RANKING WATCH: TOP SPOT ON THE LINE IN PARIS

In Paris, Karolina Pliskova, Petra Kvitova, Kiki Bertens and Angelique Kerber will have a chance to overtake Naomi Osaka atop the WTA

Rankings. Here is a look at the scenarios:

• Osaka can secure the No.1 ranking outright by reaching the final, regardless of any other results

• Pliskova needs to reach the final to have a chance at claiming top spot. Should Osaka reach SF or if Bertens or Kvitova also

make the final, Pliskova would have to win the title.

• Bertens also needs to reach the final to have a chance at claiming No.1. Should Osaka reach R16 or if Bertens faces Ka.Pliskova

or Kvitova, she would need to win the title.

• Kvitova needs to win the title with Osaka not reaching SF

• Kerber needs to win the title with Osaka not reaching QF and with Ka.Pliskova not reaching the final

DEFENDING A MAJOR IS A DIFFICULT TASK

There have been 24 title defenses at Wimbledon, 22 at the US Open, 21 at the Australian Open, and 11 at Roland Garros (post-1945):

• 22 different women have successfully defended a Grand Slam singles title at least once in their careers

• 10 different women have successfully defended two or more different Grand Slams

• Only five women – Maureen Connolly, Margaret Court, Stefanie Graf, Monica Seles and Serena Williams – have defended three or

more different majors

• Stefanie Graf is the only woman to have defended at all four of the majors more than once; in fact she achieved the amazing feat

at least twice at each Grand Slam

• Five players in the Open Era have defended their title at Roland Garros: Court, Evert, Graf, Seles and most recently Henin (2005-

07)

• Six defending champions have lost in the opening round of their title defense: Graf (1994 Wimbledon), Capriati (2003 Australian

Open), Myskina (2005 Roland Garros), Kuznetsova (2005 US Open), Kerber (2017 US Open) and Ostapenko (2018 Roland Garros)
