GETTING TO AND FROM CAMPUSMacquarie's campus is located just 15 kilometres from Sydney's city centre. Once you have arrived, you will discover that Sydney's public transport system is safe, efficient and easy to use. Macquarie University even has its own train station, with a new Metro Line. There will be a train leaving every 4 minutes in peak times and no timetable will be needed - you can just turn up and go. The train line connects to Chatswood Station, and from there you can changeover to the city stations (Wynyard, Town Hall and Central). Bus routes also connect the campus to popular Sydney destinations including world-famous Bondi Beach, Sydney Opera House and Sydney Town Hall.

Regarded by the Australian Council of Learned Academies (ACOLA) as the most innovative research pathway model, the Master of Research (MRes) prepares you to complete a PhD in three years – well short of the national average.

PROGRAM STRUCTUREThe two-year course is available in all of Macquarie’s research areas, and, subject to academic approval, allows you to construct a course relevant to your specific interests.

In the first year, you’ll undertake advanced coursework units, while during the second year you’ll specialise in research preparation and focus on a specific research topic. You are required to submit a thesis of 20,000 words for completion.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTSThis course requires a bachelor degree from a recognised institution with a minimum overall GPA of 4.38 on a 7 point scale and GPA of 5.25 at 300 level,although some disciplines may have extra admission requirements.

If you hold an honours or masters degree, you may apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) (the equivalent of Year 1). This may allow you to complete the Master of Research in less than two years. Upon successful completion, you may be eligible to progress to one of Macquarie’s research courses: the Master of Philosophy or the Doctor of Philosophy.

Undergraduate academic entry requirementsWHAT QUALIFICATIONS DO YOU NEED?

UNDERGRADUATEFor direct admission into an undergraduate (bachelor) course, you will need one of the following qualifications:

• a recognised high school qualification or university entrance exam – see the following page for a selection of accepted qualifications

• a recognised university foundation course – we accept foundation courses from most Australian universities, as well as from some approved international providers

• a recognised two or three year diploma deemed equivalent to Australian diploma or advanced diploma level

• at least one year of a university degree from a recognised institution deemed equivalent to Australian bachelor or master degree level

GLOBALGCE A-Levels

Scores for the UK and international versions of the General Certificate of Education Advanced Level Examinations (GCE A-Levels) are calculated based on the aggregate of the three best A-level subjects using the following conversions: A* = 6, A = 5, B = 4, C = 3, D = 2, E = 1. At least two subjects must have been taken in the same academic year, and the third may be from the preceding or following academic year.

Both UK and international versions of A-levels are calculated using this table, including those administered by Cambridge International Examinations (CIE), Pearson Education International (Edexcel), and Oxford International AQA Examinations. A-Levels for Singapore and Sri Lanka are assessed using different tables.

GLOBALIB

Scores for the International Baccalaureate (IB) are calculated based on the final aggregate result for 6 subjects, including any bonus points from Theory of Knowledge subject and Extended Essay. This must include one subject from each of Groups 1-5 (Language & Literature; Language Acquisition; Individuals and Societies; Sciences; and Mathematics), and a sixth subject from either Group 6 (Arts) or a second selection from Groups 1-5. A minimum of 3 subjects must be completed at Higher Level (HL), with the remainder at Standard Level (SL).

Scores for the Australian High School Certificate (HSC) from New South Wales (or equivalent qualifications from other state boards) are based on the Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR).

Scores for Australian Foundation programs recognised by Macquarie University are calculated based on the overall final result out of 10.0 or by converting percentage marks to a 10-point scale. Scores are based on the final Chinese National Entrance Examination (Gao Kao) score out of 750. Total scores and requirements are different for 3 provinces: Hainan, Jiangsu and Shanghai.

DENMARKDanish USSE

Scores for the Danish Upper Secondary School Examination Certificate (USSE) are based on the final examination result of the Studentereksamen (STX) or Hojere Forberedelseseksamen (HF).

EUROPEEuropean Baccalaureate

Scores for the European Baccalaureate (EB) are based on the Overall Grade for all subjects reported on the final official result certificate.

FIJI Fijian Year 13 Certificate

Scores for the Greek Vevaiosi Prosvasis (Certificate of Access) examinations are based on the General Admission Grade (out of 20) for all subjects.

HONG KONGHKDSE

Scores for the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) are calculated based on the aggregate of the five best Category A and C subjects - Category B subjects are not considered.

Category A (Senior Secondary) subjects include the 4 compulsory core subjects (Chinese, English, Liberal Studies, and Mathematics) and a choice of elective subjects. Category B subjects are Applied Learning electives, and Category C subjects are for Other Languages (French, German, Japanese, Spanish, Hindi, and Urdu).

Points for all subjects are calculated using the following score conversions: 5**/5* = 6, 5 = 5, 4 = 4, 3 = 3, 2 = 2, 1 = 1.

HUNGARYHungarian Matriculation Certificate

Scores for the Hungarian Matriculation Certificate (Gimnaziumi Errettsegi Bizonyitvany) are calculated based on the overall average grade on the examination results using the following conversions: Excellent/Very Good (Jeles) = 5, Good (Jo) = 4, Fair/Average (Kozepes) = 3, Satisfactory/Pass (Elegseges) = 2, Fail (Elegtelen) = 1.

Scores for the Singapore-Cambridge Advanced Level Examinations (Singapore A-Levels) are calculated based on the aggregate of a maximum of the three best H1 subjects, the three best H2 subjects, and best H3 subject using the following conversions: H1 subjects: A = 2.5, B = 2, C = 1.5, D = 1, E = 0.5; H2 subjects: A = 5, B = 4, C = 3, D = 2, E = 1; H3 subjects: Distinction = 2.5, Merit = 1.5, Pass = 1. SOUTH AFRICANSC

Scores for the South African National Senior Certificate (NSC) are calculated using the average grade of the best 4 examination subjects, excluding Life Orientation. Candidates must have been awarded the NSC and met the minimum requirements for admission to higher education in South Africa.

SOUTH KOREACSAT

Scores for the Korean College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT) are calculated based on the sum of the Stanine / Grades for either (a) Mathematics and the best two other subjects if the intended Macquarie degree program requires an assumed knowledge of Mathematics, or (b) the three best subjects. Only the following subjects are considered: Language Arts (Korean), English, Investigation subjects (Social Studies or Science options only), and Second Foreign Language subjects. CORE ZONEThis zone is compulsory and covers the specific disciplinary or professional requirements of the course.

COURSEA course, also called a degree, is a qualification awarded by the university upon successful completion of a particular sequence of study. Some courses, like the Bachelor of Arts or Master of Commerce, require a major or specialisation to be completed as part of the degree.

CREDIT POINTEach course requires a specified number of credit points to be completed in order to graduate. Each unit in a course is worth a certain number of credit points which reflects the amount of work required for that unit. One credit point equals around 15 hours of work, including class time.

CRICOSThe Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS) is an Australian Government register that lists all Australian education providers and their approved courses of study which can be offered to overseas students for study in Australia on a student visa.

DOUBLE DEGREESDouble degrees involve studying two complementary or completely different degrees. Double degrees increase your career flexibility and can be completed faster than two single degrees by forgoing the Flexible Zone of each degree.

FLEXIBLE ZONEThis zone provides breadth to the course and is comprised of elective units.

FOUNDATION ZONEThis zone provides the foundational knowledge needed to succeed in the course if you are coming from a different disciplinary background.

IELTSThe International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is an English language test. IELTS test scores are one form of evidence of English language proficiency accepted by Macquarie.

MAJORA major is a focused sequence of study in a particular subject area within an undergraduate course, such as the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Commerce. A major contains 8 units and you may be able to complete a double major in two different subject areas within a single degree.

PACEPACE (Professional and Community Engagement) units are practical work-integrated learning units and may include internships, special projects and domestic or overseas travel experiences.

Glossary of termsWHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?

POSTGRADUATE A postgraduate student is one who is studying a degree higher than a bachelor degree – such as a graduate certificate, graduate diploma, or master degree.

RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING (RPL)Your prior learning includes both formal qualifications and other non-formal learning such as work experience which can be assessed and recognised for admission and credit towards your Macquarie University degree. Remember to ask for RPL when you apply.

SELECTION RANKThe selection rank is the minimum score required for entry to an undergraduate course and is based on the Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR). For international students, selection ranks have been converted into equivalent scores for recognised international high school qualifications and university entrance examinations, such as the IB, GCE A-Levels, and SAT.

SESSIONA session is a division of the academic year into study periods. Macquarie has three sessions of study: Session 1 (February–June), Session 2 (July–November), and an optional intensive Session 3 (December–February).

SPECIALISATIONA specialisation is similar to a major, but offers even greater focus in a particular subject area, making up at least half of a degree's course units. Specialisations are available in both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees such as the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) and Master of Commerce. Only one specialisation may be completed within a single degree.

STUDENT VISA An authorisation permitting people to come to Australia for the primary purpose of studying, as defined by Migration Act 1958.

UNDERGRADUATEAn undergraduate student is one who is studying their first degree – known as a bachelor degree. Once you’ve been awarded your bachelor degree, you become a graduate.

UNITA unit, also known as a subject or module, is a discrete component of study within a course. It is worth a fixed number of credit points – usually 10 credit points – and full-time students typically study 4 units per session. A unit generally requires 10-15 hours of study per week, including class time.

WAMA weighted average mark (WAM) is a measure of a student's overall academic performance and is based on the average of their percentage marks for each attempted unit of study. The WAM is out of 100.
