Course Overview & Objectives The purpose of this course is to teach students of varying levels basic Science. The Alternate Curriculum Science course is to develop an awareness of Earth Science, Life Science, Physical Science and Health. Focus is on the steps of the scientific method: Make an observation or observations. Ask questions about the observations and gather information. Form a hypothesis — a tentative description of what's been observed, and make predictions based on that hypothesis.

Students will read aloud or listen to chapters from the Unique Learning System Science Lessons. Student will use a computer, communication board, or hard copy, involving multiple choice and/or fill-in questions.

Students writing activities vary by students’ ability and range from using a picture to complete fill-in questions or to write a word, sentence, paragraph with visual organizers or modifications as needed.

Objectives for this class vary according to each students needs and IEP goals.

Grading PolicyStudents will be graded using Mastery Learning and Grading. Final grades will be determined based on overall mastery of Learning Targets.Learning Targets vary according to student needs. Assignments are due by Friday at 9:00pm each week.

Grade Description Percent Grade

4 Advanced/ Proficient: Student has demonstrated complete and detailed understanding of the learning target and can apply it.

80-100 A

3 Proficient: Student has a firm grasp of the learning target and have demonstrated understanding of the concepts involved but may not be inconsistent or may have minor misunderstandings and errors.

60-70 B

2 Basic Proficient: Student has demonstrated some conceptual understanding of the learning target but still have some confusion of key ideas or make errors more than occasionally.

40-49 C

1 Limited Proficient: Student has demonstrated little or unclear understanding or have multiple misunderstandings about the learning target.

Expectations for Online Participation & Behavior● Attend class in a private and quiet space.

● Camera capability should ALWAYS be functioning. Consider using a virtual background to protect the privacy of your home.

● Use headsets or earbuds for better audio quality.

● Mute your audio unless you want to speak, this reduces background noise.

● Have good lighting on your desk/table in order to be seen on camera.

● Limit distractions such as movement, pets, background activity.

● Have appropriate dress and appearance (lying on your bed is not acceptable)for the camera.
