HOME BEFORE THE HOLIDAYS: Before taking a 10-day holiday break, the Miami University men’s basketball team returns to Millett Hall as it hosts South Carolina State Thursday. Tip time is scheduled for 7 p.m. and it will air live on ESPN+. An audio broadcast will be available on the RedHawk IMG Sports Network Tunein App. 2. BIG TIME PERFORMANCE FROM THE LINE: While it was a tough shooting night for the RedHawks in their last game against NKU on Sunday, one place where they saw enormous success was from the free throw line. Miami went 20-for-22 (90.9 percent) from the charity stripe in the contest, the first time it shot above 90 percent this season. It was the ‘Hawks best performance from the free throw line since they were 14-for-15 (93.3 percent) against Ohio on March 4, 2016. That was also the last time they shot better than 90 percent in a game. 3. COLEMAN-LANDS MAKING IMPACT: As he continues to round into form after missing the first seven games due to injury, sophomore guard Isaiah Coleman-Lands has been making an impact off the bench. Having drained eight 3-pointers in four games, he is averaging 6.5 points per contest. The team is seeing success with him back as it has outscored opponents 163-123 when Coleman-Lands is on the court. That gives him a plus-minus rating of +40 for the season. GAMEDAY CENTRAL

THURSDAY’S GAME: Before taking a 10-day holiday break, the Miami University men’s basketball team returns to Millett Hall as it hosts South Carolina State Thursday. Tip time is scheduled for 7 p.m. and it will air live on ESPN+. An audio broadcast will be available on the RedHawk IMG Sports Network Tunein App.

ABOUT SOUTH CAROLINA STATE: The Bulldogs are 2-11 on the season. They’ve played a challenging schedule this season that has featured 11 road games. In their last game on Saturday at South Carolina Upstate, they held a one-point lead with un-der two minutes to go, but were unable to hold on in an 88-84 defeat. South Carolina State’s offense runs through junior forward Damani Applewhite. He averages 19.2 points and 6.9 rebounds per game.

THE SERIES WITH SOUTH CAROLINA STATE: This is the second meeting all-time between Miami and South Carolina State. On Jan. 2, 2016, the RedHawks built a large halftime lead, but a 27-7 run in the second half allowed the Bulldogs to come away with a 71-67 victory. Geovonie McKnight led Miami with 24 points, while Eric Wash-ington finished with 16.

MIAMI VS. MEAC: The MEAC is made up of 12 Historically Black Colleges and Uni-versities (HBCU) located in states along the eastern seaboard. The only other MEAC school Miami has ever faced is Florida A&M, which it defeated 52-33 on Nov. 17, 2006. The RedHawks have never played Bethune Cookman, Coppin State, Delaware State, Howard, Maryland Eastern Shore, Morgan State, Norfolk State, North Carolina A&T, North Carolina Central or Savannah State.

UP AHEAD: The RedHawks resume play after the holiday break with their final non-conference game as they host Evansville on Sunday, Dec. 30. Tip time is 1 p.m. and it will air live on ESPN+. An audio broadcast will be available on the RedHawk IMG Sports Network Tunein App.

MIAMI UNIVERSITY, PLEASEWhen referring to Miami, please use Miami University, Miami University (Ohio) or Miami (Ohio). Please do not use Miami of Ohio, University of Miami of Ohio, etc. The latter are not the proper names for our institution. Also, in 1997, the University began using its new nickname, the RedHawks. It is one word with a capital H. Thank you.

MIAMI COLLEGE SPORTS LIVE FROM IMG COLLEGE: In its 12th year of its partnership with IMG College, the Miami College Sports Live from IMG College continues its coverage of Miami men’s basketball with a group of affiliates blanketing most of Southwest Ohio and Southeast Indiana. For all home games and a select few road games, Terry Bridge will deliver the play-by-play while former RedHawk men’s basketball player John McKenna provides the analysis. For most road games, “The Voice of the Red-Hawks” Steve Baker will deliver the play-by-play coverage, while Bridge will pro-vide color commentary. Tune in to one of Miami’s game-day affiliates: WMOH-AM 1450 (Hamilton, Ohio), WFMG-FM 101.3 (Richmond, Ind.), WONE 980 (Dayton, Ohio), MiamiRedHawks.com (Miami College Sports Live Subscription).

2018-19 MIAMI UNIVERSITY REDHAWKS MEN’S BASKETBALL 8

Having led Miami to its best perfor-mance in seven years, Jack Owens returns for his second season as the head coach of the RedHawks.

Despite being hired in April 2017, Owens quickly showed his recruit-ing prowess by bringing in six new players to join the roster and saw immediate results. He led Miami to 16 wins in 2018 and a berth in the College Basketball Invitational. It

was the ‘Hawks most victories and first postseason appearance since 2011.

Nike Sibande, one of Owens’ recruits, was named MAC Fresh-man of the Year and Honorable Mention All-MAC. Junior guard Darrian Ringo, who Owens got to transfer in from Eastern Arizona, was Third-Team All-MAC and was the only player in the nation to finish in the top 10 in both assists and steals. Another one of Owens’ recruits, forward Dalonte Brown, joined Sibande on the MAC All-Freshmen Team.

The 2018 CBI appearance continues a pattern of success for Owens as his teams have advanced to postseason play in 14 of the past 18 seasons and went on to the NCAA Tournament in 11 of the past 14 years, including four trips to the Sweet 16. He has also helped secure several top recruiting classes, produced NBA talent and developed some of the nation’s top players.Prior to joining Miami, Owens spent the past nine seasons on staff at Purdue University, three as an assistant coach and the last six as its associate head coach. During his time the Boiler-makers recorded 209 wins (23.2/year), including 27 during his final year (2016-17 season) to help Purdue win a Big Ten Regu-lar Season Championship.

In Owens’ nine seasons with Purdue, the Boilermakers made the NCAA Tournament on seven occasions, advancing to the Sweet 16 three different times.

Owens has helped produce five NBA draft picks, including AJ Hammons and Robbie Hummel and multiple professional basketball players. In 2017, he helped guide Caleb Swanigan to national attention, he was named one of five finalists for the John R. Wooden Award, given to the nation’s top player.

Owens came to Purdue after a five-season stint as an assistant at Southern Illinois. In 2003-04, Owens was part of a Southern Illinois team that went 25-5 and advanced to the NCAA Tour-nament. In the next four seasons at SIU, Owens helped guide the Salukis to three more NCAA Tournament berths, a trip to the NCAA Sweet 16, a Missouri Valley Conference title and an appearance in the National Invitation Tournament.

Head Coach Jack OwensPrior to joining SIU, Owens served as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Eastern Illinois, during the 2002-03 season, and spent the 2001-02 campaign as an assistant at Barton County Community College, which reached as high as No. 2 in the national polls during the season. Owens began his coaching career as an assistant at Howard Community College during the 2000-01 season, serving as the team’s interim head coach for a portion of the year.

The Indianapolis native began his collegiate playing career at Murray State, and played a season at Howard Community College before playing two seasons at Eastern Illinois. While at EIU, Owens averaged 11.7 points and 6.5 assists per game as a senior, earning honorable mention All-Ohio Valley Conference honors. He also served as team captain during his final cam-paign, and garnered team MVP and Outstanding Defensive Player honors. During the 1999-00 season, Owens remained a part of the Eastern Illinois program as a student assistant coach.

Owens and his wife, Kamilah, have three daughters, Alanah, Aniyah and Anyah.
