroot soup—looks odd but a surprise that even the children enjoyed. Thank you Library, you made my catering ‘task’ so enjoyable.
