With over 35 years industry experience, Francis has spent much of his career working on international projects experiencing a growing movement toward international execution of engineering design. This movement to virtual team execution has seen mixed success; some have delivered exceptional outcomes whilst a large number have experienced significant issues.

Seeing several WA projects face major delivery issues, Francis began a PHD in 2011 to research interpersonal communications in these teams to build a better understanding of the drivers that influence the ways in which team members interact. This research is now complete, with his thesis approaching completion.

Francis was the WA division president in 2015 and is the current chair of the WA CLM branch, he is a Fellow and EngExec of Engineers Australia and holds the position of General Manager Strategy and Innovation with National Energy Resources Australia (NERA).
