One Wednesday morning a few weeks ago, I arrived to find the main hallway on Adirondack Medical Center’s ground floor lined with hospital beds, pressed head to toe against the wall. Thankfully, the beds were empty, clean, and headed back to the North Country Community College nursing program across town, following an uneasy year of temporary reassignment.

It was, without question, the most challenging year of my professional career. It was also, without question, the most inspiring. We never ended up needing those extra beds in the hallway. We never ended up needing to split a ventilator between two patients to keep them both breathing. We were never forced to choose which patients would keep breathing, because – at least here – COVID hospitalizations remained manageable. But it was nonetheless an exhausting fourteen months, with no letup in the evenings, or on weekends, or on holidays. It was constant, churning, high-stakes uncertainty.

As dark as some of those days were, the outpouring of community support – the gestures large and small, anonymous and overt – helped our staff feel connected and appreciated, in a time of abrupt and sustained disconnection. The word “grateful” does not even begin to cover it.

This summer, I will retire as president and CEO of Adirondack Health. It has been an honor and a privilege to be part of this organization for the past five years. And, based on what I witnessed during my time here, you (or rather, we) are in great hands.

Thank you for putting your trust in Adirondack Health.

A message from the Foundation Chair

Dear Friends,

2020 was a year none of us will ever forget. For those affiliated with Adirondack Health, we will remember with pride how our small, rural hospital was able to navigate a pandemic through nimble planning, determined leadership, exceptional care-giving staff, and a supportive community. We will be forever grateful for good friends from near and far who gave from their hearts and hands to bring light to even our darkest moments.

In February, we partnered with the Scott Hamilton CARES Foundation to raise funds through a Sk8 to Elimin8 Cancer Frozen 5K on the Oval. $25,000 of funds raised stayed local to become the seed money to create the Merrill Oncology Center Travel Fund, which will assist income-eligible cancer patients with travel expenses related to their care.

Just after the pandemic was declared, a Surfacide UV light machine, which kills germs and viruses such as COVID-19, was donated by a generous donor. Soon after that, a small army of quilters and seamstresses came to the rescue by making facemasks, N-95 shields, and surgical caps by the thousands when PPE was in severely short supply.

Then, when face shields were impossible to buy, Northwood School, in partnership with local schools, colleges and community members, began fabricating them using 3-D printers. Soon the Foundation office was flooded with an outpouring of contributions – everything from N-95 masks and Clorox wipes to 900 boxes of Girl Scout cookies and 100 pairs of sneakers for staff on their feet all day.

So many gift certificates were purchased through programs coordinated by WSLP radio and the North Country Chamber of Commerce that 350 employees received one during a week-long drawing celebration. In lieu of our annual Gala, there was a virtual alternative called Thankful & Grateful. Proceeds were shared with local businesses which normally donate Gala auction items by purchasing gift certificates (thanks to St. Agnes School for the terrific idea of giving back to those who normally give to us).

In September, a collaboration with Trudeau Institute was formed to fund the creation of an infectious disease testing center at Adirondack Medical Center. Several leadership gifts and robust community support funded the purchase of two Rheonix machines, renovation of space in the hospital’s lab department and, late in the year, funding for a Roche machine. Along the way, we welcomed back 175 donors who had given to us in the past, but not recently, and celebrated 136 who donated for the first time.

We closed 2020 with grateful hearts. Grateful our region was spared the worst of the pandemic. Grateful our hospital and staff were ready, willing and able to treat COVID-19 patients. Grateful for the role Adirondack Health played in keeping our region safe and open for business. But, most importantly, grateful for – and just a bit awestruck by – the generosity and caring of our donors. You provided a ray of light during our darkest hours and we hope you know just how truly grateful we are – thank you from our hearts.

COVID-19 has revived the world’s appreciation for our healthcare workers. When the SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) virus first made its way to the United States, Adirondack Health officials made it a top priority to provide testing to the community.

The first mobile clinic was held at Saranac Lake High School, but at the time, there was no guide on how to do things and nowhere to look for the answers. That didn’t stop our staff from stepping up.

The mobile clinics later expanded to Lake Placid, Tupper Lake, Long Lake, AuSable Forks, Keene, Vermontville and Paul Smiths. At the same time, the COVID clinic at Adirondack Medical Center was seeing droves of patients.

Mobile testing was a game-changer for our rural communites, and our healthcare heroes led the fight.

close to home.Rapid testing capabilities,

Early in the COVID-19 pandemic, it became clear that there was a pronounced need to rapidly process tests, without the delay of sending them to an external lab. Thanks to the incredibly generous donors who made this possible, Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake is now able to rapidly process nearly 1,000 COVID-19 tests every 24 hours, all in house.Read more about this project on page 18

Adirondack Health is one of the first health systems in the region to offer robotic-arm assisted total knee and total hip replacements with Stryker’s Mako System.

“We are proud to be among the first hospitals to offer this highly advanced robotic technology in our area,” said Adirondack Health President and CEO Sylvia Getman. “The addition of Mako to our orthopaedic service line further reflects our commitment to the provision of outstanding healthcare in the communities we serve.”

While the EVS team keeps Adirondack Health’s campuses in tip-top shape, Surfacide systems help provide another layer of infection control.

Surfacide systems utilizes a UV-C hard disinfection system that is effective against pathogens that regular disinfectants may miss, including C. diff, MRSA, VRE, CRE, Acinetobacter and even Coronavirus.

The surfaces of a room are bathed in light, stronger than normal UV light from the sun, from these rotating towers.

UV-C has the ability to disrupt the DNA of bacteria and viruses, killing the cells. Not only does Sur-facide make a patient room safer for the next patient, but it makes it safer for EVS staff. It is used before the EVS techs manually disinfect the room and again after, helping reduce the chances of healthcare-associated infections.

The first Surfacide system arrived at Adirondack Health in the fall of 2018. They are used in all patient rooms after discharge and every night in all perioperative areas. In 2020, the hospital just acquired a third Surfacide system through a very generous donation.

During the pandemic, hundreds of local sew-ers took to their sewing machines and made masks, N95 covers and surgical caps.

Thousands of these handmade items were collected and distrubted to Adirondack Health staff early on in the pandemic, when PPE was hard to source.

It is the generous spirit of our community, that helped our staff feel safe while treating and caring for their neighbors.

and avoid classification as taxable income. To be eligible to make a gift

to Adirondack Health using a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD),

you must be at least 70 ½ years old. The Adirondack Health Foundation

is defined as a supporting organization by the IRS, so the QCD must be

made directly to Adirondack Medical Center d.b.a. Adirondack Health (EIN

Thank you to our Stoltz Infectious Disease Testing Center Donors

One of the true blessings in 2020 was the support of our colleagues and good friends at Trudeau Institute. Adirondack Health and Trudeau Institute worked together to solve the problem of COVID-19 test result turnaround times from overwhelmed national labs. With swift and generous contributions from donors to both institutions, space was renovated in the laboratory at Adirondack Medical Center and two Rheonix PCR testing machines were installed. A Roche testing machine was installed in March of this year and now provides even greater testing capacity. We thank those who donated to provide us rapid test results to keep our community safe and our economy open for business.

A collaboration between the Girls Scouts of Southern Nevada and the Red Cross provided hundreds of boxes of Girl Scout Cookies to Adirondack Health’s door. This sweet treat was a thoughtful and delicous pick-me-up for so many of our dedicated employees.

Thank you to donors of all other things, large and smallWe were overwhelmed by the outpouring of community support in the form of in-kind gifts, including baked goods, gift certificates, hand-made N-95 face mask covers, 3-D printed face shields, surgical caps, sneakers for staff who work on their feet all day and even a box of Girl Scout cookies for every staff member. We are deeply grateful to the generous hearts and hands who supported us through a challenging year – your generosity cheered us on and gave us strength when we needed it most. We really tried to capture everyone’s name so we could thank them and honor their contribution – if we missed you, we are very sorry and hope you will let us know so we can correct our records. Please call the Foundation at 518-897-2597.

The Legacy of Harry A. Jacobs, Jr.When Harry Jacobs passed away in May of last year, the Foundation and the region lost one of our most loyal, steadfast supporters. Harry joined the Board in 2006 and served three three-year terms. He was passionate about ensuring healthcare excellence for the Adirondacks and shared his Wall Street wisdom and acumen by serving on the finance committee. He was known for his insightful questions and strong opinions, which could cause our investment advisor heart palpitations. Upon completing his board service, Harry was named the Foundation’s first trustee emeritus and invited to continue to serve on the Finance committee, which he did until age 96. In 2012, Harry was honored at the Foundation’s Gala

and presented with the inaugural Dr. Edward L. Trudeau Award. Throughout his life, Harry valued time at camp on Lake Placid – skiing in the winter and on the lake behind the wheel of the White Cloud in summer. We will fondly remember Harry for his passion, his courage, and most especially, his generosity. As a member of the Redfield Society, he included the Foundation in his will. By making a legacy gift, he made an investment in the future health and well-being of the community he so dearly loved.

Thank you, Harry, for your commitment to Adirondack Health and the region, for your loyal dedication and service, and, most especially, for your friendship.

If you would like to include the Adirondack Health Foundation in your will, please consult with your lawyer or financial advisor and consider using this sample wording for a bequest: “I hereby give the sum of $___ to the Adirondack Medical Center Foundation d.b.a. Adirondack Health Foundation, PO Box 120 Saranac Lake, NY 12983. EIN: 16-1528554.” To learn more about the Redfield Legacy Society or discuss your possible interest in making a legacy gift, please contact a member of the Foundation staff by calling 518-897-2348.

Have you considered joining the Redfield Legacy Society?

The Redfield Legacy SocietyThe Redfield Legacy Society honors those who contribute to the Adirondack Health Foundation through a bequest, trust, or other estate gift. Alexander Redfield, a lifelong Lake Placid summer resident, left a generous bequest when he died in 1980. The Redfield Legacy Society honors those who have given or have made plans for a future gift out of their desire to make a lasting impact on healthcare in the heart of the Adirondacks. Gifts of all sizes are appreciated and unless their use is restricted by the donor, will be added to the Foundation’s investments which fund vital patient care initiatives and major renovations.
