Governor’s Corner

Hello fellow Civitans! First, I want to say that I hope everyone had a wonderful

Christmas and I want to wish all of you a wonderful new year. It’s hard to believe, but

we are already three months into our Civitan year.

I know we’ve all had a busy past few months with the holiday season and I am so

proud of all the activities and projects that all the clubs have had going on during this

season. I know that there have been many lives touched by each of your activities.

You should all be proud of what you have accomplished. Without our wonderful Civi-

tan organization and the activities of all of you, those lives would have never been

touched.

Now that the busy holiday season is behind us, we have a very busy remaining nine

months to ensure the success of our organization. As most of you know, one of our

goals for this year is to have a 10% growth in membership. That means we have to

have an overall increase of membership by 90 members. That may seem like a lot, but

if that number is divided up between all of our clubs, each club only has to have an

increase of three members. It’s very important that we get all of our members in-

volved and “Talk Civitan” whenever we can to help others join our wonderful organiza-

tion.

Enjoy golfing? We are putting together an Alabama District North golf team to play

at the yearly Civitan International fundraiser, the Civitan Breakthru Golf Benefit. We

are looking for one or more golfers to be a part of the team this year. The golf tourna-

ment will be in Milwaukee Wisconsin just before the Civitan International convention

takes place. Please contact me if you are interested. Don’t like to golf but want to

help? Please mark your Civitans at the Helm checks (in the note section) to benefit the

golf tournament. Not only will you receive credit towards Civitans at the Helm, but you

will also support the fundraising activities for the team. Our team was the 5th highest

team in donations raised last year with our goal to be the #1 team this year…..and we

can do it with your help. Contact me if you have any questions.

Lastly, I want to remind everyone that the Alabama North District is here to serve

each of you. If there is ever anything that you need, please contact us and let us know

what we can do to help. This may range from fundraising activities to club growth. We

are here for you and we want to do what we can to help support your clubs.

I look forward to serving with all of you this year and helping to grow our organiza-

tion. As always, thank you so much for allowing me the opportunity to serve as your

Governor. Talk Civitan!

First, I want to thank former Governor Paul Emerson, chair of the nominating committee, and the committee members for naming me the candidate for Governor Elect. Following the convention vote on Saturday morning, I was installed at the dinner Saturday evening. Even though my duties officially be-gan October 1st, I have been

busy since my election. Just as Governor Joel assisted Bar-bara during her year as Governor, I am assisting Joel by sharing some of the load with him. Since the August con-vention, I have visited several clubs. Sometimes I was asked to speak, and on many of those visits I installed club officers. As I think about the months ahead, I have reflected on why I joined Civitan. What made the greatest impression on me was being able to help those in need and especially working with my hands. I have helped to build wheel chair ramps and to work with our Special Needs in every aspect whether it be swimming, bowling Special Olympics. I truly enjoy helping others. Now, as I begin new responsibilities, I am aware that this is a three-year commitment. One year as Governor-Elect, one year as Governor, and one year as immediate past Governor. I am counting on the continued dedication to Civitan as so many of you have, we will work together to build up the district, following the plans made for us by the growth and retention committees. I would love to see us build more clubs. Years ago a well-known literacy program was established by Frank Laubach. His motto was, "Each one teach one." I would like to paraphrase his slogan for Civitan and as that "Each one reach one." If we can chal-lenge each club member to add one member, we will ex-ceed our goal. Will you accept the challenge? Fifty Years of Freedom Fifty years ago my father’s Civitan Club in Decatur invited Tony Rea and myself to attend the Harding Citizen-

ship Seminar (now the National Leadership Forum).

Although many things have been poured into my feeble brain since those high school days, I still have distinct

memories of the emotions that week instilled in me! I never forgot the sense of pride in country and apprecia-

tion for the freedoms we have as members of the greatest country in the world.

Your club can make that lasting impact on the mind of a young man or lady in your town. Just plan to send

one, two or more to this year’s NLF to be held at Harding University May 31- June 5, 2020. The cost (~$175) in-

cludes bus transportation, housing and registration fees. A small price to pay to change a life!

The District is also looking for at least one male and one female chaperone. You can rekindle your flame for democracy

again also. Just talk to Randy Harvell or Catherine Muir for details – they went last year.

Holly Pond Christmas Holly Pond Civitan President, Walt Floyd decorated the Christmas tree in

Holly Pond Town Hall. Holly Pond Civitans were responsible for Holly

Pond’s ‘Christmas Cards in the Park’ with greetings from 25 local busi-

nesses and organizations displayed in Governor’s Park.
