GETTING STARTED WITH A ROOMMATE

Having a college roommate is a unique experience. Whether you are used to sharing your space or not, we want to

share some tips with you so you can be on track to have a great experience with your roommate!

1. Contact your roommate before you arrive in August.

You will find your roommate information in a letter from the housing office. Contacting your roommate throughout the summer is encouraged in

order to get to know each other prior to the semester. Ask what each other is bringing to college, and if either of you plan on sharing those things

(refrigerator, carpets, TVs, etc).

2. Be honest with each other from the beginning.

Whether you already know each other or not, it is likely you have never lived with each other. It is important that each of you are honest with

what you would appreciate from the other to maintain mutual respect. Some questions to consider asking prior to the semester include: How do

you feel about guests? How late are they welcome to stay? What time do you typically like to go to bed and wake up? How will we split up room

chores (taking out trash, cleaning, etc.)?

3. Respect your roommate’s things.

Get permission before you borrow, use, or take anything that is not yours. On the flip side, be honest with what you are okay sharing and what

you are not.

4. Lock your door when you’re away.

Locking your door is the best prevention to theft! You might feel comfortable leaving your room unlocked while you’re away, but your roommate

might not be. A good rule of thumb is to always keep your door locked when you are both away. Just remember to always bring your keys with

you while you are away.

5. Communicate, communicate, communicate!

Most roommates aren’t going to intentionally get under each other's skin. Most roommate conflicts arise from simply not talking about the issue at

hand. Remember to be respectful when communicating.

6. Be open and flexible.

Your roommate will not be exactly like you. You will likely have different backgrounds, political beliefs, religious beliefs, cultural norms, etc. That

does not prevent you from being great roommates! New ideas and experiences are what college is about!

7. Framing your expectations.

While some roommates do end up being best friends, outcomes often vary. Expecting to be best friends puts a lot of pressure on both roommates and can lead to

potential disappointment. Approach the semester simply expecting to be respectful with one another, and see where the relationship goes from there.

- New students will be assigned a designated move-in time, information will be sent to your EagleMail.

- Your EagleCard is your key card for access to your residence hall and serves several other purposes. If you haven’t received

your Eagle Card, please obtain yours from the Conferencing Office located in the Student Center.

- After obtaining your EagleCard, you may proceed directly to your assigned residence hall to check-in!

- Move in generally takes around an hour. This includes filling out appropriate paperwork, receiving your key, and moving items

into your room. CSC designates students and staff to help haul room items inside for your convenience.

- While CSC Housing and Residence Life discourages early move-ins, we understand that situations do arise that require you to

move in before your scheduled check-in. Please contact the Housing Office at 308-432-6466 or [email protected] in advance to

request early check-in. Summer weekly room charges may apply.
