A note from the president September 2019
Dear Neighbors, Happy Birthday to us! Yes, it’s the 30th anniversary of the founding of Neighbors Of Pinehurst! We
hope you will join us for the Member Appreciation Dinner at Pinewild Club and to celebrate 30 years of friendship. September 15... put it on your calendar and sign up today. We are limited to 140 members, so respond quickly. Hope to see you there.
Friendships are the foundation of Neighbors and our last two events have sold out ahead of the deadline. Both Dining Out and the Wine Event in August turned out to be very popular.
Wow, it’s difficult to believe that summer is over and fall is on the horizon! I’m ready to get out my pumpkins (glass, of course) and decorate for fall. This morning I saw a sign that said, "And just like
that, 1969 was 50 years ago". This is so true! Time is going fast.
Regards,
Neighbors 2019 President [email protected]
Important notice: The next board meeting will be held at 4:15 p.m. September 4th at the Keegan residence, 27 Glasgow. RSVP to Pat Keegan, [email protected], 847-612-0504.

Our August Dining Out event was lots of fun. Many thanks to the sixty neighbors who joined us for a delicious dinner at Southern Prime.
Our next Dining Out event is planned for Sunday, November 10th at the Historic Pine Crest Inn. They have reserved the main dining room for our special Neighbors of Pinehurst event. We have an exciting menu
planned: salad, homemade biscuits, five main entrees choices and yummy peach cobbler for dessert. The Pine Crest has started to offer wines from Albemarle, North Carolina as their house wines. They will be offered that night for $6.50 at the private cash bar.
The Pine Crest Inn can serve a maximum of 70 people in this area, so be sure to get your reservations in early for a fun evening of socializing and dining with your neighbors.
Please see the flyer for all the details.

Mexican Train is a game played with number dominoes. The object of the game is for a player to play all the dominoes from his or her hand onto one or more chains, or "trains", emanating from a central hub or "station". players. If you are interested in joining this group please contact Connie Heishman at [email protected] and let her know what days and times work best for you.

You can never get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me. C.S. Lewis
If you are looking for a good summer read (beach read!) look no further than The Bookshop at Water’s End or Driftwood Summer by our Neighbors guest author Patti Callahan Henry. I read both books and recommend them for your book clubs. Perhaps you could read one them before the luncheon - our author will be impressed if she sees that we have read one
of her books! Patti Callahan Henry is our author for the 2019 NOP Book Club Luncheon that will
be held on October 24th! Patti has written 14 novels and is a New York Times Best Selling Author. Her current novel Becoming Mrs. Lewis is a tale of unlikely friendship turned into a true love between Joy Davidson and C.S. Lewis. Patti's novel The Favorite Daughter was
released June 4th 2019. Patti resides in both Mountain Brook, Alabama and Bluffton, South Carolina with her husband and three children.
Our book Club Luncheon is next month (October 24th) and reservations are coming in. Spread the information to friends and other bookies. Remember, this event is open to the public – everyone is welcome! Please print the luncheon flyer, check off your meal
preference, make out your check to NOP and follow the directions in the flyer.
I hope you’ll join us to hear this New York Times bestselling author!
Please donate any books you are finished reading to Dolores Flashman. Many of the book
clubs are reading the same books and this is a good way to share. Dolores will circulate a list of books available to book club members and if you would lie to borrow a book, contact her.
The books are left on the bench on the front porch at 37 Glasgow drive for pick-up. If you have any questions contact Dolores at 255-0554 or dflashman11@gmail.
If you are a member of Neighbors and interested in joining one of our book clubs, please contact me, at [email protected].

Bridge News
Ladies Marathon Bridge – September
Attention All Bridge Players!!! We have new members, some of whom are bridge players of all
levels. There are about 75 players, men and women, currently playing bridge in NOP groups and marathons. I know there are bridge players out there who are not yet in a group or marathon. I know there are couples groups who play that are not currently supported by NOP. Send me your membership
list to see if you qualify for support. I’d even be interested in starting a Men’s Marathon . . . Act 2 has one and so does Pinehurst Country Club.
Grandslammers – September is upon us, already. If you want to play in a marathon this fall you
need to sign up now!
Grandslammer LXIII is almost complete and all scores must be in by September 30th. Grandslammer LXIV won’t finish until October. I have six teams signed up for Grandslammer LXV, so those of you who have finished or are interested in starting a marathon in the fall need to sign up now! What about some of you new members? Find a partner and sign up. The next marathon will be Chicago. As soon as we
have eight teams ready to play, we will begin the next marathon.
The marathons are grouped by the player’s preference – Chicago or Rubber bridge scoring. As soon as
eight teams, in either group, are signed up, play will begin. Karen Fogle is trying to organize a group that will play another Rubber Bridge marathon. If you like to join please let Karen and I know. We will start it as soon as we have 8 teams that want to play rubber bridge.
This is a continuous process. So, sign up now by calling Phyllis Clark at 215-8730 or emailing her at [email protected]. Send your check/s for $10/lady made payable to Neighbors of Pinehurst to
Phyllis Clark, 64 Stoneykirk Drive, Pinehurst, NC 28374. The documents are sent out in PDF format and can be read and printed from Adobe Reader, just like the newsletter. For those who do not have the email option, we will continue to use snail mail.
Hostesses, please remember to schedule your games as early as possible giving your opponents several options. Everyone has busy schedules, so set up your game at least a month in advance. Thank
you. Need a Partner? Give Phyllis a call at 215-8730 or email her at [email protected]. She will try to
hook you up with other players who are looking for a partner. Have you considered playing in another marathon with a different partner? Maybe a new member? Another friend? Or, someone who’s looking for a partner?

Couples Marathon
Sign up now if you are interested in playing in the next couples’ marathon. Signups will continue unti l there are eight couples and another marathon will begin. Sign up and join in the fun! It’s a very nice way to spend an evening. Here’s wishing you great cards!
Games are scheduled so that you play with a different couple once a month for seven (7) months. If you enjoy bridge, this is a great way to meet new couples as well as spend an evening with friends. To sign
up, send a check for $15/couple, made payable to Neighbors of Pinehurst, to Lynne Moore,
32 Lasswade Drive, Pinehurst, NC, 28374. Checks may be mailed or dropped in the basket on Lynne’s
porch. If there are any questions, call Lynne at 235-3929 or email her at [email protected].
How Marathon Bridge Works – Each Marathon consists of seven months of scheduled play with one
additional month allowed for the completion of all rounds. There are no games scheduled in December. Couples or lady partners may schedule play at their convenience during the eight-month period. Signups are on a first-come-first-served basis. When a group fills up, new signups are placed on a waiting list until
there are eight teams to form a new group. This procedure continues throughout the year. So, if you are finishing one marathon and wish to continue or sign up for an additional one send in your check (s). For more information contact either Lynne or Phyllis.

Neighbors Bridge Groups – Neighbors supports various bridge groups by providing cards, score sheets, etc. The requirements for being a “Neighbors” group are simple: 1) All the members must be current
members of Neighbors of Pinehurst. 2) You must use the ladies on the substitute list above as substitutes, whenever possible. To my knowledge there are four duplicate groups that currently qualify for NOP support. There is the 1st Monday Group headed by Judith Kelley, the 1st Friday Group (Bridge Babes) headed by Phyllis
Clark, and the 3rd Monday Group which Phyllis also heads up. There is another 3rd Monday Game, which plays at Elliott’s restaurant. There is a 4-table duplicate group, which plays 28 boards. This group is headed by Kathy Samchalk and Joanne Hodges. They start at 9:45 and break for lunch. If there are any other NOP
groups out there please send Phyllis your membership list to see if you qualify. NOP supports groups with cards, travelers, and recapitulation pads.
