Campus Comment By: Dylan VonEnde

What do you like most about school?

Landon Nelson (7th grade): I like the fact that we get to change classes because my legs get stiff. And because I get to see different teachers every hour. I would like less homework though. Jordan Davy (8th grade): I like spending time with my fr iends at school because we are always laughing about something. And having fun in class, especially when the teachers tease the boys in class. Elliott Isane (9th grade): Mr. Coltom’s classes are pretty great. I like when Mrs. K helps me with math. I like gym because there is no homework. Brooke VonEnde (10th grade): The par t of school I like the most is being around fr iends all day. I also enjoy how all of the teachers in this school will help you out when they can as long as you ask. Everybody in this school is close and will help others in need or help you find someone who can. Noah Warne (11th grade): What I like most about school is the social atmosphere and seeing all my fr iends. However , learning is probably the most important and in the long run will be the best part about school. Also, I like the small school setting where you know everyone in your class. Morgan Praska (12th grade): The best par t of school is seeing Emma Gust every day. She is the only thing that gets me through the day. When I’m having a bad day, she is always there for me. Mrs. Dostal (Science Teacher): Without question, the thing I like most about school is the people. We have an amazing staff that I look forward to working with every day, and our students here at Badger are the best! They make every day unique and exciting, and I am grateful I get to spend my days here.

Sponsored by our area churches and businesses. All proceeds will go to the Badger Music Department for the awesome job they do!

A huge thank you to Lisa Erickson and Dan Carpenter for the wonderful mentoring they do for the kids.

What is your favorite thing to do when it snows?

Easton Buley (1st grade): I like to make snowmen. We don’t have any rocks, so we break sticks off for the eyes, arms, and legs. I put an orange and black scarf on it and a black hat. It is fun to play in the snow.

Onah Gregerson (2nd grade): My favor ite activity is to go to Bemis Hill because there’s a lot of snow and I can go sledding. It’s not so fun when I fall off the sled though. I like to sit by the campfire.

Elijah Monsrud (3rd grade): Snowcat because it’s fun and I can pull my brother. I can pull my friends and family, and I can pull snow.

Landin Buley (4th grade): I like to go snowboarding and sledding in Bemis Hill. This year I ’m going to Arizona for half of the winter. I’ve never been to Arizona, and I’ve never rode a plane in my life. I can’t wait because I get to ride in a corvette and I get to go in a swimming pool at the house in Arizona.

Keegan VonEnde (5th grade): My favor ite thing to do in the snow is to either go snowcatting or biking. I like racing on my snowcat. I like biking in the winter because I like sliding and it’s funny.

Breydon Foss (6th grade): My favor ite thing to do in the snow is to play outside with my dog. I also will get my snowmobile out and drive my snowmobile around. I like to drive snowmobile around in the woods looking for deer antlers and go for big rides. Also, every year we have a snowmobile race at Minnesota Hill.

At the end of first quarter, students will spend some time updating their Readiness Rubric. GRADE 9: In addition to updating their individual Readiness Rubr ics, 9 th grade students will use the Search Institute’s Developmental assets to help them identify their strengths, and how they can use those assets to overcome obstacles. Students will also review high school requirements for graduation as well as admissions requirements for two and four year colleges. GRADE 10: Motivation matter s. Sophomores will focus on intr insic and extr insic motivation and compulsion (the things we are required to do). Is extrinsic motivation the best way to go? Students will have discussions regarding the benefits and drawbacks of getting paid for good grades. An update of each individual’s Readiness Rubrics is also planned. Workshop: Intellect & Future Careers GRADE 11: Dur ing November , students will explore the different types of financial aid available and learn about the FAFSA4Caster, which calculates financial aid based on need. The Readiness Rubric will also be updated and reviewed. Students will also learn about scholarships, including where to find them and how to fill out applications. Juniors will update their Readiness Rubrics mid-month as well. GRADE 12: Seniors will update their Readiness Rubr ic and will discuss the financial aid options available to help them pay for college. Some options include grants, scholarships, work study, and loans. Seniors will also look at strategies to avoid the dreaded “Senior Slump” and what they can do to stay on track.

Don’t Give Up By: Bryza Rud

On October 8th the Badger School welcomed motivational speaker Terrence Lee Talley, who spoke about perseverance and gave the message: Don’t Give Up. The program was designed to bring a sense of help and hope to each person. Terrence Lee Talley challenged students to not allow others to trip them up or destroy their dreams. He reminded them that they can make a difference in another person’s life, no matter their circumstances. The program ended with Talley explaining the importance of “dad hugs.” Dad hugs simply show that someone cares about you, and you don’t have to do anything for them. They are a way to show someone they matter. Students and staff gave and received Talley’s “dad hugs.” Yam Haus band also performed songs throughout the event, providing positive energy during the program. Freshman student Keyasha Housker said, “I think it really helped the people who were struggling that day. The message really made an impact on me and probably everyone at every school they go to. One of the things I liked the most was that they interacted with the students and staff.” This event became possible when Richard Baker of Student Reach Minnesota contacted the Badger School when the band and keynote speaker were on tour in the area. Superintendent/Principal Kevin Ricke felt this was too good of an opportunity to pass up. The Student Reach Minnesota organization has a solid reputation of providing engaging/energizing assembly programs, which are appropriate for student audiences. The assemblies were made possible for the Badger School through the financial support of Central Boiler/Altoz, Citizens State Bank, and Border State Bank.

Student Opinion By: Lydia Arsaipanit

Do you think violent video games influence players to be violent in real life? Kasen Swenson: When I was young I played video games that were violent, and I ’m far from violent in real life. And this goes for my friends too. I think people are violent because they are either not well or are doing some sort of substance that is making them act that way. Violent games don’t make violent people. Violent people make violent people. Dylan VonEnde: No, I do not. I think violence and video games have nothing to do with each other. Some people are just violent. That is why I think video games don’t influence violence. Hallie Hietala: No, I don’t believe violent video games create violent people. That is like saying playing a boring video game makes people boring to be around. Violence in movies could present the some argument but it just isn’t true. Violent video games are just a simulation. It is a release of emotions rather than an influence for people to lash out. Lydia Arsaipanit: Yes, I think it will influence only the younger players because they are curious to try and the kids are not able to distinguish between games and real life well enough. There is also research that violent games affect the brain and cause aggressive habits.
