Keynote Presentations

Friday Keynote Presentation

Dr. Punya Mishra, Michigan State University Teaching, Technology & the TPACK Framework The ability to be creative and flexible is critical in the face of a rapidly changing world. Nowhere is this more important than in teaching. Teachers operate in a complex and chaotic ecology where success depends on improvising knowledgeable answers to unanticipated problems. Technology, and its rapid rate of change, further complicates the pedagogy of teaching subject matter. In this presentation, I describe the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework as a way of thinking about teacher knowledge, technology integration, and the role of teachers' creativity. TPACK places teachers front and center as designers of curriculum, who flexibly and creatively integrate technology and pedagogical approaches to help their students understand subject matter. We will explore the meaning of creativity, particularly in contexts relevant to teaching and learning, and strategies for improving technology integration through nurturing and supporting teacher creativity.

Punya Mishra is Professor of Educational Technology at Michigan State University where he directs the Master of Arts in Educational Technology program. He (with Dr. Matthew J. Koehler) is co-chair of the SITE2011 conference and former chair of the Innovation & Technology Committee of the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education (AACTE). He is nationally and internationally recognized for his work on theoretical, cognitive and social aspects related to the design and use of computer based learning environments. He has worked extensively in the area of technology integration in teacher education which led to the development (in collaboration with

Dr. M. J. Koehler) of theTPACK framework, which has been described as being “the most significant advancement in the area of technology integration in the past 25 years.” He has received over $4 million in grants, has published over 45 articles and book chapters and has edited two books. As an award winning instructor, he teaches courses at both the masters and doctoral levels in the areas of educational technology, design, and creativity. Dr. Mishra is a gifted, creative and engaging public speaker and an accomplished visual artist and poet.

Saturday Capstone Presentation

Jhone Ebert, Chief Technology Officer, Clark County School District Thinking Beyond Boundaries: Do More with What You Have From 120,000 students to 309,000 students, how has technology supported the rapid growth in the 5th largest school district in the nation? The changing processes have and will affect every student, teacher, administrator, staff, and community member. It takes a community to support the K-12 infrastructure. Learn how you can lead your organization through the next decade by thinking beyond the boundaries.

Jhone Ebert is the Chief Technology Officer for the Clark County School District, overseeing operational and instructional technology systems for the 5th largest school district in the nation. Starting her twenty-year career in the District as a mathematics teacher, she received national recognition as the recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Secondary Mathematics Teaching in 1996. She became the District’s first Secondary Technology Coordinator after earning her Master’s Degree in Instructional Technology from UNLV. In this role, she identified funding to support CCSD’s first 1:1 laptop initiative. As the pioneering principal of CCSD’s Virtual High

School, she worked with the school staff to achieve High Achieving Status in 2006. Jhone is currently serving as the Chair of the Nevada Commission on Educational Technology, which oversees the state of Nevada's technology plan and distributes Legislative funding to school districts. She works to support the use of technology to create a level learning environment for all students.

75 Creative Teaching with Technology Dr. Punya Mishra, Michigan State University

This workshop will focus on how one can become a more creative teacher. We will explore a range of questions related to creativity including: What does it mean to be creative? How can creativity be developed and nurtured? How can we become more creative in teaching? What is the role of technology in this process? A critical part of becoming creative is being able to play—to play with ideas, with tools, and with pedagogical techniques. In this workshop, participants will engage in an interactive series of activities, with different technological tools, that will allow them to explore the meaning of creativity—how it is defined—and explore some strategies for developing, nurturing and supporting creativity, particularly in their teaching. This workshop will provide hands-on and minds-on opportunities for discussion and exploration. Issues/topics will also be illustrated with multiple examples from the world of education, psychology, and business, interspersed with games and puzzles connected to the ideas being discussed. A key part of the workshop will be helping participants develop a creative solution to a key problem of practice all instructors face.
