MARCH West Richmond Church of the Brethren
Lent is a time for restoring balance to our
lives. The Eskimos practice balance as they
venture into freezing Arctic waters in little
boats. If you’ve ever paddled a kayak, you
know how easy they are to tip. Thankfully,
kayaks are just as easy to turn back upright.
That isn’t a bad image for Lent — or for life
as a whole. Whatever spiritual disciplines we
adopt, if we succumb to temptation, it’s no
biggie. One of the lessons of Lent is that, as
long as we’re traveling light, it takes only a
quick twist of the paddle to right us. That
paddle twist might take the form of a quick
but heartfelt prayer: “Jesus, set me straight
again!” Or it might mean some extra time
set aside for quiet meditation with God.
Don’t get worried if your spiritual discipline
fails now and then. Just let Jesus help you get
upright once more, and keep paddling!

Our children/youth
donated 62 pounds of
food to the Lamb’s Basket this
month, compared to 50 pounds of
food donated by our adults. With a
total of 112 pounds of food donated
in February, we increased our
donations by 32% over the last
month. Well done, West Richmond!
Congratulations to our children and
youth for their generosity to our
neighbors in need.

[God] who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness
(2nd Corinthians 9:10 NRSV).
A bout now I get feeling excited about gardening. Over the course of my lifetime, gardening has brought great joy. I admit, though, gardening where we currently live is a
bit of a challenge. But we haven’t given up. I will plant tomatoes and green beans anyway. Judith will plant different greens from seeds she has mailed to her from Nigeria. We look forward to getting our hands dirty. How about you? It’s great to get out and plant vegetables and flowers. It is rewarding.
H ave you considered planting a spiritual garden this spring? Don’t forget to plant at least three rows of peas, four rows of squash, four rows of lettuce, three rows of turnips, and
two rows of thyme. Why? Read below:
Plant three rows of peas Peace of mind Peace of heart Peace of soul
Plant four rows of squash Squash gossip
Squash indifference Squash grumbling Squash selfishness
Plant four rows of lettuce Lettuce be faithful
Lettuce be kind Lettuce be obedient
Lettuce us love one another
You got to have three rows of turnips Turnip for meetings Turnip for service
Turnip to help one another
And finally, two rows of Thyme Thyme for God
Thyme for each other

The Love in our hearts wasn't put there to stay… Love isn't Love ‘til you give it away
The children and I are celebrating this season of Lent by participating in a period of "sacrifice", our hope being that we will honor the One who sacrificed everything for us.
We have a "sacrifice sack" and beginning on Wednesday, February 26th (the first day of Lent) each day of this Lenten Season we will place an item of ours in our sack (items might include a toy that we no longer play with, or a piece of clothing we no longer wear, or maybe an extra snack that we want to share). The children and I will bring our filled sacks to church on Easter Sunday, they will be a center piece of our worship that day, and we will thank God for teaching us the discipline of sacrifice.
Then on Saturday, April 18th I will be taking our items from our "sacrifice sacks" to an underserved community in South Richmond (a mobile home community off of Jefferson Davis Highway) to participate in a give-away for families in the area.
Please be in prayer for the children and I as we seek to be the hands and heart of Jesus in our community and beyond.

During the five Sundays of Lent and Palm Sunday, we will be inviting you to DENY yourself and TAKE UP the cross and follow Jesus. We are aware of the increasing violence once again in Nigeria against our brothers and sisters in Christ. The Executive Committee recommends that we TAKE UP a special offering in response to their plight through the Nigeria Crisis Fund of the Church of the Brethren Global Missions. Place checks in the Offering Plates made out to the church but ear marked “Nigeria Crisis Fund”. Cash will need to be separate from “loose cash” so that it will not go into the General Budget. On Palm Sunday we will conclude with a Special Offering for the horrific and desperate situations Christians find in Northern Nigeria.

“All Beautiful the March of Days”
SPRING BEGINS
All beautiful the march of days, as seasons come and go; the Hand that shaped the rose hath wrought the crystal of the snow; hath sent the hoary frost of heav’n, the flowing waters sealed, and laid a silent loveliness on hill and wood and field. …
O Thou from whose unfathomed law the year in beauty flows, Thyself the vision passing by in crystal and in rose, day unto day doth utter speech, and night to night proclaim, in ever changing words of light, the wonder of Thy Name.

Every organization has them. Those members who go above and beyond expectations. Those who take on the
tasks that others would not or could not. Those who volunteer their services for many years without recognition.
Sandi Davis is one of those people at West Richmond COB.
Sandi recently stepped down from her volunteer position as treasurer for Hilltop Preschool, a position she has
held for over 25 years. Sandi began serving as Hilltop’s treasurer shortly after West Richmond officially assumed
responsibility for the preschool with the 1992 school year. For all those years, Sandi performed payroll duties,
issuing checks and calculating deductions, accounting for and depositing tuition fees, paying the bills and taxes,
helping to develop an annual preschool budget, preparing the school’s monthly financial statements and all the
other tasks associated with Hilltop’s financial operations.
The Hilltop Preschool staff and board are grateful for Sandi’s many years of dedicated service and appreciate her
careful attention to the myriad details of the position. She quietly and competently went about her work, day in
and day out, putting her skills and abilities to work for the preschool. She kept at it even when the work was
challenging, as it was in the early years when the school struggled with low enrollment and when fundraising events
were annual activities -- and often a necessity for the school’s financial well-being.
Sandi’s longtime service as the preschool treasurer speaks to her dedicated commitment to Hilltop as a ministry of
the West Richmond COB. When you next see Sandi – in between her service trips with Brethren Disaster
Ministries – give her your thanks for the invaluable service she so faithfully carried out for Hilltop and West
Richmond over so many years.
Hilltop’s financial affairs will remain in good hands, thanks to Shawn Baker who has agreed to
serve as treasurer. The Hilltop staff and board are grateful for Shawn’s willingness to help.
For these gifts of service, thanks be to God!
Ann Andrus, Hilltop Preschool Board Chair
We would like to acknowledge a letter with an enclosed $800.00 check
from the estate of Myron Shipman Miller. The letter in part states:
“My father was a long-time member of the West Richmond Church of the
Brethren and served in many ways over the years including as moderator,
church board chair, Sunday school teacher and with the organization of
the Hilltop Preschool. Recently tucked inside a book of prayers, my sister
found a typewritten note (with my father’s familiar ALL CAPITAL
LETTER printed additions) which appears to have been prepared for a
church business meeting. His note states that recently he had been
thinking about the congregation’s efforts to define a mission and project
“A Vision”. On the reverse side of the note are printed the words,
MISSION+VISION and VISION+MISSION over and over. Given this little
peak into my fathers thoughts about the church, its mission and its vision,
I feel he would be pleased to have his gift placed in the established fund
for Visioning Initiatives.”
Sincerely,
Karen M. Fallon
