2019 WAS YET ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL AND PRODUCTIVE YEAR FOR CAWA LEGISLATION, REGULATION AND LEGAL HIGHLIGHTS l Reviewed hundreds of legislative proposals in the three states we represent to ascertain their relevancy to the auto care industry and members of CAWA. l In coalition with national and state automotive aftermarket associations and companies, developed a plan for pursuing a vehicle safety inspection program in California. l Continued, in California, to oppose a “split property” tax role, as an example of an initiative that would negatively impact the membership and industry. l CAWA was represented on the Bureau of Automotive Repair Advisory Group. l Educated legislators on the value and importance of aftermarket replacement parts. l Joined coalitions with chambers of commerce and other business groups to speak out against unnecessary regulations and legislation that impedes the growth of business. Led a coalition in Nevada to defeat a bill that was an anti-aftermarket proposal which sought to prohibit the use of aftermarket parts, require consumer waivers to use aftermarket parts and shed fear and doubt about the efficacy of aftermarket parts. From legislative advocacy to training to offering member benefits and value, CAWA had a very productive and successful year in 2019. Here are some of the major highlights of the year:

LEGISLATION, REGULATION AND LEGAL HIGHLIGHTS

l Partnered with state administrative agencies to inform and educate consumers on their warranty rights, i.e., that parts and service outside their dealership would not void their warranty.

l Supported an Arizona bill to establish a pilot program for vehicle inspections.

l Awarded Association political action funds to legislators deemed friendly to the auto care industry.

l Commissioned its attorneys in all three states to provide FREE legal consultation to members for a variety of legal issues.

l CAWA was represented on the Auto Care Association’s Government Affairs Committee to assess what was occurring nationally that could impact our members in the states we represent.

l Consulted during the legislative sessions with executives and

lobbyists of other aftermarket associations to assure the industry would speak with one voice in the legislative process.

l Met with governmental regulatory agencies to research members’ issues so that the member could remain anonymous in the discussion regarding the issue.

l Communicated new laws, case law, compliance alerts, regulations and industry news to members to determine their impact on business.

l Alerted the membership on “automotive refrigerants in small cans” and other government reporting requirements.

Provided daily vigilance on behalf of the industry in the state capitols — Sacramento, Carson City, Phoenix and our nation’s capitol Washington D.C. in partnership with our national colleagues at the Auto Care Association and CARE.

Provided members with information regarding new laws affecting their businesses.

l Provided FREE sexual harassment training for employees, required by law, for members through a partnership with CoreMark Insurance Services.

l Held training and informational programs for our members. Examples include: “Automotive Aftermarket eCommerce Secrets – A Comprehensive Approach to Making Your Competitors Irrelevant”; “Understanding the Warehouseman’s Role in the Skilled Trades Supply Chain; “Financing Growth: Get Your Banker to Say Yes”; “The Greatest Threats Facing the Aftermarket Industry” ;”Key Automotive Tends Impacting the North American Aftermarket”; “Our Connected Future” ;”Grow or Die”; “What You Might Expect in Legislation Next Year that Will Impact Your Business” , to name a few. CAWA applied for and received University of the Aftermarket Continuing Education Units for these presentations.

l Supported career technical training in the states we represent.

l Actively provided information and training on new technologies, including telematics, e-Commerce, ADAS and cybersecurity to educate members and others regarding the impact on the industry.

l Promoted an industry specific online job board for companies and individuals through the CAWA Career Center.

Awarded scholarships to deserving students either currently employed or seeking careers in the auto care industry.

Awarded scholarships (the Motorcar Parts of America - Selwyn Joffe Awards) to automotive high school teachers to assure their programs remained vibrant and relevant. Received a major donation for the program from Worldpac.

l Developed and implemented an insurance health trust in the state of Arizona to provide quality and competitive insurance programs to the membership while reducing their premium payments. (which could be replicated in California and Nevada in the future).

l Continued to provide quality and competitive business services including FREE legal consultation, insurance programs, website development services, credit card processing, financial services consultation and business forms, as examples.

l Offered member discounted workers compensation and general liability insurance to the membership.

l Continued to reach out to members of the Young Auto Care Network Group (YANG) to encourage them to participate in Association leadership meetings and training sessions, at no cost. Hosted two YANG Meet-Ups in support of the organization.

l Conducted the most successful scholarship fundraising effort at the annual dinner meeting, exclusively sponsored by Motorcar Parts of America, while receiving a major donation from Worldpac for the Association’s scholarship programs.

l Educated the membership regarding resources available to them if their companies or employees suffered from wild fires and earth quakes.

l Answered many questions from the membership and directed them, as appropriate, to where their issue or questions could be resolved quickly.

l Continuously updated the Association’s website to bring industry news and alerts to the membership. The website was exclusively sponsored by AISIN World Corp of America and Idemitsu Lubricants America Corp.

ENDORSED PROGRAMS AND

SERVICESProvided FREE access to VIP Employee Benefits Services and an electronic human resource library to answer members’ questions regarding human resource-employment issues, personnel policies and practices, etc.

Expanded a very active presence in social media to become a clear voice for the auto care industry out west.

MISCELLANEOUS ACHIEVEMENTS CONTINUED Our success as an automotive aftermarket trade

association comes from an active and contributory leadership made up of the Board of Directors and the Manufacturers Advisory Council. The Association thanks them for their time, effort and commitment to CAWA and the industry we represent. Our general membership, too, gave the Association the capability to make the industry’s voice heard throughout the west, as the industry’s “first line of defense”.

l Received funds from the national Car Care Council to conduct three vehicle check-up events while promoting, to the public, the return of small can refrigerant containers.

l Attended and participated in the Auto Care Association’s leadership days.

l Continued a partnership with the Automotive Aftermarket Charitable Foundation and promoted its mission to the industry.

l Assisted the Auto Care Association in promoting the program entitled: “Your Car. Your Data. Your Choice”.

l Produced the Association’s bi-monthly newsletter, called “Connections”, to keep members and the industry apprised of issues out west that could impact their business. The newsletter was exclusively sponsored by the Automotive Distribution Network.
