Over the past three weeks now we’ve been mak-ing our way through St. John’s Gospel, the Bread of Life Discourse (John 6: 22-59). It has been claimed that Jesus here is speaking in metaphor. But, one specially notes the realistic expressions “true” and “real” referring to the “food” and “drink” which is our Savior’s Body and Blood. Also, from the reactions of the listeners we can understand Jesus to be speaking in literal truth – How can this man give us his flesh to eat? (John 6:53) – and Jesus does not cor-rect them, as he had done previously in the case of misunderstandings.

Knowing that Jesus here is referring to the Eucharist, I humbly offer some points in order to examine your own reception of the Eucharist.

*To receive the Eucharist worthily we must examine our conscience. If we are aware that we have committed “a grave sin” we “must receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation before coming to Communion.” (CCC 1385) This is the teaching of St. Paul: “Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of profaning the Body and Blood of the Lord. Let a man examine himself, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For any one who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment upon himself.” (1 Cor 11:27-29)

*We should approach Communion humbly, which is why we echo the words of the Centurion before receiving: “Lord, I am not worthy.” (CCC 1386).

*We should observe the fast, which for us is to abstain from food or drink (except water) one hour before Communion (CCC 1387).

*We should have the proper dress and demeanor. Our “[b]odily de-meanor,” that is our gestures and clothing, “ought to convey the respect, solemnity, and joy of this moment when Christ becomes our guest” (CCC 1387).

*Attend Mass. “The Church obliges the faithful to take part in the Di-vine Liturgy on Sundays and feast days and, prepared by the Sacrament of Reconciliation, to receive the Eucharist at least once a year, if possible dur-ing the Easter season. But the Church strongly encourages the faithful to receive the holy Eucharist on Sundays and feast days, or more often still, even daily. (CCC 1389)

Once one is doing the minimum that is required, why not do more? What about one more Mass each week?

May the Body and Blood of our Lord, Jesus Christ guard our souls into everlasting life. Amen.

STEWARDSHIP Stewardship Reflection for August 19, 2018 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“Watch carefully then how you live, not as foolish per-sons but as wise…” (Ephesians 5:15) A wise Steward recognizes that all we have and all we are comes from God. A wise Steward thanks God continually throughout the day for all His many blessings. A wise Steward realizes that God has blessed us for a reason and that He wants us to help Him build His kingdom of earth. This week, as our Gospel continues to focus on Jesus as the Bread of Life, we extend our gratitude to those who serve as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, helping to distribute the Body of Christ at Holy Mass. EMHC are scheduled for the Mass time/s of their preference. They have a deep faith in the True Presence of our Lord in the Eucha-rist, and believe that God has called them to provide this great gift to others during the reception of Holy Communion.

1. This year we are going to have three different "open registration times" in which we invite you (and your families) to come and meet us to register and to gather the important information we have for you. This will be a great way for you to gather the needed information and material for the year, and will give us an opportunity to get to know each oth-er! Below are the options for which we are asking that you drop in at some point during the block of time to register and meet with us briefly (light re-freshments will be provided)! Sunday, August 26, 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. in Marian Hall

Monday, August 27, 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. in Marian Hall

Wednesday, August 29, 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. in Marian Hall

*If you are unable to make it to any of these times, please let us know!

2. The 2018-19 schedule is on the IHM website(ihmcatholicparish.org). Like last year, if you have a child in Gr. K-6, you will meet once a month with your family as part of the "Family Formation" program. Those who are in Gr. 7-11 will meet 3 times per month by grade level! For those who have children entering a Sacramental year (2nd graders: First Communion and Reconciliation and 10th and 11th grade: Confirmation) there will be additional information/meeting times provided at registration!

As always, know that it is our joy to work alongside you all in the formation of your family's faith life. Please let us know if there is anything you are curi-ous about, or need from us in this process!

God Bless,

RESPECT LIFE/SOCIAL JUSTICE

Luke House Needs You!

IHM has committed to serving a meal at Luke House Community Meal Program on the near east side every 4th Wednes-day of the month. In this ministry, we serve a meal to 80-150 people in need. All food and service is provided by the members of IHM. Currently, we are in need of people to join

us monthly. We have roles where you provide a small portion of the meal and/or help with the serv-ing the meal. If you provide food, you would just need to bring it to the parish within 24 hours of our Luke House night. No need to bring to Luke House directly. If you would like to help serve the meal, the approximate time is 5:30-7 p.m. (meal includ-ed) Currently, we are in need of people to help pre-pare a set menu item that is our main dish that serves 8-12 people. Please contact Don and Cathy Bernards at 226-9932 or [email protected] to find out more information or volunteer with Luke House.

NOTE: Are you missing some of your Luke House pans? Please come and retrieve them from the base-ment drop off spot. We have accumulated quite a collection and we would appreciate it if you could claim what is yours. Thank you!! 40 Days for Life—Madison

From September 26 through November 4, you’re invited to join other Christians for 40 Days for Life – 40 days of prayer and fasting for an end to abortion. You’re also invited to stand and peacefully pray dur-ing a 40-day vigil in the public right-of-way outside Planned Parenthood, 3706 Orin Rd., Madison, WI, and also to help spread the word about this im-portant community outreach. Once again this year, IHM will have a set weekly 2-hour time to gather and pray as a parish group. Watch the bulletin for more information!

The Miracle of the Snow

Illustration: The Miracle of the Snow, 1580, Jacopo Zucchi, The Vatican Picture Gallery

On Aug 5 of every year a special ceremony takes place in Rome, in the oldest church dedicated in the West to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Inside the Basilica of Santa Ma-ria Maggiore, white flower petals fall from the ceiling to commemorate the miracle that reputedly took place in the fourth century, when Liberius was pope and a wealthy childless couple sought consolation and guid-ance from Our Lady. According to the legend, John the Patrician and his wife prayed to Mary for advice on how to dispose of their estate. The Madonna appeared to them in a dream and told them to build a church in her honor and that snow would appear to mark the spot on which the church should be built. The next morning, the couple ran to tell their dream to Pope Liberius. Amazingly, he revealed to them that he had the same dream. When they reached the summit of the hill they found snow glistening and deposited in the shape of a basilica. Pictured here, Pope Liberius, assisted by a dea-con, takes a hoe and drives it through the bed of snow. John the Patrician kneels, while his wife and an assem-bly of ecclesiastics stand witness to this snowfall in summer. Hovering above them appears the Virgin Mary with her arm extended, over the miraculous scene. The Basilica was constructed on this very spot and is known as Santa Maria Maggiore (St. Mary Major).

Because of the number of requests we receive, our parish policy is as follows: Masses for a specific person or intention may be offered no more than 4 times per calendar year, of which one may be a weekend Mass. Mass intentions will be spaced out so they do not occur more than once within a two month period. We will do what we can to honor requests for special dates, but we are not able to guarantee their availability. We are scheduling inten-tions for 2019 at this time, and will be reserving slots throughout the year to be held for newly deceased.
