HISTORY + GROWTH OF EV’S

Clients, Friends, and Colleagues,

We are about to enter the most exciting and transformative decade for electricity since Edison invented the light bulb. For the first time ever, we are able to use home solar panels to not only keep our lights on, but also to power our entire lifestyle. We can switch from oil and gas to high efficiency heat pumps and we can trade in our gas guzzlers for electric vehicles. With renewable technology today, we are truly able to electrify our lives.

When it comes to electric vehicles, there are many amazing options available today. Nearly every major car manufacturer has an electric vehicle option or at least a plug-in hybrid option.

In the past 13 years, the electric vehicle sector has seen exponential growth. In 2012 EmPower Solar hosted a screening of “Who Killed the Electric Car” and while it was a popular event, it seemed that all 7 EV owners on Long Island were present.

Fast forward to 2019, and about one in eight of our new clients either have an EV or plan to purchase an EV in the near future.

As we transition from gasoline powered vehicles to electric powered vehicles, it is important to keep in mind that unless you generate your own electricity with solar, you are still relying on fossil fuels to power your vehicle.

This guide will answer the most frequently asked questions when it comes to EV’sand solar, but it will also serve as a resource to help you size your solar system appropriately depending on your driving habits and the type of electric vehicle you choose for your family.

Sincerely,

David G. Schieren CEO, EmPower Solar EV Owner Since 2011

Plug-in Hybrid / PHEVs

are powered by an internal

combustion engine that can run

on conventional or alternative fuel

and an electric motor that uses

energy stored in a battery. The

vehicle can be plugged into an

electric power source to charge

the battery. Some can travel more

than 70 miles on electricity alone,

and all can operate solely on

gasoline (similar to a conventional

hybrid).

Battery Electric Vehicle / BEVs

use a battery to store the electric

energy that powers the motor. EV

batteries are charged by plugging

the vehicle into an electric power

source. These vehicles are 100%

electric and contain no fuel tank.

To produce 3,000 kWh per year, a homeowner on Long Island would need between a 2kW and 4kW solar system depending on the home’s pitch, orientation, shade, etc.

Individual solar panels range in kW from 290 watts per panel to 400 watts per panel.

So, if we look at Joe Smith who drives 8,000 Miles a year in his Nissan Leaf and has great solar access on his southern facing home, he would need four 400 watt panels to produce the 2,133 kWh necessary to completely power his EV for the year. So we would design Joe a 1.6 kW system for his EV. This would be in addition to whatever his home’s annual electricity needs are. In Joe’s case, it’s just him and his partner living in a modest ranch, so they use about 8,500 kWh per year. A 6.2kW solar system would take care of the home's energy needs. So Joe’s total system size would be 7.8kW. If we took the same house but was mostly in the shade, he could require a 10kW system to produce the same amount of energy.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONSHow do electric vehicles work? The battery from electric cars use electricity stored in a battery pack to power the electric motor. Since the battery electric cars don’t run on gasoline or diesel, and are run entirely on electricity, they are also called “all-electric” vehicles. While electric vehicles don’t produce tailpipe pollution, the electricity they use could be produced from a coal or gas powered power plant.

UCSUSA research shows that battery electric cars charged off the dirtiest gas dominated grid still produces less pollution than their gasoline-powered counterparts. BEVs powered by renewable energy sources are virtually emission free. To find out how you can pair your electric vehicle to a solar panel system and be completely energy independent, call EmPower Solar at 516-837-3459.

How long does it take to charge an electric vehicle? This can vary based on car and location but Level 1 charging typically adds about 4 miles per hour and takes about 8-20 hours to fully charge.

Level 2 charging, which is most common at home adds about 20 –30 miles per hour and most full EV cars take 6-8 hours to fully charge. Most PHEV’s fully charge in less than an hour.

DC fast charge adds about 40 / 50 + miles per hour depending on the kW power of the charge unit and can charge 80% of your electric car battery in as low as 30 minutes.

How much does a home charging system cost? An electric car charging station starts around $499. Installation costs vary from $300 to $1,000 depending on the level of charger and electrical upgrades required. ClipperCreek, Leviton, Bosch, ChargePoint, and eMotoWerks are a few brands of household chargers. Delta and Siemens also offer home charging stations.

How much does it cost to charge an electric car? Electricity costs 21 cents/kWh at your home if you live on Long Island or New York City. If you have solar panels, you could pay as low as 8 cents/kWh taking into account the levelized cost of energy. Charging at a public station could cost up to twice as much as home with all-in rates of up to 50 cents/kWh or more if you take into account hourly rates / charge fees at some stations.

EmPower Solar | Long Island Electric Vehicle Resources Guide | 2019

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS How many solar panels do I need if I want to charge my EV with solar energy? This depends on three things; the range of your EV’s battery, the capacity of your EV’s battery, and your home’s viability for solar panels. A typical homeowner driving 12,000 miles a year will need about 3,500 kWh a year to power their vehicle—so they would need a 2-5kW rooftop solar system depending on how much sun their house gets.

How much does it cost to charge an electric vehicle? The average cost of electricity for Long Island and New York City is $0.21 per kWh. Depending on the kWh of the electric vehicle battery, the cost of one time full battery charge for an electric vehicle can range from around $8.40 to $21 if you charge at home, with additional costs if you charge at a public charging station.

For example, a Nissan Leaf, with its 40kWh battery will cost $8.40 per full one-time charge, and will get you 150 miles while a Mitsubishi Outlander, with its 12 kWh battery will cost $2.52 for a full one-time charge but will only go 28 miles on electric before switching to gasoline.

What are the incentives available for electric vehicles? There are state and federal rebates available to purchase an electric car. The federal tax credit for $2500 to $7500 per new EV purchased for use in U.S lowers the up-front costs of electric vehicles.

In NY, Gov. Cuomo’s Charge NY initiative is offering a Drive Clean Rebate of up to $2,000 for new car purchases or leases.

E-ZPass offers a special 10% discount to Hybrid vehicles getting at least 45 to the gallon and meeting SULEV standards. Visit e-zpassny.com for a list of EV vehicles that are eligible.

How does Workplace Charging work? Workplace charging provides a reliable opportunity for commuters to own and drive an EV without worrying about the hassle of finding available public charging. • Step 1: Employer executes ChargePoint host site rebate

agreement • Step 2: Employer executes Charge to Work NY Employer

Participation Agreement, has low-cost EV charging stations installed at the workplace.

• Step 3: Employees execute Charge to Work NY EmployeeParticipation Agreement, receive vehicle rebates upon purchase/lease of EV

TIPS + TRICKS FOR EV OWNERS

Always start your day with a full charge. Even if you have a trip to a public charger planned, we

recommend using home base as your main charging location. 1 - it’s cheaper (especially if you have

solar) and 2 - it’s more reliable. Even if you will only be home for 30 minutes. In most cases this will

give you 10 to 12 miles of range which could make all the difference in your day.

Don’t get ICED! Sometimes a charging space may not be in use (shows as available or operable on

your phone apps) but could be blocked by a “non” charging EV” or in some cases blocked by gas car.

The EV community calls this spot “Iced” which is short for “internal combustion engine”. Carrying a

Level Two extension cord in your car can help you access the charging station if this happens.

Comfort or distance? In the northeastern climate, your fully charged EV won’t get you as far on

January 15th as it will on May 8th. Make sure to account for the energy necessary to power your

heat in the winter and air conditioning in the summer. Use windows and electric seat heaters

instead to allow more energy to go towards distance.

Lose that water weight! Keeping things like cases of water, beach equipment, coolers, etc. can add

unnecessary weight to your car. A lot of planning was put into making the vehicle light and efficient,

so be careful not to weigh it down and bring down your mileage.

Avoid range anxiety - pre-plan! Always know where the EVSEs (chargers) are on the road and how

long charging will take to get where you’re going. Fully charging fully can take up to 10 hours, even

with a level 2 charger. As level 3’s become more popular with over 300kW (Tesla) we’ll be able to

“fuel” up our EV’s just as fast as it takes to fill up with gasoline—under 10 minutes.

Stay Connected! Two phone applications that will help you find charging stations are Plug Share

and ChargePoint. Plug Share is a crowd sourced app where EV drivers will find, add and comment

on the EVSEs (chargers) away from home, Charge Point is a closed network system that manages

charge systems for various companies and businesses. This app will help you determine if the EVSE

(charger) is available and in some cases reserve let you “reserve” the charger for your arrival.

BYOP. While most chargers are the same, you can’t plug a square peg into a circle hole. Tesla is the

only line of EVs that have their own plug. Everything else uses a universal plug. So don’t show up

with your Chevy Bolt at a Tesla Supercharge station, you’ll be out of luck!
