What is Scouting for Food
How Does Scouting For Food Work?
Scouting for Food is an annual food drive sponsored by the Boy Scouts of America. It is part of our program that emphasizes our slogan “Do a Good Turn Daily”. Since 1988, millions of Scouts, nation wide, have participated in this effort. Annually in Glacier’s Edge council, we consistenly collect over 100,000 pounds of food that benefit over 35 community food pantries
1. Beginning in January, advertise the dates and begin recruiting a work force.2. In February, call your local food pantries and communicate the details and anticipated
amount of food! Many food pantries are not open on Saturday, but will if we ask! 3. Door Hangers will be available at the February Roudtables and will be provided to
those Troops and Packs participating on the scheduled dates.
4. New in 2019 we have added space on the front and back of the door hanger to add local information. Its a good way to put a local touch on the food drive as well as advertise your unit to more people would could potentially become new Scouts!
5. On March 2nd, distribute the door hangers to all the houses in your territory a) Door Hangers should be attached to door handles, NOT in or on mailboxes. b) Based on experience, keep good record of where you left door hangers so you can ensure you return to pickup all food put out!6. On March 9th, beginning at 9am, return to the houses that you placed bags, those wishing
to participate will put their food donation out for you to collect.7. After the first sweep, do a second sweep to ensure that all the food was collected!8. Take the food to your local food pantry. Have your pantry count the items, or weigh the
food.9. Record your service hours and amount of food collected (in lbs or however you counted
the food). This should be done online at the following link:https://goo.gl/forms/rvzVc5sH4ofh3tRw1
BONUS: To broaden your impact even more, consider working with your local grocery store to setup with bins and Scouts in front of the store. Many people will purchase items to
support our cause!
