BAROLO: ALCHEMY OF A LOVE STORY

Barolo is a famous red wine, loved all around the world capable of conquering and seducing with its notes even the most refined and complicated palates. The magic of this wine began in 1806 with the love story between the Marquis of Barolo, Carlo Tancredi Falletti and a French noblewoman, Juliette Colbert de Maulévrier, a descendent of King Louis XIV finance minister.

After her marriage, Juliette Colbert de Maulévrier, moved to the Marquis of Barolo’s estate and immediately sensed that the vineyards surrounding it enjoyed a particularly auspicious and favourable position due to the soil and the microclimate that combined created the perfect environment for the Nebbiolo grape.

For this rich and precious grape, she created magnificent wine cellars to facilitate its fermentation and aging process in large fine oak barrels. According to the French tradition, she gave this noble Nebbiolo, so potent, austere and of unique flavour, the name of Barolo after its land of origin.

Barolo delights our palates still today not only for its superb taste but also for its poetry and charm, even more so for those who have the privilege of being able to taste it in its place of origin, and between one sip and another look out over the magical enchanted so full of culture, tradition and endlessly fermenting passion.

Armed with great winemaking experience, Anna and Ernesto Abbona, together with their children Valentina and Davide, present themselves as faithful interpreters of the native vineyards and their locations, respecting them and rigorously preserving the typical qualities thanks to the vinification of the grapes that come from their own vineyards and the winemaking processes selected over many years of activity, focusing on the location and the cultivation capacities of the single vines.

Marchesi di Barolo’s mission still consists in knowing how to marry “tradition and evolution” by combining ancient winemaking techniques with the ability to present Barolo in a contemporary way, according to the most authentic and sought after trends in “Made in Italy” food and winemaking.

Cannubi is a long, gently sloping hill right in the middle of the Barolo area. The higher hills which surround it protect it from storms and high winds. Its soil is a mix of different clays and fine sands filled with limestone. The soil type and microclimate give Cannubi an exceptional completeness and balance, harmony between structure and aromas, and re-markably elegant tannins, making this Barolo not just a pleasure to drink but also a wine with a long lifespan.

Sarmassa has a location facing southeast, on a steep hillside. The soil is mainly composed of clay and limestone, is very compact and gives the wine a structure rich in dietary minerals and mineral nutri-ents. The stones in the soil, together with the clay, keep Nebbiolo vines from growing much foliage and make them highly susceptible to changes in the weather, favouring the ideal grape maturation. Sar-massa is the last cru to mature; this wine is well-struc-tured, bright coloured, tannic and long-lived.

Peiragal is an old word in dialect that refers to hills with highly compact soil composed of clay and lime-stone. This type of soil absorbs a limited amount of precipitation, so that the roots go down very deep looking for moisture which rises by capillarity from the lower layers. As a result, the vine produces loose-packed bunches and, therefore, quite a structured wine with moderate acidity and balanced alcohol content.

The grapes come exclusively from the prestigious hill, Coste di Rose, entirely facing east, located in the municipality of Barolo. The favourable slope and the moderately calcareous soil type particularly rich in quartz sand and limestone lying on compact layers of sandstone, favour the production of imme-diately pleasing, balanced, harmonious wines with intense aromas that bring to mind hints of wild mint.

Serragrilli is a gently sloping hill in the municipality of Neive entirely facing southwest, where the Nebbiolo grape bunches are under the sun until late evening. The soil structure and com-position is uniform; it is compact and there is a homogeneous correlation between mineral nutrients and ma-cronutrients. This area is known for its strong viticulture vocation and pro-duces a quite pleasing wine, assertive and full-bodied on the palate, and yet harmonious and balanced with docile tannins that are never overwhelming.

Nebbiolo is a varietal that faithfully transfers the characteristics of the soil to its fruit: from calcareous clay hills, it extracts the mineral salts and trace elements enriching its structure while it picks up fruity and fragrant scents from lands abounding in sand and silt. The fusion of such characteristics pro-duces a wine of great completeness and harmony with an extensive expression of the bouquet. It is deep ruby red in colour. The fragrance combines fruity hints of raspberry with the more ethere-al and spicy accents of violet and vanil-la. This is a full-flavoured, harmonious wine with sweet elegant tannins.

Peiragal is an old word in dialect that refers to hills with highly compact soil composed of clay and limestone. This type of soil absorbs a limited amount of precipitation, so that the roots go down very deep looking for moisture which rises by capillarity from the lower layers. As a result, the vine produces loose-packed bunches and, therefore, quite a structured wine with moderate acidity and balanced alcohol content.

For the Dolcetto d’Alba vine to express itself to the fullest, vineyards located on steep slopes with mainly loose lime-stone soils rich in quartz sand, alternat-ing with layers of grey sandstone are preferable. Indeed this soil composition gives the vine a modest vigour and en-hances the typical characteristics of Dol-cetto d’Alba grapes, which, by nature, produce a fresh, fragrant and fruity wine, with a sharp morello cherry scent.

Vineyards particularly rich in clay and limestone, which look like “White Lands”, make the grapes and wine solidly built and full of tannins, which ensure a long lifespan. To enhance this richness, the Barolo Riserva matures in large barrels-the very same ones that were chosen in the past since they are ideal for this slow development of the wine. Barolo Riserva concludes its ageing in the bottle, allowing the vari-ous components to blend perfectly, giving us a wine that fully expresses itself with good ageing prospects.

    TRADIZIONE

The grapes come from vineyards with an eastern and south-eastern location, on hills with a steep slope. The soil is mainly composed of clay and limestone with lots of quartz sand, which gives the wine a good structure, many mineral nutrients, a vigorous but balanced personality and a remarkable bouquet. The grapes, picked by hand, reach the cellar en-tirely intact, where they are destemmed and softly pressed and put in temperature-controlled tanks to ferment. Once fined in small oak barrels for at least 18 months, the wine is then blended in traditional large Slavonian oak barrels.

The grapes come from the municipalities of Bar-baresco and Neive. The vineyards, located on hills with a steep slope, have calcareous, medium-bod-ied clay soil, which gives the wine a good structure, many mineral nutrients and an elegant bouquet. The grapes, picked by hand, reach the cellar entirely intact, where they are destemmed and softly pressed and put in temperature-controlled tanks to ferment. The wine fines in traditional Slavonian oak barrels for at least a year.

    MICHET Nebbiolo d’Alba

    Denominazione di Origine Controllata

Nebbiolo is a very eclectic grape variety. It extracts many mineral nutrients from the hills that have limestone and clay soil that enrich its structure, while it gets fragrant and fruity aromas from soils rich in limestone and fine quartz sand. By including Michet grapes, characterised by small loose-packed bunches, the wine has more colour and extract. It is a ruby-red colour, tending towards gar-net. The bouquet combines fruity hints of raspberry with spicy and etheric aromas of violet and va-nilla. Its flavour is rich with docile tannins that are never overwhelming, with a delicate oaky note.

    RUVEI Barbera d’Alba

    Denominazione di Origine Controllata

The Barbera d’Alba is the most traditional wine from Piedmont. The grapes come from vineyards with calcareous-clay soil. This ensures the wine an excellent structure and bestows it with a vigorous but balanced personality. The grapes, picked by hand, are quickly taken to the cellar, destemmed and softly pressed. Its aroma is fresh, with fruity notes that are reminiscent of blackberry, red fruit jam and spicy notes of vanilla and toasted hazelnuts. Its taste is full and pervasive, with a touch of tartness that gives the wine freshness and fragrance. The oaky note is sharp but well blended with the other aromas.

The grapes come from the vineyards located on the Langhe hills surrounding Alba. The vineyards grow on steep hills with loose limestone soil and rich in quartz sand alternating with compact layers of grey sandstone. This peculiar soil composition and the temperature-controlled fermentation enhance the typical characteristics of the Dolcetto d’Alba grape variety, which by nature yields a fresh, fragrant and fruity wine, with a sharp, immediately recognisable morello cherry scent.

Bottle ml. 750 Half Bottle ml. 375

We have cultivated this variety in the heart of its native land: an area with an extraordinary wine growing voca-tion thanks to the presence of a marly, clayey soil covered with a thick layer of fine sand and silt. This well balanced composition confers great equilibrium and harmony. An exuberant and robust character marries the freshness and fra-grance typical of young scented wines. Its fresh fragrance is endowed with fruity notes recalling blackberries and red berry preserves together with the spicy hints of vanilla and roasted hazel-nut. The taste is full and all-enveloping.

The grapes come from hills composed of medium-bodied limestone soils, where fine soil separates such as silt, very fine clay and quartz sand mixed with sandstone prevail and give the wine a straightforward bouquet. It is a pale ruby-red colour, with hints of orange, which is typical of this grape variety. Its bouquet is fresh, lively, with well-defined notes of white pepper, gen-tian and delicate spices. Its flavour is dry, agreeably acidulous, lively, slightly tannic, with a characteristic almond aftertaste.

“Bric Amel”, two words that express the spirit of this wine: Bricco, meaning hilltop, is where a calcareous soil of quartz-rich sand and fine clay guarantee a complex structure and an immediate expression of the bouquet; Amel, mean-ing honey, symbolizes the fullness and complexity that the grapes ripened on these lands manage to express in a wide variety of scents, just as wild flowers blend their properties in a product that is unique and potent, yet somehow delicate: in the local dialect of the Langhe, honey is called “Amel”. The flavour is full, fresh, tasty, fragrant and delicately mineral.

The color is ruby red, brilliant, with a slight mauve reflection. The scent opens with fruity hints of raspberry, currant, while in the background a floral hint of rose blossoms. Its mousse is fine and lingering, its colour is cherry red and the bouquet is intensely aromatic with a subtle note of musk and geranium. It is quite pleasantly sweet.

    BAROLO CHINATO Vino aromatizzato

Moscato d’Asti grapes come from vineyards in the Langhe with an optimal slope. The vines are grown on hills with a steep slope, with loose, mainly limestone soil, rich in quartz sand and very fine silt. This soil composition enhances the typical aromatic characteristics of the Moscato grape variety. The must is fermented for a long period in pressure tanks: the mousse is therefore lingering, the perlage fine and abun-dant. The bouquet is aromatic, intense, with hints of orange flowers. The sweet taste is reminiscent of its delicate per-fumes.

This unique aperitif/digestive liqueur with rare pleasant characteristics is made from Barolo DOCG wine that has been aged at least four years, and macerated calisaya bark, clove and other spices belonging to an ancient tradition. A dosage is added, making it perfectly harmonious. Garnet red with orangey rim, its intensely aromatic fragrance recalls the oriental spices with which it is produced. On the palate it is sweet, warm and full with a slightly bitter finish from the gentian.

  • TRADITION WITH A VIEW TO THE FUTURE

Behind every renowned wine producer there is a long family history which speaks of a passion for wine that has been passed down from one generation to another and has been translated into love for every precious wine-making moment, from tending the vineyard to tasting the finished product.Just so, the history of Cascina Bruciata is intertwined with that of different families, including ours, which purchased it in 2016. We took on this farming establishment in addition to Marchesi di Barolo, the other property which our family owns.Rio Sordo is one of the historic Crus of Barbaresco, a town located near Cuneo about 300 metres above sea level. This area has always produced elegant, sophisticated and full-bodied wines.Rio Sordo owes its name to the watercourse that flows underground, a silent presence capable of maintaining a constant water supply in summer and winter and of regulating the relationship between soil and vines.

  • 23

The Rio Sordo Mention corresponds to the most classic part of the area of origin of the Barbaresco D.O.C.G. The ridge, arranged in a south-north direction, is influenced by the Tanaro and the whole area, at an altitude of between 200 and 300 meters, is located between highest hills, which protect it ensuring an exceptional microclimate, perfect to ripen Nebbiolo grapes.

A territory of considerable oenological interest, such as this one, allows you to start out advantageous, but the care of the vineyards and attention throughout the winemaking process are essential to make these wonderful wines from these grapes.structured and refined, now known throughout the world. There is, in fact, an exchange of mutual attention between the nature of the soil and the vines and the way they are raised: with the vintage 2015 Cascina Bruciata has obtained the Organic Certification, which ensures that the vineyards are conducted in full respect of their balance.Cascina Bruciata represents what the Abbona family has always pursued: tradition with an eye to to the future, love for their roots, respect for the places where we live and work and, finally, the pleasure of the sharing products with a world of enthusiasts.
