    1. Resilient – On Feb. 8, Iona stood at 7-15 overall and in seventh place at 5-6 in the conference. The program ripped off seven wins to end the regular season and finish as the outright regular season champions and three more to win an unprecedented fourth-straight MAAC Championship.

    2. Iron Men – With two departures prior to the start of the 2018-19 season, a sit-out transfer and two season-ending injuries, the Gaels enter the tournament suiting up eight scholarship players. The "Great Eight" have won their last six games together including three in four days at the MAAC Championship. Senior Rickey McGill played a season-low 28 minutes in the MAAC final against Monmouth due to well-documented foul trouble. Prior to that, his season-low minutes played was 34 from the Gaels' loss at Ohio in November. McGill had played 349 of the Gaels' previous 360 minutes in the team's nine wins entering the championship final. The Gaels lost burgeoning junior Niksa Nikolic to an ankle-injury four-games into its current winning streak.

    3. Agile – Tim Cluess' Gaels rebounded from a seven-game losing streak during the non-conference portion of the schedule (the longest losing streak in Cluess' 30+ year career as a head coach) and a four-game slide during MAAC play by somewhat reinventing themselves. In the previous eight seasons, the Gaels successes were predicated by an up-tempo, high-energy pace with the offense reaching a scoring total in the high-70s and 80s. While the team is still most comfortable in those situations, Iona developed its ability to win in a grind-it-out effort against teams in the MAAC that performed at a slower pace. The Gaels have shown ability to succeed in both situations.

    4. Winners – Iona's fourth straight win at the MAAC Championship is the longest active conference tournament in NCAA Division I. (Villanova, New Mexico State and North Carolina Central each have three). Only Gonzaga and New Mexico State have had more conference tournament wins than Iona in the last eight seasons. Cluess has mentored Iona to postseason appearances in all nine years in New Rochelle including six NCAA tournaments, two NIT bids and a CIT championship game appearance in his first season in 2011. Iona was the first No. 1 seed to win the MAAC tournament since 2010 (Siena) and the first to capture a title that was not on its home floor since 2005 (Niagara).

    5. New York Groove – Earning the MAAC's automatic bid this season allows the Gaels to become the first New York Metropolitan Area program in 25 years to appear in four straight NCAA tournaments (Seton Hall, 1991-94). With its at-large selection this season Seton Hall matched the four-in-a-row. There are 23 Division teams that represent the NY Metro area, no team has won more games or appeared in more postseason events than Iona during Tim Cluess' nine-year tenure.

    6. MAAC Dynasty – Tim Cluess has earned five MAAC tournament championships in his nine seasons in New Rochelle. Other than Iona with 12 conference titles, no other MAAC team has more than five total. Manhattan has earned five in 38 seasons in the MAAC and is matched by Siena's five since joining the league in 1989. La Salle, which left the league in 1992 earned four and Fairfield and Saint Peter's have captured three since the league was founded in 1981-1982. Iona has appeared in seven straight and eight of the last nine MAAC championship games.

    7. Iona Pros – Twenty-six former Gaels are currently active in the professional basketball ranks across the world. Twenty-five of the 26 appeared in the NCAA tournament as members of the Maroon & Gold. Most notably, Scott Machado '12 appeared in six regular season games with the Houston Rockets and five playoff games with the Golden State Warriors in the 2012-13 campaign. Machado currently stars for the South Bay Lakers, the G-League affiliate of the Los Angeles Lakers.

    8. Carolina Connection – As head coach at St. Mary's High School from 1991-2005, Tim Cluess coached several student-athletes who went on to play NCAA Division I basketball. One such player was 2009 North Carolina graduate Danny Green, who continues to play professionally with the Toronto Raptors.

    9. Hey Rickey You're So Fine – Senior Rickey McGill became the first student-athlete in the history of the MAAC to win four MAAC tournament championships. McGill was the tournament's MVP and was both preseason and postseason All-MAAC First Team. Only he and Quinnipiac's Cameron Young were honored on the coaches' first team squads both before and after the season.

    10. W-W-E.J.-D – Junior E.J. Crawford joined a less exclusive, but seeming as impressive club as his running mate McGill becoming the 15th player to win three MAAC Championships. The list includes a handful of Gaels, including teammate McGill, former teammate Deyshonee Much and former Gael greats Phil Grant '01 and Nakeia Miller.

    11. O-M-AGEE – Junior transfer Tajuan Agee was one of the top newcomers in the conference in 2018-19 and was named to the All-MAAC Second Team. Only two student-athletes in their first year in the MAAC this season were named to an all-league squad. Agee led the MAAC in rebounding, becoming the first Iona player under Tim Cluess to do so. On three occasions a Gael performer finished second (Mike Glover 2010-11, 2011-12 and David Laury 2012-13, 2014-15)
