613 • The number of days it had been since Penn last played a competitive intercollegiate game when they took the floor November 10 in Tallahassee . In its last game, Penn defeated Columbia 85-65 at The Palestra on March 7, 2020—and what a game it was. • Spinoso had a perfect night from the field, going 5-of-5 including a pair of three-pointers en route to 12 points, a season/career best .

• Sophomore Clark Slajchert hit double figures in the scoring column for the third time in four games, dropping 11 .

• Lorca-Lloyd matched his career high with six points and also had six rebounds .

• Martz saw his first game action of 2021-22 after missing the first three due to injury; he had five points, four rebounds and two blocked shots in 12 minutes of action .

• Freshman Gus Larson scored his first collegiate point .

Notemeal From Bucknell• Dingle once again led Penn in scoring, with 24 points . He has hit the 20-point mark in each of the first three games this season .   • Dingle took 23 shots, tied for the most in a single game by a Penn player in the Steve Donahue coaching era .   • Williams had 17 points and eight rebounds in 30 minutes on Sunday; after scoring just two points in the first three halves of the season, Williams—who is playing his first regular-season games since being a high-schooler in 2016—has 25 over Penn’s last three halves.

Notemeal From Mason• Dingle led Penn with 20 points, giving him 43 in two games .   • Charles had his second double-figure scoring game in a row, as well, with 18 points .   • In a homecoming game for him—he’s from D .C . and attended Sidwell Friends—Williams scored eight second-half points including a pair of triples and led Penn with six rebounds .

Notemeal From FSU• This was the first meeting between the Quakers and the Seminoles in men’s basketball .

• Among the players who scored their first collegiate points on Wednesday night: senior Williams (2), junior Charles (12), sophomores Slajchert (12) and Andrew Laczkowski (2), and freshmen Spinoso (4) and George Smith (1) .   • Dingle led the Quakers with 23 points, including a 5-of-8 performance from three-point land .

• Charles knocked down four treys in his collegiate debut, three of them in the first half . • Slajchert went a perfect 8-of-8 at the foul line, the best performance by a Penn player at the charity stripe in the Donahue era; the previous best of 6-for-6 had happened four times.

2021-22 Schedule Notes• Penn opened its season with an opponent never faced in the program’s long history: Florida State . The Quakers were looking for their first win on an ACC court since 2001 but fell, 105-70 .

• Penn also will make its first-ever trip to the state of Arkansas this season, meeting the Razorbacks in Fayetteville on the Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend . The last time the Quakers played an SEC team on the road, of course, they won (81-80 at Alabama to open the 2019-20 season) .

• Penn’s November 16 home opener against Lafayette—the back half of a women’s/men’s doubleheader—pitted Coach Donahue against Fran O’Hanlon, with whom he shared bench space when they were assistant coaches together at Penn in the 1990s .

• Penn played in an exempt event for the fourth straight year, traveling to Conway, S .C . for the Myrtle Beach Invitational the weekend before Thanksgiving . The Quakers fell to eventual tournament champion Utah State in double overtime on the first day, 87-79; fell to Davidson in a consolation semifinal, 72-60; then beat Old Dominion in the seventh-place game, 71-63 .

• Penn will play all four of its Big 5 games over an 11-day span, starting on December 1 when Villanova comes to The Palestra and finishing at La Salle on December 11 . For the first time in Big 5 history, Penn will play three of its city series games on the road .

• For just the third time in program history, Penn’s game with Saint Joseph’s will be played on Hawk Hill . The first two came in 1991 and 1995 . Every game since the 1996-97 season had been played in The Palestra .

Goodbye, Ivy WeekendsWell, not completely. However, after literally decades of the old Friday/Saturday schedule the Ivy League has made significant changes to the conference schedule for the 2021-22 season. Among the changes:

• The conference season has moved from an eight-week to a 10-week schedule (starting on January 2) .

• The Ivy’s signature back-to-back weekends will be featured three times during the 10 weeks of conference play .

• There will be one other two-game weekend—the teams playing the Saturday and Monday of MLK Weekend—and then six single-game weekends .

• Each team will conclude the regular season with a single-game weekend contest against its travel partner, with the first game against the travel partner coming on MLK Day .

#IvyMadness, Year 4 (Rd. 3)After two cancellations, in 2020 and 2021, the fourth edition of the Ivy League Tournament will take place March 12-13 at Harvard’s Lavietes Pavilion . The top four regular-season finishers will descend upon Cambridge, Mass ., for the semifinals on Saturday, with the final to determine the League’s NCAA Tournament bid on Sunday . All three games will air on the ESPN family of networks . The first two Ivy League Tournaments, in 2017 and 2018, were hosted by Penn at the historic Palestra.

Ivy League Preseason PollPenn was picked to finish fourth in the Ivy League’s Preseason Media Poll, which came from the votes of two members of each school’s media contingent and one national voter .2021-22 Ivy preseason media poll(first-place votes in parentheses) 1. Steve Donahue was introduced as the John R . Rockwell Head Coach of Men’s Basketball on March 17, 2015 as the 20th head coach in program history .

Donahue is the only person in Ivy League history to lead two different programs to conference championships, Cornell (2008, 2009, 2010) and Penn (2018) . In addition, he is one of just seven coaches in Ancient Eight history to win 100 conference games—he finished the 2019-20 season with 116 total—and the only one among those seven to do it at two different schools (78 at Cornell, 38 at Penn)

Donahue’s third year at Penn was one of the most memorable in the program’s illustrious history . The Quakers went 24-9 overall, the most wins since the 2001-02 team had 25 . In Ivy League play, Penn went 12-2 during the regular season and clinched a share of its first Ancient Eight title since 2006-07 . Following the regular season, the Red and Blue defeated Yale and then co-champion Harvard in the Ivy League Tournament to earn the program’s first NCAA Tournament bid since 2007 . The Quakers traveled to Wichita, Kan ., where they fell to top-seeded Kansas, 76-60 .

After the season, Donahue was named Ivy League Coach of the Year, NABC District 13 Coach of the Year, and ECAC Coach of the Year .

The Quakers followed that up by going a perfect 4-0 against their Philadelphia Big 5 foes in 2018-19, including a 78-75 win over No . 17 Villanova that snapped the Wildcats’ record 25-game win streak in Big 5 play . It was the first time Penn went 4-0 in Big 5 play since 2001-02 and just the second time since 1973-74 .

Donahue’s hiring marked a return to Penn for the Delaware County native; he was an assistant coach for the Quakers under Fran Dunphy from 1990-91 until 1999-2000 . During that 10-year span, Penn won six Ivy League titles—including four separate undefeated conference campaigns—and compiled a 182-91 overall record that included a 114-26 mark in Ivy play .

Donahue left Penn to become head coach at Cornell ahead of the 2000-01 season . He stayed in Ithaca for 10 years, gradually building the Big Red program up until the table was set for a three-year run that included a trio of Ivy League titles; a 72-21 overall record that included a 38-4 Ivy mark; and three NCAA Tournament appearances that included a run to the Sweet 16 in 2010 . Donahue was the Clair Bee National Coach of the Year and National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) District 4 Coach of the Year in 2009-10; and the NABC District 4 Coach of the Year and United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) District II Coach of the Year in 2007-08, when his team went 14-0 in Ivy League play to become just the third program in Ancient Eight history to achieve an unbeaten conference season (also Penn and Princeton) .

While at Cornell, Donahue coached and/or recruited seven of the school’s top 13 all-time leading scorers; two Ivy League Player of the Year selections; two Ivy League Rookie of the Year selections; eight NABC All-District selections; six Academic All-District players; and two Academic All-Americans .

Following that Sweet 16 campaign, Donahue left Cornell to become head coach at Boston College . He spent four years at The Heights, going 21-13 his first season and getting the Eagles to the NIT . In 2012-13, Olivier Hanlan was the consensus ACC Rookie of the Year .

Prior to his arrival at Penn for the 1990-91 season, Donahue was an assistant under legendary coach Herb Magee at Philadelphia University for two seasons and helped the Rams to a pair of 20-win seasons and the NCAA Division II Tournament . Before that, Donahue was as an assistant for current Lafayette head coach Fran O’Hanlon at Monsignor Bonner High School, helping guide Bonner to a Catholic League title . He began his coaching career at Springfield (Pa .) HS .

A 1984 Ursinus College graduate, Donahue was a four-year letter man in basketball and baseball for the Bears and captain of the basketball team as a senior . His freshman season, Donahue helped the hoops team finish 23-8 and advance to the NCAA Division III Tournament semifinal round . His sophomore year, the Bears were NCAA quarterfinalists .

Donahue and his wife, Pamela, have four children: Taylor, Matthew, Katie and Jack .

Now in his seventh year and sixth season as the John R. Rockwell Head Coach of the University of Pennsylvania men’s basketball program, these are the five core values that Steve Donahue has established for the players, coaches and staff affiliated with the program that are under his stewardship.

PENN WHEN...PENN WHEN...

Twos, Threes, and Frees

In a Philadelphia Daily News article published in September 2015, Coach Donahue explained his offensive philosophy thusly: “I want to get a layup or a dunk. When I’m attacking the basket, I ask my guys, ‘Are you 95 percent certain that you’re going to make this or get fouled?’ If they’re not, there are mechanisms in place to find my second thing: a standstill, in-rhythm three. The third thing is a post-up with two feet in the lane, one on one. If you get that, great; if not, it should be kicked. So everything we do evolves from that.”

With that in mind, we decided to chart the number of two-point field-goal attempts, three-point field-goal attempts, and foul shots that Penn has taken this season as well as the field-goal breakdown throughout Donahue’s career as head coach.

2021-22 Percentages (467 FG) SD era (8,923) 2019-20 (1,625) 2018-19 (1,810) 2017-18 (1,949)2-point FG attempts: 260 (55.7%) 2FG: 5,060 (56.7) 2FG: 901 (55.4) 2FG: 1,007 (55.6) 2FG: 1,118 (57.4)3-point FG attempts: 207 (44.3%) 3FG: 3,863 (43.3) 3FG: 724 (44.6) 3FG: 803 (44.4) 3FG: 831 (42.6)

FAIRFAX, Va. — The first half was slow to start, but once the host Patriots got going Penn was helpless to stop them . GMU scored the game’s first seven points, and then after Dingle finally got the Quakers on the board Mason reeled off another seven in a row for a 14-2 lead that was attained in just 3:12 of game time . That lead gradually grew to 17, at 35-18, before a modest six-point Penn run got the Quakers within 11 . Mason responded with the next eight points, the lead bulging to 19 when D’Shawn Schwartz hit the Patriots’ seventh three-pointer of the half . Down 16 at the break, the Quakers needed a good start to the second half, but instead it was Mason who kept things rolling . The hosts were up 54-32 out of the first media timeout .

Two Quick Notes...• Penn reached double figures in three-point baskets with 11 .

• In a homecoming game for him, senior Jelani Williams scored eight points including a pair of three-pointers .

LEWISBURG, Pa. — This was a back-and-forth affair for most of the day at the Sojka Pavilion, but Jordan Dingle was the difference . With the Quakers down 58-56, he scored all of the point in an 8-2 Penn run that gave the Red and Blue a 64-60 lead . Both teams had looks and chances over the next 90 seconds, but the Quakers had a pair of shots blocked and Bucknell missed four three-point attempts . Jelani Williams backed down his Bison defender and scored in traffic to put the guests up six at 66-60 with under a minute remaining . Over the final minute of play, Penn knocked down 5-of-6 free throws to keep the advantage at six (71-65) . Bucknell hit a trey with nine seconds left to pull within three before Slajchert hit one of two free throws to make it a two-possession game and effectively seal the deal .

Two Quick Notes...• Penn won for the first time in 617 days .

• Sophomore Jordan Dingle took 23 shots, tied for the most by a Penn player in a game in the Donahue era .

Nov. 18, 2021

CONWAY, S.C. — With the game tied late in regulation, Lucas Monroe made a big play on the defensive end . With an Aggie backing him down, Monroe blocked the shot and grabbed the loose ball as Penn took a timeout . However, Jordan Dingle’s game-winning three-point attempt as time expired rimmed out . With less than 30 seconds left in OT, Max Martz knocked down a three-pointer that gave the Quakers a 74-73 lead . Upon further review, it was changed to a two-point basket that left the game tied at 73 . After the Quakers made a stop, Monroe grabbed a defensive rebound and his fadeaway jumper as time expired fell off . USU scored the first four points of the second OT before a pair for free throws from Dingle broke the ice for the Quakers . However, the Aggies held Penn without a field goal for the final 1:44 to pull away .

Two Quick Notes...• This was Penn’s first multi-overtime game since its 104-99, 4OT win at Monmouth on November 25, 2017 .

• Sophomore Jordan Dingle had the first 30-point game by a Penn player since AJ Brodeur dropped 33 on Saint Joseph’s on January 18, 2020 .

The Wildcats got a three-pointer late in the period, though, and went into the locker room up 32-29 . Dingle opened the second-half scoring to make it 32-31, but Davidson’s next three baskets came from long-distance, the third starting a 10-0 Wildcats run that expanded their lead to 48-36 . Nov. 21, 2021

CONWAY, S.C. — The Quakers never trailed in this game and were tied just once by the Monarchs . That came at 9-9, but then the Quakers went on a 15-5 run and never looked back . It looked like Penn would put it away with a little more than six minutes left in regulation, Michael Moshkovitz and Jonah Charles hitting three-pointers that spurred a 13-5 run and put the Quakers in front, 64-48 . However, the Monarchs scored eight points in less than a minute to get back into it and then replied to another Charles triple with five more points . The 13-3 run got ODU within six, 67-61 . Jelani Williams missed a three-pointer but Max Martz got the offensive rebound, allowing the Quakers to burn some more clock which they did before Jordan Dingle was fouled . He made both free throws to make it an eight-point game, and that proved to be enough as the Monarchs could only make up with one bucket .

Two Quick Notes...• Penn had a season-high 19 assists on its 25 baskets .

• Freshman Nick Spinoso made his first collegiate start and finished with 10 points and seven rebounds, a season/career best

Thus, in the NCAA’s eyes, Penn’s record that year is 28-0—making them the only “undefeated” team in history to play in the NCAA Tournament but not win it . (There have been undefeated teams that did NOT play in the NCAA Tournament, most notably Kentucky in 1953-54 and N .C . State in 1972-73 .)

• Penn is one of just two teams to defeat the University of North Carolina in an NCAA Tournament game played in the state of North Carolina? On March 11, 1979, the ninth-seeded Quakers defeated the top-seeded Tar Heels, 72-71, in an East Regional second-round game played at Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh . (That day is known by fans on Tobacco Road as “Black Sunday,” as second-seeded Duke also lost at Reynolds, to St . John’s .) UNC’s only other loss in its 35 other in-state NCAA Tournament games came on March 18, 2018, an 86-65 loss to Texas A&M .

• Penn holds the second-longest conference winning streak in NCAA Division I history? The Quakers won 48 straight Ivy League games from 1992-96, including three straight 14-0 seasons in 1992-93, 1993-94 and 1994-95 . The overall record for conference wins is held by UCLA, which won 50 straight Pac-8 games from 1971-74 .

• Penn’s 1919-20 and 1920-21 teams were considered national champions? The 1919-20 Quakers went 20-0 during the regular season, clinching the EIL title with a four-overtime win over Princeton (tied for the most OTs played in program history) . Penn then met the Western champion, the University of Chicago, in a best-of-three series to determine the national champion and won the series 2-1 . The 1920-21 team went 21-2 overall, the only losses coming by a point at Cornell and by two points vs . Penn State . Both of those Quakers teams were retroactively named national champion by the Helms Athletic Foundation .

• Penn’s home court, The Palestra, has hosted 48 NCAA Men’s Tournament games? The first were the East Regional in the tournament’s first year, 1939 . The most recent took place in 1984, when Penn hosted an opening-round tripleheader . The Palestra also hosted the last Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) national championship game, in 1982, as Rutgers beat Texas, 83-77. The following year, the NCAA took full control of the women’s basketball national championship.

• Three former Penn players are currently Division I head coaches? They are Matt Langel (Colgate), Fran McCaffery (Iowa), and Andrew Toole (Robert Morris) .

• Hall of Fame coach Chuck Daly was once the head coach at Penn? Before he won a pair of NBA titles as head coach of the Detroit Pistons in 1989 and 1990, and before he headed up the “Dream Team” at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Daly spent six years at the Quaker helm, going 125-38 (including a 74-10 Ivy League mark) and winning four Ivy titles .

• When Penn beat Delaware State on December 27, 2017, the Quakers set an NCAA Division 1 record? Penn had 10 different players hit three-pointers in the 105-52 win at The Palestra, breaking the previous mark of nine set three times, first by Dartmouth in 1993 and most recently by Michigan in 2008 .

Penn is the most recent Ivy League team to reach the Final Four; the Quakers did it in 1979.
