2nd Generation -Thomas sold the business to his

younger brother Charles for £250 and happily retired!

The couple’s eldest son Thomas bought 30 Leopold Street.

He built a workshop in the rear yard and then, his very own

business was born.

The family business moved toAshby Square, where they had

4th Generation – At just 16 years old,

Ray Bentley left school and was drafted into the Navy. Two years later he left and

joined the family business.

Large scale online expansion begins, with the launch

We kept growing and needed more space, so we bought a brand new warehouse and an office space.

A multi million pound office investment is made due to rapid expansion. Factories and offices

are open in Sri Lanka, China and Hong Kong.

BuyDirect4U hit a huge milestone in terms of sales.

We turned over our first million pounds!

Half a million is spent investing in state-of-the-art brushware

manufacturing, increasing production rates by one third.

Charles Bentley & Son Ltd purchased new 202,000 ft warehouse to help improve

product variety and stock levels.

FSC (Forest Stewardship Council)FSC runs a global forest certification system with two key components: Forest

Management and Chain of Custody certification. This system allows consumers

to identify, purchase and use wood, paper and other forest products produced

from well-managed forests and/or recycled materials.

SEDEX (Supplier Ethical Data Exchange)Charles Bentley & Son Ltd is a member of Sedex (www.sedexglobal.com). Sedex is

home to one of the world’s largest collaborative platform for buyers, suppliers and

auditors. The platform is used by more than 38,000 members in over 150 countries

to manage performance around labour rights, health & safety, the environment and

business ethics. Sedex is not a standard setting body and doesn’t approve or certify

our policies and standards. Instead, being a member of Sedex is a sign of Charles

Bentley’s willingness to share information and to use this information to help manage

and improve ethical standard within the supply chain.

CHSA (Cleaning & Hygiene Suppliers Associations)The CHSA has driven up standards, making it possible for buyers of cleaning products

to be sure when they buy Accredited products that what’s on the box is in the box.

All members adhere to the code of practice and the Manufacturing Standards

Accreditation Schemes for soft tissue products, plastic refuse sacks and industrial

cotton mops ensure customers get what they pay for.

BSI (British Standard Association)Accreditation means that we have been assessed against internationally recognised

Our social and environmental policy is committed to the local community as we understand that local issues have a global impact. Therefore we work closely with local and global environmental organisations to promote good ethical and environmental practice.

We are committed to working with international and global standards relating to the

purchase of timber. This includes both the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) which

is backed by the WWF and the International Accreditation Forum to establish good

ethical and environmental forest management.

We are committed to reducing our emission from our fleet of vehicles. We only use low

sulphur fuels and wherever possible.

We have changed our power to a green power supplier to reduce our enegery consumption

and greenhouse gases.

We are committed to the minimisation of packaging and work with clients and suppliers

to achieve this.

We are committed to improving waste management systems and recycle 100% of

cardboard and supply this direct to paper mills in the UK. All plastic wherever possible

is recycled by our injection moulders.

We work with the local community and councils as well as environmental groups who

are working with a LA 21 policy. We chair the working group for waste reduction and

recycling with Charnwood Borough Council.

We are committed and part of the local Environmental Business Network and Business

forum so we can pass on good environmental practices to smaller local companies.

We have long term ambitions of becoming a ZERO waste business!
