YMCA TEXAS YOUTH AND GOVERNMENT 2019 CONFERENCE

To my family, mentors, volunteers, advisors, and fellow Youth & Government enthusiast,

Welcome to the 72nd Texas Youth & Government State Conference! Serving as your Texas Youth Governor this past year has been an unbelievably special experience, as I have been able to represent Texas at the Youth Governor’s Conference, the Conference on National Affairs, and numerous events in my community. As a culmination of my term as Governor, I am beyond thrilled to be serving at this year’s conference and cannot wait for the festivities to begin!

For the past six years, the YMCA has been my home. I first participated in the Y’s Leader’s Club in eighth grade and then served as a YMCA summer camp volunteer for three summers. In the fall of tenth grade, my brother Ashish and I founded the first YMCA Youth & Government club at our high school. Since then, this program, this organization, and this movement have been central to my life. Through Youth & Government, I have come to understand the importance of not only educating citizens about the political process but immersing young people in it early on. There is no substitute for first-hand experience, and programs like YMCA Youth & Government will be critical to increasing national civic involvement in the long run. Thus, whether in judicial, legislative, state affairs forum, media corps, lobbyist program, or governor’s cabinet, we have a unique opportunity to claim our stake in the American democracy.

Let’s take full advantage of it.

At this conference, I guarantee that you will listen both to individuals whose viewpoints are aligned and diametrically opposite to yours. You will meet both individuals whose background is similar and foreign to yours. You will encounter delegates who have more experience than you and those who have never participated in Youth & Government before this year. Though these differences may seem stark, this diversity helps to cultivate a special and enriching state conference experience. Invariably, each individual has a story to tell and wisdom to offer; I hope that both my fellow delegates and I will be able to embrace and partake in this quintessential diversity that constitutes the Texas Youth & Government Program.

In conclusion, I would like to thank my parents, my brother Ashish, and my friends from Glenda Dawson High School for believing in our vision for a Youth & Government club. Furthermore, I would like to send my sincerest gratitude to my first mentor and good friend, Kalon Collins. He was the first person to introduce me to the YMCA and his work ethic and drive inspired my brother and I to work hard and pursue our dreams. Finally, I would like to thank the executive director of my YMCA, Ms. Suzanne Murray, for her advice, open mind and continual efforts to support our thriving Youth & Government program. I hope I’ve made everyone proud.

Delegates, best of luck this weekend and look forward to an exciting conference! Sincerely,

Aayush Davé

These awards recognize former Youth and Government State Directors John Kaempf (’73-’84) a former CEO

of the Ft. Worth YMCA and Bill Theiss (’84-’93) (a former CEO of Waxahachie YMCA). Both of these

gentlemen retired from full-time service at local YMCA’s to give further outstanding service to Texas Youth

and Government. Their servant leadership embodies all that YG teaches and is modeled by recipients of these

awards.
