2019 LEADERSHIPA MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT AND DRIVE CHAIR

2019 was a challenging year as many neighbors were directly impacted by the flood which occurred in March. The needs in our community have been extensive and devastating; working to meet these challenges has brought us together and we have seen what is possible with Neighbor Helping Neighbor.

At Columbus Area United Way our leadership worked closely with state and local organizations to help our neighbors affected by the flooding. Columbus Area United Way was one of the first to step forward and help lead the recovery process. We are proud of how our community has supported the recovery efforts as neighbors work together to rebuild and restore.

Our Board of Directors met with community leaders in 2019 to refine our focus and reshape our health, education and financial stability goals in order to impact the current pressing needs of our community. In the year ahead, we will be aligning our partner agencies to target the attainment of these mission critical goals. We recognize that attainment of these goals would not be possible without the caring power and support of our donors and volunteers. In 2019, when you contributed to Columbus Area United Way you helped your neighbor, your business, your industry, your community to strive for a better life. We look forward to serving the Columbus community in 2020 and continue to stand for “Neighbor Helping Neighbor”.

The 2019 campaign raised $839,700 to support programs that work to improve the education, health and financial stability of our community. Dennis Hirschbrunner served as the Campaign Drive Chairman and lead the campaign team through the process. The campaign team consisted of 25 Division Chairmen and 220 volunteers. Together they contacted 457 businesses and their employees to share information on the impact the United Way has on our community. Over 258 of those companies participated in this year’s campaign with 89 of those businesses increasing their giving. Through direct mail, 329 retired citizens were contacted and 158 generously donated to the campaign.

We owe a great deal of thanks to our Pacesetter companies who raised an amazing 67% of the goal. They are: • BD Medical• Behlen Mfg. Co.• CAMACO• Cargill• Columbus Community Hospital• Columbus Public Schools• First National Bank• FLEXcon• Nebraska Public Power District• Pillen Family Farms/DNA Genetics• Pinnacle Bank• Valmont• Vishay

We would also like to recognize our four new Pacesetter Companies for 2019: • Columbus Bank and Trust Company• Gene Steffy Ford• Loup Public Power• Nu Star Energy.

The Columbus Area United Way is lucky to have so many dedicated volunteers who work so hard to make our campaign a success. We know we could not do this without you and know that you are appreciated!

CAMPAIGN 2019The above presentation is a summary of the sources and use of funds and is not to be considered as part of the audited financial statements. The 2018 audit and the Form 990 will be available in the office of the United Way or its website.

United Way.

Did you know:

ENDOWMENTThe Columbus Area United Way Endowment was established after receiving a bequest from Gus Meyer in 1992, and an additional gift from Marie Froemel in 1995.

Gifts to the endowment are invested and produce earnings. Annually, four percent of net assets are used for grants through the Community Impact Grant Program. Each Community Impact Grant recipient is required to fit under one of the United Way pillars of Education, Health, Financial Stability, and Community Needs. These funded programs are all part of the United Way’s effort to have a positive coordinated impact in the Columbus community.

Today more than 1 million dollars in Impact Grants have been given to community programs. We would like to thank the committee of Rich Aerni, Dick Casey, Terry Millard, and Bob White for their dedicated leadership with the Columbus Area United Way Endowment.

As leader of the United Way, Pat not only worked to raise millions of dollars to help those in need, she also brought in many new programs and partnerships to meet the mission and vision of the organization. Her service with the United Way has made the Columbus community a better place for everyone who calls it home.
