NBA Legend Dies By: Clay Farley

On January 26th 2020, Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gihanna Bryant were on a helicopter going to a sports complex when eyewitnesses saw the helicopter flying

really low to the ground. Soon after the helicopter crashed. All 9 passengers on board including Kobe Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter died. Kobe was 41

years old.

Kobe Bryant was an NBA legend he played for the L.A Lakers and helped them win 5 NBA champions and was a big role model for both fans and players. Kobe played with Shaquille O’Neal for some of his career. Right as Kobe entered the

game, NBA legend Michael Jordan was just getting ready to retire, but was chal-lenged every time he played Kobe.

The day of his passing millions of people mourned his loss and remembered him.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Bryant family.

Super Bowl LIV

By Clay Farley

This 100th season of the NFL has been tremendous with last minute game winning drives, amazing new records, and unbelievable plays. It took a lot of hard work for the players to get where they are now the Super Bowl. The Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers played each other in this year’s game.

At the start of the first Chiefs started out slow their first drive then the 49ers got the ball and the drove down the field and the Chiefs defense held them to only a field goal. Next the Chiefs got the ball back and drove it down the 49ers throat and ended up scoring with a Patrick Mahommes rushing touchdown. A few drives later the Chiefs got the ball back and ended up just settling for a field goal. Next the 49ers got the ball and dominated the Chiefs defense ending in a touchdown pass to their full-back Kyle Juszczyk who ended up diving into the endzone to make it 10-10 right be-fore half time.

At the start of the 2nd half the 49ers drove it down the field end ended up settling for a field goal. Next drive Chiefs were driving down the field until Patrick Mahom-mes threw an interception to give the ball back to the 49ers. Then the 49ers drove it down the field and Raheem Mostert had a 2 yd rushing touchdown. Next the Chiefs got the ball back and they drove it down the field and Patrick Mahommes threw an-other interception. After the Chiefs held the 49ers they got the ball and at the end of the drive Patrick Mahommes threw a 6 yard touchdown pass to tight end Travis Kel-cie. Then the Chiefs defense held the 49ers offense again and got the ball and Patrick Mahommes ended up throwing a 4 yard touchdown pass to Damien Willams. Then the Chiefs got the ball back for the third time in a row because of their defense. When the Chiefs got the ball Damien Willams had a 31 yard rushing touchdown. Score 31-20 Chiefs. After that touchdown it sealed the win and the Kansas City Chiefs are now the next Super Bowl champs.

CCAC Winter Season By Norah Evans

CCAC swim team has had an amazing winter season so far. The team’s swimmers win the events; however the team doesn’t have the overall team numbers to win the

meets. The average number of swimmers on a youth swim team (like CCAC) has 100 plus swimmers, but CCAC only has about 50 to 70. With championships approaching the season only has one more swim meet on February 8, 2020. There were also a few problems with Central swimming in general. One swim meet the high school team

had run straight into trouble. When the swimmers and coach walked into the pool for a swim meet, on a Saturday, the chlorine levels were much higher than usual. Be-

cause of this the team delayed their swim meet to take down the chemical levels. Lat-er on in that same meet, the pool had sprung leak causing all the teams swimming in the pool to leave and canceled practice for the next week or so. The crack has been

repaired by the district, and the teams are now practicing again. We are continuing to pursue our goals!

Hitting the Books

Book Reviews by Lucky Laubach

(Disclaimer: My name is not, and has never been, Lucky. It was a funny typo that I’m going

to keep.)

The books I am recommending this time are A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park and

Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson. A Long Walk to Water is such an inspirational book.

The book is about a boy who grew up in Africa, but moved to the U.S when he became

older. He helped make water pumps in different African villages. The story is very well

told. The story of the boy is being told at the same time the story of a young girl. It’s based

on a true story, making it easier to get more and more involved in the book.

Now, I haven’t exactly finished the next book so bear with me. Chains is a story in the perspective

of a slave girl living through the Revolutionary War. It’s filled with old English, which will defi-

nitely improve your vocabulary. This shows a different prospective into the war. I think there will

be a happy ending, but I’m not going to find out for a bit. I will definitely update you on the ending.

I highly recommend these books and maybe Laurie Halse Anderson should be an author you should

check out considering I recommend a lot of her books. Our Library Media Center has copies of

both of these books available for checkout .

The Origins of Valentines Day

By: A.J. Hoag

Have you ever wondered about the historical and eventful holiday known as Valentines Day?

Well, its originated in ancient Rome which was celebrated for the upcoming Spring. It was

originally called Lupercalia and was considered normal until it was deemed unusual from

Christians during the rise of Christianity. This is mostly because of the weird habits involved.

It continued to grow on and eventually developed the ideas of Valentines in the 1500s and

cards were then printed in the 1700s. It is now known as one of the most popular holidays

from around the world.
